  • The grand stage of mixed martial arts has had many fall wielding their individual style... There just is no room for nonsense in such a dangerous world, but Jiri Prochazka uses mixes and underrated one with Muay Thai to great effectiveness. Karate. How did Jiří Procházka secure a 96% KO ratio on such an elite level? Not only making it into the UFC from being a Rizing KickBoxing champion, but also defeating Dominick Reyes, one of the toughest matchups Jon Jones had ever had to face... How did Jiri do it using Karate? Thank you for joining me on this breakdown as we take a closer glance.

@Doppelganger D it’s not about belittling, it’s about understanding that the path to mastery is an unending one. You can be confident in yourself, in your ability. However, as soon as you say ‘I’m good enough’ you have already ceased to understand the true meaning of martial arts.

The head shake when the interviewer proclaims he has mastered karate was a beautiful moment. You could see that the fighter had developed a true appreciation of Eastern philosophy about mastery: that it is sought, but never obtained. Perfection is only an idea, and one cannot hold an idea. One can only appreciate those brief instances that approach perfection, like a haiku describing a moment. Working toward mastery without the desire to have it. The beautiful paradox that allows people to transcend limits will always be what draws me to martial arts.

I love where this one went homeboy. Not that long ago many a young man I met had the idea that "mastery" would come in only two or three years. Or less because they were special. In defense of mastery, whatever that is. My own teacher spent thirtyfive years training before he taught me. He, a third generation from Funakoshi. In my case I began my training in 1975, and earned my black belt in the year 2000, but I'm slow. I know some kids out there are natural born athletes.
So my motto to my students is, "Ten years to Black Belt. A lifetime to Mastery." Quality over quantity every day.

People seem to forget that a black belt is like finishing primary school. It’s just learning to the point where you can actually begin the real training. Just like elementary school prepares us for university. In Kenpo, you’re not a considered a master until 5th degree black belt, and the wait from 4th to 5th degree is four years minimum of training. You can’t even attempt the test before then. High end karate couldn’t that far off. A black belt is only the beginning, true mastery and especially grand-mastery can take a lifetime. The amount of disrespect for old martial arts and their traditions by modern fighters still astounds me.

In his constant pursuit of mastery, he may likely never have his "perfect fight." And yet, his mindset ensures that he will remain at the highest level of the sport for as long as his body permits. Legend in the making.

As a brown belt kyokushin karate practitioner I have to add that, practicing 2 days / week will not earn you a black belt within 5 years, at least not if it's a legit and serious Dojo. When you have brown belt - you gotta put in at least 3 times / week by minimum to show presence, and also have a cv that proves that you have attended different camps, events, etc. Additionally you need to demonstrate perfect techniques so it doesn't matter if you train 2 times / week if you can't master the necessary techniques for a black belt. Lastly you need to have fighting experience because grading to black you will need to take the 30 man - kumite test, and if you fail that test then you won't earn your black belt.
Now this of course only applies to kyokushin karate, I don't know how it works in other styles, I know that they can vary a lot.
