    This tool amazed me the first day I walked onto a construction job 45yrs. ago as a young teen. The gentleman who used it would slightly over cut his trim for all of his difficult fitting and high trimwork? Off he’d go with a bundle of trim over his shoulder and never have to use his chop saw again until his next area of work. (This meant always a perfect joint on his most complicated situations and fast at completing it.)
    Not a replacement for a miter saw (Never was this designs intent.) but? Used intelligently....this tool will up your game from detail trim to adjusting finesse work with dimensional soft wood lumber.
    Old school? Forgotten intelligence!

    My first real job exposed me to the uses of these (and where they make sense to bring in to your work). Our main finish carpenter would quickly cut his door, window trim and base slight over sized on a chop saw and thendistribute it to where it needed installed. (Most door legs were within carpet tolerance and fine to install.) The real beauty with these is when he was working up high on scaffolding, and in restricted work areas because no back and forth to the chop saw.....he was fast and precise and maximized "Not needing it." he would joke.
    He would slam through areas and detail just by effective efficiency of motion, tight glue joints snd me being an apprentice woodwork finisher, never realized how spoiled I was until later in my career making all carpenters equal in high end construction.
    "Little putty, little paint? Makes a carpenter what he ain't."
    Fact: Not behind someone who's smart in the use of this chunk of iron. This...AND a chop saw can mean (and many times IS) working smarter.

      I wonder about bringing to the job for slight adjustments to casing legs. Just bring it from room to room as you go so you don't have to walk all the way back outside to the saw.(if the saw is outside or even a few rooms away)

    I use a shooting board, love it and get perfect miters. However, it’s a bummer that I’m only using 20% of the blade on my shooting board. So I end up with 20% dull or having to sharpen the entire plane iron for that 20%. So I had little interest in the miter trimmer as I have a great set up, that was until, I’d found a beat up box but perfectly new unit for $50. Scooped it up and looking at how to use it for my picture frames. So far it’s taking huge cuts, but trial and error I guess.

    Just purchased and used the Rockler Miter Trimmer on my first kitchen counter job for cutting the decorative edge molding. I can say right now Im not real impressed at this point...In order to cut a 45 degree outside miter you have to place the molding into the trimmer with the laminate side against the fence. If you do this it puts the laminate on the exit side of the material and today was a real challenge trying to cut this miter without it chipping off the laminate. If the laminate was able to be place on the entrance side of the blade and not the exit side I think it would work fine however, there is no way to do that with this machine. Am I missing something..??? The counter top I did had clipped corners (45 degree) so each piece had to have a 27.5 degree outside angle. The fence only locks at 45 degrees so that was the first challenge to adjust the fence at 27.5 degrees. Once I did that, it cut thru the trim molding like butter but, it consistently chipped the laminate because it was on the exit side of the blade....Any help..????

      @johndietz1266 Před 2 lety +1

      The solution to that problem would be to put a sacrificial piece of wood behind the trim on the exit side of the cut to eliminate chip out.

    • @jimscott64
      @jimscott64 Před 8 lety +1

      +enrico3web They look really neat, but when you put a frame together you will still won't have perfectly tight fitting miters. There will always be one corner that won't line up right. They are too difficult to set to a perfect 45 degrees. I've had one for years and don't use it at all anymore.

    • @dabprod
      @dabprod Před 3 lety +1

      @@PintoBlades With a precision cutting chopper. I have a Morso for 25 years for a frame shop. Perfect every time. If the first cut s aren't perfect, that last joint is not going to fit and match up. There just isn't any short-cuts to it.

    You SAY that's a perfect 45, and it LOOKS like a perfect 45, but so does mine, the only problem being... it's NOT! Mine must be cutting about 44 or 44.5 degrees, because when I put them together, the tips touch, but the heels do not! What I need to know is "how do I fine adjust my mitre cutter so that it cuts a TRUE 45 degree mitre?"

    • @LuisCasstle
      @LuisCasstle Před 3 lety

      Do a search for calibrating miter trimmer, I came across one and you can definitely do it, by loosening some screws.

    • @wildwood6612
      @wildwood6612 Před 6 lety +3

      Trust me mate if this produces perfect 45° it is not overkill. I have spent dozens of hours trying to calibrate a mitre chop saw, then had to buy a .00 degree accuracy angle reader to get perfect mitres on my chopsaw and it still takes hours, I want this.

    • @dabprod
      @dabprod Před 3 lety

      This thing will NEVER cut perfect miters. It's not a precision cutting machine. The only way I know to get a perfect miter every time is with a picture frame chopper. I have a Morso and there expensive because they are built to do that job. Perfect fit every time. I've had mine for 25 years in my frame shop. Next best thing is a real good miter saw with a good blade and then a 45* miter sander to fine tune the cut.

    • @steveh8724
      @steveh8724 Před 3 lety +2

      It's all about tool setup. Yes with a good chop saw with a good blade, you can get a pretty good finish on the cut. And if you've adjusted it carefully enough and it's rigid enough, then you can assemble a reasonable rectangular frame with good miter joints. But if you need to slightly adjust the length while keeping a fine finish, a *proprely adjusted* miter trimmer can remove very thin slices while maintaining both the accurate 45 degree angle and keeping the cut face glass smooth. The trick is careful adjustment of the stops to get the proper angle and taking only very thin slices to either clean up the face left by the chop saw or to slightly shorten a side so that you get a perfect fit.

    • @LuisCasstle
      @LuisCasstle Před 3 lety +1

      Fine-tuned miter saw? How much time do you want to spend fine-tuning it? If you use it for anything other than miters forget fine-tuning. This is dedicated to that and straight cuts, if you fine-tune this and check it often it will be more accurate and expedite your cutting. I rather bring a piece to the trimmer for shaving than bring it to a table saw or miter saw every little adjustment. Bulk cut oversized and bring to final length at the trimmer.

    this is a great tool but the price stopped me,,,,unless you make alot of picture frames,,your going in the hole buying this,,,plus it can not hand too wide widths,,,,make you a good table saw miter sled and get a good quality 80 or 100 tooth saw blade
