  • I test the recovery of the Orion Carrier Plane when having its second stage - the Ministar - achieve orbit quickly enough to turn back to the OCP before it hits the atmosphere.

The pronunciation is INK-oh-nel. And although it has impressive properties, it's a real pain to machine. And certain grades work harden so fast they are a holy terror. You have one shot to drill a hole in a part. If you stop, the bottom of the hole hardens and can no longer be drilled. The hole has to be ground the rest of the way with a high speed carbide end mill.

Awesome stuff. Love big cool spaceplanes like this. Got my own in fact a similar design to your shinkansen and orion systems

Would it increase performance to make a bigger carrier (or add drop tanks), go to a higher speed than 4000m/s, but leave some fuel for a re-entry burn?

A reentry burn would require turning it around twice, which we probably don't have time for (especially if I pay attention to Ministar first) and probably need more robust RCS. I don't think it'll help enough.

As explained in the video, run shuttle.ks. was the old way - the current version uses run ops1.ks. and don't forget the period at the end.
