1980 Ferrari 512 BB 'Competizione': Flat-12 Engine Sound + OnBoard at Red Bull Ring!

- During the 2020 Challenge & GT Days, a track day for historic and modern Ferrari GT/Challenge cars and held at the famous Austrian circuit, the Red Bull Ring, I recorded this special Ferrari 512 BB Competizione from 1980. The car is chassis no. 31159 and it's one of the very few 'Competizione' developed by Ferrari’s Customer Assistance department from 1978 for notable Ferrari's private teams and with the aim of competing at the Le Mans 24h race.
The 512 BB Competizione was still very similar to the production car but with the removal of all that wasn't necessary in order to reduce weight (around 1,230 kg). The so called 'Le Mans kit' increased also the max power output (around 460 hp) of the 5.0-litre 180° 12-cylinder engine. The body of chassis 31159 was later modified with the removal of the pop-up headlights, the addition of front and rear spoilers to aid in aerodynamics and fender flares to cover the racing tyres. The car also received larger brakes to keep its additional performance in check.
Hope you like it!

Man the sound on this video is so amazingly good, specially the onboard.
It's no 917.
What a way to have coffee...thanks Bozzy!
I've always loved the 512 . And I love the 80's sports car shape , like My 89 supra sharp angles straight lines 👌. That 512 is same age as me .
I really wish this version had the 512 TR rear taillight package. Then it would be near perfect.
I always think of my MKII MR2 Turbo as being so Ferrari-like. Until I see an actual Ferrari like this 🤣
As always Bozzy kills it with quality and exclusivity
To all the people criticizing the driver: He isn't racing, this an old car. He's just enjoying himself in this most wonderful classic specimen of a car.
Great video. 👍
Yes but only REAL hells&toes to preserve the mechanic... ⁉️It's not a modern car and all drivers and "real gentlemen drivers"... of this area (and before sequential or "automatic" gearboxes...) made hells&toes and it was necessary, not only to make nice downshifts... 😉‼️
@@kikiautorcman787B Whatever man. I appreciate his respect for that old gearbox.
yes ...but the clutch crying😂
If you want to enjoy a car like that you drive it fast. Enough said
@@Dimpet-xw9gg I can't wait for you to drive it. Please film it when you do.
Brother Bozzy, thank you for your amazing efforts, making us listen and watch crisp and clear audio and videos all day everyday, even without Interruptions (ADS), keep it up brother, all the best to you , you're awesome!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
This the best music. Flat 12 at high rev's.
Bozzy you are honoring combustion engines with your library of delightful sounds! The sound from the engine from the cabin, omg, I am in love with the 512BB, the mother of the famous Testarossa.
AMAZING SOUND.LIKE A SYMPHONY.
How I love ferrari❤️❤️❤️
It looks and sounds... just gorgeous.
Glorious flat 12 soundtrack! Awesome content man!
foo
The Bozzman delivers the goods again. Thanks Bro! Have a nice day!
Now that’s what a race car should look and sound like.
Kinda agreed...i mean there is better sounding/looking oldschool race cars.
The Car and the sound of Engine, is Amazing, great💯%!!!
Quel plaisir 😎👍
Grazzie mille 🎩🇮🇹
Beautiful car and thanks for posting wonderful videos,
Love this car, love this video!
What an awesome car it was! Remember it at Le Mans! Bozzy's site is definitely a reference for all atmospheric competition cars of all ages. Awesome sound and points of view. You should create an “Atmospheric Era Museum” for all those who will only know electric cars. Poor them! Even if I recognize that we have to change paradigm. But atmospheric motors sounds added rage in the competition that electric cars will never. Even with the best pilots. Thanks again Mr Bozzy.
What a wonderfull car,in this time in pass, the cars look better than any other time, and the sound was fantastic and very good loud!! Thanks for that nice Video!! Sorry for my bad english best wish Reiner from Germany
Great to see the Ferrari 512BB Competizione on track, I remember seeing them at Le Mans from 1979 onwards.
I don't think Ferrari ever intended this car to race, but they developed them at the behest of privateers, and after some initial lowly results, eventually developed them in to relatively competitive GT entries.
Breathtaking.
What a machine, i love it!
Lovely flat 12 sound.
Thank you.
Brutal sound!
With a car like that, the more you would need to do a Heel and Toe downshift to save the clutch!
And the gearbox, and the transmission... 😉‼️
What???
outstanding!!
This thing is so fucking cool, almost cant handle its awesomeness
If you like cars this channel is a must honestly. So great content
Glorious, absolutely glorious. I said on another video that I want three BBs, I forgot this monster! I want the 365BB, the 512BB, the 512BBi and this! I doubt I'd live in a house, I would be based at the garage and be permanently on the road smiling like a maniac!
That onboard! 😲
Complimenti 19Bozzy92
The Ferrari 512 BB, for me one of the Ferrari less known for the public, and It´s like a "minor" beast, if You let me say that, a car between the classics 208 and 308 and the beast 288 GTO. It´s amazing the power and sound of this Competizione version, the normal version has an incredible 360 CV!
....I'm visibly excited..
What a stance🤘
thats a proper looking ferrari !
Oh my god.. This car is so sexy 🤩 Bozzy, thanks a lot for great content, as usually 😉
What a beauty…
Hi and thanks Bozzy 👍 😎 sweet 👌😊
Wonderfull!
When I retire sometime in the next year, my wife and I are going to become expats and move to Europe. My plan is to acquire a early ‘80’s 911 cab and drive it to vintage races. I’ve been to numerous events here in the states but not since Covid.. ☹️
I absolutely love your videos!
Cheers
Doc
Una bestia!!!
Very cool.............. 👍👍👍
That is absolutely delicious!
In my opinion this sounds better than most of the modern ferraris ! :)
The Seiko rear wing realy is a time machine 🤯
You are a Ferrari nothing else thanks guys from Carlos Portugal
Che bella 😍
I love the pause when it upshifts, especially from 2nd to 3rd, how it pauses for a second then gets even louder and more obnoxious
Now that’s a car.

Vettura spettacolare. Peccato che in scalata manca il "tacco-punta". Grazie per il video.
Always Bozzy!!
Do you have any coverage from the Austrian or Styrian Grand Prix?
I wish Goodwood had you doing their shoot-out
Very very beautyfull
Good Good gooooood
A day of warmup laps.
Why isn't he rev-matchin?
The MUSIC of a 12cylindered Ferrari!!! What else?
Edit:Can be really interesting if Ferrari make new model with with flat 12.
better driver than the guy in the Pista. But man that Pista acceleration is insane!
You have such videos from motorcycles too?
Goodwood FOS should hire Bozzy for the camera work. Seriously
Heaven 12 carburetors
Any chance of the fp1 video?
Those rims.....
I know I'm late, but this car reminds me of Koenig Special 365BB
Hi, In a BB 512 it’s a V12 and not a boxer,
it is a question of the inclination of the cylinders. But I love this car and very great video, thanks you.
It’s a flat 12, basically a 180 degree V12 so your not wrong
@@Yaro2 there is no V
Ferrari official Brochure BB 512 states:
"number and arrangement of cylinders: 12 horizontal opposed"
there is no V
Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale vibe is strong at this one 0:29
What are the mechanical differences between this and BB/LM
It's got a Golf R exhaust map on it
Think that clutch and driveline are screaming for some heel-toe training.
Do someone know why that are red light switches on 4:40 when brakes the car?
Bozzy we are expecting you to record the F1 2022
No heel toe? Why?
Lovely sound. I remember these 512BB LMs at Le Mans in 1982 with blue flames coming out of the exhausts on the overrun. This driver doesn't heel and toe. Poor transmission.
Did this BB model have Carbs (Weber) or Fuel Injected? Was there a 1979 model. Honestly, I like this competition model better than the 512BB LM.
Pitlane worker: *clapping* "Dude, where's your bracelet!?"
Ferrari Driver: "No, I don't think I will."
Not like I'd want to try and dig that thing out of my fire suit...
If the 512 TR looked and sounded like that. It wouldn't have been a rare car.
Los mejores autos sport son los Porsche uno de ellos basta para vencer a un Ferrari y lambo
sexy... thanks for sharing
Why do SO MANY of these drivers of classic racing cars not know how to heel toe gear change? They shouldn't even be driving the car.
This is actually a road car turned into a track day car.
"Granny shiftin and not double clutching like you should" lmao sorry but it had to be said!🤣
heel and toe is for amateurs.
@@mdub048 why don’t you highlight it and then there might be a shimmer of light a shimmer of hope and a shimmer of interest but until then forget it.
who are you to tell them what they should be doing with their own car. They own it, let em do what they want.
Why is he not heel and toeing downshifts?
I hate to admit it but I this car's sound falls short relative to other V12 engines I've heard on this channel. I'm not saying it sounds bad, it actually sounds good. But it's not that soul stirring sound I've heard from 60's Ferraris. I love 12 cylinder engines so I was disappointed tbh, not with Bozzy of course, fantastic views as always.
You are a hard person to please! Sounded utterly glorious to me!
@@samueldowney2806 lol yeah, I'm very picky. Bozzy recently uploaded a video of a bunch of different cars driving on public roads. I think it was a rally. One of the cars was a 60's era V12 Ferrari and it sounded heavenly. If I can find it I'll link it.

I wish I could hear it at all throttle. I'm going to have to find another example of it to listen to.
Man Who are you🤔🤔🤔
Why no double clutch???
Is Ratarossa watching?
Berlinetta Boxer injection
Ferrari flat 12 is more like older and muscle brother of Porsche flat 6.
Ever heard of toe/heal for down shifts?
Easy bro its for fun ride:)
Ah, yes, the malaise era.
If Ferrari had built that with a proper trans axle would have been more successful as track car.
No double clutching while downshifting ????
Is this a racingdriver ?
Love to drive it if it wasn't for the gated shifter...
Then you don't deserve to drive it.
Ferrari.
Mha,tanto rumore ma il rendimento così così..........
0:55 Hey! Wristband! 1:01 Ma che stranzo!
Compared to modern exotics, this looks like it was designed in about 10 minutes, by a guy who regularly ate red meat and smoked cigarettes. I mean that as a compliment, by the way. Barring a few here and there, Ferraris lost their visual appeal (to me) after the 355, for that same reason.
Awesome car, kinda cringe that the driver of this race car can't rev match his downshifts though
Why? He isnt hurting the gearbox or the engine its a rare Ferrari race car. Why risk damage for a fun track day no incentive to be driving like there is a race. Not cheap to fix.
@@tacklefatkids Rev matching is the correct and most safe way to drive especially in a race track. Not rev matching downshifts can result in a shift lock, locking the rear tires and possibly causjng a crash. Rev matching decreases wear on the synchros and the clutch. This is why all F1 gearboxes are programmed to rev match.
