I found the wrench in a very old vaulted basement under a shelf. It must have been rusting away for a few years.
After rust removal with electrolysis, I discovered that the dimensions of the wrench no longer match the specifications. I realized that the wrench could not be restored to its original condition ;(
I have therefore decided to widen the wrench and engrave a custom Not Teribble Restorations design :)
This gave me the opportunity to try hand engraving for the first time and create a real "Not Terrible Restorations"-Original.
to give the engraving more depth, I cold blued it and polished the whole wrench to a high gloss finish.
I hope you enjoy the new video, in which I used a new camera setting for the first time. So all in all it's a video with a lot of new features.
If you enjoy the video share and leave a like and also a nice comment to win the wrench in the end.

I personally enjoyed the disassembly it was quick and to the point. It’s always nice to see a tool saved and put back into the workforce, if only it were that easy to get lazy people off the couch and to work the world would be a better place. Nicely done as always!
Right on William. Thank you so much for your appreciation
Shared to FB, good luck with your target subs, you deserve it!
@@marklawrence7527 Very nice. Thank you Mark
It's so obvious now, but it has never occured to me that a rusted spanner (UK name) would no longer be the original size and that the jaws would have been eaten away. Just goes to show how you learn something everyday. Liked the engraving, especially the 'spotted' parts.
Thank you Costa. A spanner is such a nice word
Hello again! This is now in my top three favorite restorations, and number one wrench restoration! Finally, someone actually pulls out the calipers and verifies the dimensions! Absolutely made my day! I thought the engraving was an inspired decision as well. I unfortunately have no constructive feedback to offer this time. Thank you for sharing your creative side with us in this video, I really appreciate getting to be an observer as you explore more of your artistic sense.
Yrs yrs yrs I made it :) Thanks James. I really enjoy that you like it so much
I love watching restorations to appreciate the skills involved in taking old & rusty (like me 😘) to shiny and beautiful.
Your creativity with engraving over the pitting was not only a stroke of genius, it resulted in a work of art.
Beautiful piece, Sir.
Thanks Gamma Suz, does your name implicate you're a grandma or that you like grammar 🤔
Just discovered this guy from Mr Patina.. I love restoration videos and the fact he reviews a beer is just a match made in heaven
Hahaha thank you phil
I dig the engraving! Nice job saving that wrench. Due to medical reasons, I don’t get to drink my beloved beverage often, but the beer in this video has made the elite “must try” list. Great video!
Please dont risk your health!!! But if you have kind of free shots once in a while this one is worth it.
@@NTRprojects I get free shots now and then. I wouldn’t risk my health just for a beer. For REAAAAAAALY good chocolate, maybe. Just kidding!
Wow, amazing man! Engraving to cover the damaged spots was such a clever and creative idea! It turned out very nice!
Thanks a ton!
Herr Dr., I have yet to find a single of yours that I dislike. The videography is well done, the restorations are meticulously carried out, and the beer rating is second to none; it really makes me miss living in Bad Aibling. Keep up the great work!
Awesome, thank you! What did you do in Bad Aibling?
@@NTRprojects I was a Soldier.
I recommend cleaning up your buffing wheels. They should be smooth, almost solid looking. Every stray fiber can leave a scratch. They make spiked tools called a buffing rake for dressing the wheels and then once cleaned up, trim all the stray fibers with scissors. They get better with use, so the more compound you add and the more you trim it the better the wheel gets. If you don't want a buy a buffing rake, Any spikey tool that looks similar would work as a replacement.
Thanks for the tip! Will take care of the buffing wheels :)
I love even the simplest of restorations from your channel. Keep up the great work and keep the restorations coming!!!
Nice to see tools restored in former glory or in this case in a usable work of art, watching these videos make me want to see if i could get into restoring things myself despite my current lack of workspace.
Go for it Rene
I really like that engraving style. I'm restoring a '56 Delta Rockwell table saw and a few of the parts will need some "customization". I'm going to try your style and see how it works for me.
I think you could try to heat up the jaw, put a known size 22 screw in it and press it down with a wrench or vice so steel would bend to match the size 22. Then reheat it and slowly cool it down to ensure the steel is elastic and would not crack under pressure.
Great idea actually!
What a tremendously clever customization and retasking of a wrench. Really fine work and most inventive. While I am not a beer drinker I even enjoy your little interludes of beer judging. I find it quite interesting and actually even look forward to it in the videos! Really well thought out and very well executed. A+ once again!
I received more A+ from you than during school. THANK YOU DEREK
Eine wunderbare Verwandlung von "Altmetall" zu Kunsthandwerk. A "wunderbar" transformation from scrap metal into a fine piece of craftsmanship.
Thank you Anderson. May I ask where youre from?
I love the the running commentary on your process and your details of how and why something is being done. Very enjoyable video, thank you for sharing your talents.
Awesome, thank you Zack!
The engraving was a clever solution & looks really good.
Thank you Jessie :) I'm glad you like it
Love the work on this as well as the mixer. Amazing how you bring them back to life, better than new.
Disassembles should always be so easy. Really nice finish work to get rid of the embedded rust.
Thanks Paul. See you on the next video i hope
This transformation ist just amazing. Creative idea to carve it- I love it. The beer is a good choice aswell!
Glad you like it! Youre early this time :)
I know I am VERY late to the party but I just found you! Enjoy all your videos very much. Beautiful engraving, and love all the work you do especially by hand. CHEERS!!
A unique solution to a common problem within heavily rusted articles. Nice outcome. I also appreciate the beer ratings. As I can no longer drink regular beer due to celiacdisease, I enjoy it vicariously through you. Alas, gluten-free beer still leaves something to be desired.
Well said! I will google up Alas
@@NTRprojects I've caused confusion, my apologies! "Alas" is not a beer, it's an exclamation of sadness or regret. Just look up "gluten-free beer" . Europe may have some better choices than are available yet in Texas, USA.
i absolutely love your content..... im a restoration/rustoration addict and the beer testing is a great bonus!!!!! please continue to shine up the world
With all these parts it is complicated to assemble it back in the original way. What system did you use to keep the parts organized?
I took fotos on the way, since you also need to connect everything in the right orientation. So double tricky. I think I took around 867 pictures and I didn't regret a single one of them
Could you add metal to it by welding then reshape to correct size heat treat and re chrome? Just wondering
A very well done restoration! I wonder why it was discarded or forgotten about. Anyway, I'm glad you restored it to a thing of beauty! Enjoyed your video!
I think it was just forgotten at some point or overlooked. But I like those forgotten objects. It's nice to bring back the beauty within
I have watched a few of your videos and found them quite entertaining. I really liked how the wrench turned out. Its really cool and funky. Last year I was diagnosed with diabetes, and as a result I had to give up drinking alcohol. Its nice to find someone who appreciates beer as much as I do. Keep up the great work and good luck to all who enter.
Hey Doug. Im glad that you find some joy in the beer review. I do get quite a few similar comments from people with diabetes. And the fact that you enjoy the beer through my eyes really makes me happy. Have a great day
@@NTRprojects you have a great day as well and keep up the good work your doing.
Love how you integrate beer tasting. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment videlicet
Great job! I want to learn how to do electrolysis and what equipment I need to do it. Rust removers are so expensive and take so long!
I have a playlist with all the videos that involve rust removal with electrolysis I hope the information I give there will help
The engraving turned out really well. You have a creative nack for it. I'd love to see you to more.
I will, I definitely will keep on going. Its just a lot of fun
Hiding the pitting with an engraving was a great idea, good work!
Thank you very much Frugal!
It's still accurate, just for very large values of 19 and 22mm... Very very large values indeed.
Fair enough Kyle. Next time tell me earlier :D
It's lovely that you've highlighted something that many people gloss over when restoring wrenches; that the stated size will certainly have changed.
I've always thought that welding extra material to the jaws(?) would enable them to be resized. I look forward to seeing how your restoration and recreation go
Oh you did such a lovely job, the finish is beautiful and the ending B roll is lovely
Yes you can replace the lost material with weld, but you have to use a hard facing rod, not the common mild steel welding rod, and these are not easy to get a good finish off, as they are designed for things like putting new edges on grader blades and earthmoving equipment, where you add on a lot of metal, and then grind it till it more or less is there, so they are generally large welding rods. Here you would almost have to fill the hole, before grinding most of it away, so as to not get porosity and poor fill. The self fluxing rods or you have to use TIG and a welding filler rod for tooling instead.
@@SeanBZA Thank you for your insight, welding and fabrication is very interesting to me.
Wow nothing to add here. Thank you Sean for your great insights. And thank you Joanna for the great question.
Well done, without words, for such precise work and craftsmanship, the great German quality, one can only bow down, respect from old BG.
Very nice restoration, love how you decided to make it a different size. Engraving looks awesome!
Thank you very much Lucas!
I laughed out loud when the "disassembly" was over. LOL!🤣
Love your solution to the pitting, and your idea to resize the jaws 😊
Glad you like it Scian! Where is this names origin?
@@NTRprojects I have an Irish name, though I come from New Zealand. Most of my ancestors were born in various parts of the British Isles. As Māori would say: “Ko Ngati Ingari, Ngati Eirihi, Ngati Hikoti, me Ngati Werehi ahau” - “I'm English, Irish, Scots and Welsh”. NZ-born 😊🇳🇿
I just found your channel and really enjoyed it so far. Living here in the USA, it may be a little difficult to get some of your beers, but I will keep an eye out.
Awesome, thank you Irving! Hope you find some
Such calming videos! I came here after the KitchenAid video... Where did you learn how to do these restorations?
I just started and I love to save old stuff from the trash
Looks good! Did you consider hardening the metal?
Hey Brian I dont have the opportunity yet to harden a whole piece, since I cant deliver equal heat treatment up to 900 degree. Maybe one day in the future I can harden more than a tip of a screwdriver. But for the engraving it was not too bad that I didnt harden it :P
I think you did amazing look at the engraving and how it enhanced the look. Great job.
Thank you so much Latessa! Did I already mention in the past, that I like your name?
@@NTRprojects no I don't think so but thank you.
Beautiful work. The only thing I suggest is that you re-stamp the size on each end.
Another not terrible piece to unwind my day. LOVED YOUR HUMOR. The disassembly really got me. I may have said this before but I really love how you make time to explain what and why you're doing something along the process. Anyway, I'm really curious. Does the distance between the sacrifice steel and the metal really affect the result of the electrolysis? Or is that a dumb question? 😂😂 Thank you for another great video. Looking forward for more!
I really appreciate you mentioning the humor :D The distance affects it indeed. If you put it to close together the material will disapper only from the closest point. so if you go for equal distance the tool will be treated equal throughout the whole object. I hope this explanation helps. There are no dumb questions ever. If we dont ask, we will not learn!
@@NTRprojects Sadly, there *are* dumb questions, though I haven't seen one here fortunately. There are "questions" that really are no more than devices to strawman the other side, for example. Or a related example where no good answer is possible, like "have you stopped beating your wife?". Or for a less hostile kind, there are questions that contain their own answer (or ask for something that was just mentioned) - the kind where you give the questioner "the look" and they come up with the obvious answer themselves.
On YT there's also the kind where someone ask a question answering which was the whole point of the video, triggering answers like "did you even watch the video?".
Another great job! Coming up with the solution for the pitting was very clever, and everything turned out amazing
Thank you Heather. I'm glad you liked it
Pretty cool, loved the engraving. The disassembly was a bit too complex though.
Dan I hear you and next time I make it slower :D
I like the beer reviews. However since I'm unlikely to ever go back to Germany it's difficult for me to really appreciate them by trying the beer myself.
Fair enough! I will also go for a few internationals in the future so we can share one virtually

Very good job, you gave me a good idea to restore a few wrenches that belonged to my father. Thanks. Greetings from Argentina.
Thanks Odisea (nice name by the way) and best regards to Argentina
Very nice. I like your engraving style. Unique but readable and also just appealing as art. Thumbs up!
Thank you so much JqlGirl 😀
Great job, but you forgot to show the reassembly :)
Thanks for adding the leaderboard.
Hm Pete that's a valid point. I think I have to apologize that I left the project unfinished :)
And btw thanks for reminding me to finally make a leaderboard. But it's not the final solution since I can only write 5000 characters in channel description
@@NTRprojects I'm sure that the final design will match the quality of the rest of your content, and be well worth the wait.
In the meantime, keep enjoying life, restorations and and a good beer :)
I like what you did. But could you have used a dremel then used arc welder to fill gaps then smoothed it out?
Its not easy to weld old stuff like that, but maybe it would have worked
Have you ever thought about getting sponsored by breweries?
That beer's market share will definitly increase.
Also, great job.
Hey Marius. No one called me so far. But how am I supposed to give honest reviews if I have a sponsor :D Best regards to the neighborhood
Should do a restoration of your bench polisher, would be brilliant
Hey Oscar this one is on my list, but the list is long :D
Came out really well. I like the engraving on it a lot! Keep up the great work.
Thanks, I will do Miguel!
To the beer part: One year ago i bought my first own car in Germany and celebrated that night with this exact beer :) 10/10 also creative restoration, subscribed ;)
Great idea with engraving and resizing. Well done
Glad you like it!
Absolutely love this restoration 🛠
Thank you Graham!
@@NTRprojects you're very welcome 🙂
Wow, that was an impressive transformation. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching and commenting
Nice job! That looks really good. The engraving came out nice.
Thanks a lot Ingmar
Wow, well done!👍🏻
Neumarkt isn't far from where I live...my neighbour has a very old Motorcycle produced in Neumarkt (brand: Express)
Hm I need to look that up. I restored two motorcycles off camera. One Simson Star and a Vespa 50N Speciale. So if there is/was a motorbike company in the area of this great beer, it must be good :D
@@NTRprojects the brand later was part of the "zweirad union" before they let the name die. They only built the frames and put engines from other companys in, as many brands did it back then. So there are many different bikes looking very similar from the time around the 50s.
Btw i restored a Honda CB50(1978) i have a lot content on Instagram about it
@@simondaubitzer4777 I will have a look. How can I find you on insta. Thanks for the info on the express

Excellent choice of beer this time!
It sure is!
This was definitely not terrible! I personally really like seeing rust removal with wire brushes. But I know I’m weird...
No Roxanne I think we all here share this interest, so you are not weird !!
Nice comment. I really like what you did with the wrench! You can actually use it now.
Yes! Thank you!
I really liked that restoration, it was really a smart way to approach it. good job.

Complicated disassembly.... when are you going to restore your polishing machine? 😉
It broke down during last resto so I had to change the bearings and the capacitor in a hurry without complet makeover. But I have another one that needs my full attention. It will come one day :D

@@NTRprojects .some lucky sub will be happy to get it..
Why don't use techniques of metallization to fill the corrosion ? Instead engraving, ect.
Hey Sylvain I always try new techniques and I make it dependend on the object, my ideas and my mood. This time I felt like engraving :)
@@NTRprojects Yes, nice beers and videos and I didn't know about engraving, but metal spaying looks like agood idea also...

Shame you lost the numbers from it. I appreciate the jaws were slack but I’d have kept the patina of the handle and mirror polished the ends. Kinda feels like any character of the old is lost...
