I had been looking at the Accuright Circle Cutter for a little while so Matt's video was most timely. I got a 15% off coupon from an online retailer and scooped up this device. After using it for a while, here are my thoughts:
I found the device mounting system lacking so I attached my Accuright jig to a piece of 1/2" plywood (that helped a ton)
In one sentence, its fine for making rough circle which you will take to the lathe for truing but not for anything else.
Despite the name, the Accuright is not really accurate. Just the way one has to mount the block on the pivot point results in a lot of slop. I can't ever see this device producing a good enough circle off the saw to use for something like a table top. For that you'll get MUCH better results with a router mounted with a trammel.
In using the jig, the hardest thing to do (by far) is to get the the blank lined up so that your pivot hole slides on top of the pivot point. It is very hard to see and takes more than a few tries.
I spent a lot of time tweaking my bandsaw setup (guides, etc.) and the jig itself. I've cut a lot of circles with it.
Based on my use of this tool, I have determined that I can only use it to make square bowl blanks round (sort of) before heading to the lathe. I won't ever use it for circle pieces in furniture.
My Rating: (which costs you nothing and is worth ever penny)
As a lathe aid: 6 out of 10
As a furniture aid: 2 out of 10

Great video - and what seems to be a user friendly jig - but the plywood you were cutting looked kind of jiggly. Does the edge end up nice and 90 degrees to the top?

Seems like you get a pretty rough edge there, I'd guess because the material is not supported around the blade as much as it would be if it were directly on the table. Hopefully sandable, but I imagine that could be a problem for thinner plywood.

This could use a zero clearance support piece!

  • @CharlesDearingScroller

I SO need to get a bandsaw...and of course one of those!

Lotta tearout on the bottom. Might be good to tape the bottom up to help reduce it...

@@HighlandWoodworking I got it today an installed, i replaced those wing not clamps with my own fo much quicker, The magnet was a brilliant idea as you cannot see it but you do feel when it time to make the circle. and that was priceless. Thank you

Looks like the zero clearance is useless with this product and the off-cut is prone to hang up in at least three or four locations as you cut. Expensive here in Australia as well. I think I'll you-tube some more and make a jig...

Frankly it is more complicated than it needs to be. The cut was wobbly and, if you are not careful, will not give you a true cut. I have seen DIY solutions made out of scrap lumber that worked far better. I guess that is one jig I will not be getting.
