  • We cast the lines and sail to our first Island in the USA, the famous Block Island. We’ll have to sail close hauled into 16 knots of wind, so the conditions will be perfect to test Atticus II’s windward performance and to see how Oso handles life at sea.

    When tacking having the staysail deployed will help the yankee headsail to tack. Just wait till the yankee has crossed over before tacking the staysail. This creates a slot between the two forestays that is the key to ease tacking of the yankee.

    I really enjoy your adventure! I have watch current shows, but have gone back to watch from the time you bought your current boat! Really enjoying. I lived in Greenville, NC and have sailed into Little Washington from the coast with a friend. I grew up sailing on a small 80 acre lake in Va. Had several small boats until my last, a Jet 14 which I had to give up I the early 80 when I took my son sailing in Oriental, NC on a great day. At 2 he didn’t see the fun! Cried and Cried until after 20 minutes I turned back, not to really sail again until a couple of years ago when my son was dating a girl in San Francisco that was a member of a sailing club. We sail a Hunter 36 in the bay!! It all came back. They thought I never stopped! White caps, great wind! This time my son lived it (my wife, not so much)!
    Well enough about this 73 year old. I envy you, encourage you and greatly respect your sense of adventure! Good luck with the little one. I will continue to follow you guys! Happy sailing and adventuring! Life is just one big adventure!!

    You could also try sailing the Genoa through its slot. Tack but leave the sheet tight to windward. Once the tack is completed ease the jib sheet out, the sail billows through the slot, and easing the sheet helps it blow through the slot.
    I also use a 6’ dyneema strop luggage tagged to the jib, with a continuous sheet attached by an alpine butterfly to the other end. There is nothing to snag on the inner forestay, so the jib is full and pulling on the lee side before the jib sheets reach the inner stay.

    • @rwringstaff
      @rwringstaff Před 3 lety

      this is what I was thinking. Just back wind it and let it pull thru.

    • @akathesquid5794
      @akathesquid5794 Před 3 lety

      he has a genoa not a jib so most of his sail is aft of the inner stay. backfill works with a jib, especially high cut yankee, which is why most of us cutter sailors fly those instead. Add in a stays'l and tacks are flawless.

    • @colini8328
      @colini8328 Před 3 lety +1

      The boat is designed and rigged as a cutter, so jib and staysail is probably the answer and definitely worth trying. Its tempting to think 2 sails are easier than 3 but its not the case if the boat is rigged that way.

    • @jamnl100
      @jamnl100 Před 3 lety

      I have my cutter stay on a highfield lever, if I am using the genoa I just run it as a sloop rig by unclipping the cutter stay and moving it aside. When rigged as a cutter I revert to the furling yankee and a hanked on staysail.

    I loved your comments at 14:00 for it truly touches on something us humans tend to forget; It is darkest before the dawn, though I walk in the darkest valley the path will lead to mountain peaks, change is not bad, it just exists yet is what we make of change that matters most.
    We cannot ever know the future, but if our hearts are filled with love then the future can hold amazing possibilities and your journey from no boat, to Atticus, to Atticus II is testament to that. Hearing you say that reminded me that I too had been in dark place, feeling like I did not know what would happen next, but as I look back 3 months from "the moment" to today, I see that my Faith and belief in walking towards joy got me to here, like you guys. Continue in Love and I will continue to love your journey.

    Two things. Have a 2001 Pacific Seacraft 34 that I sail single handed 95%. When tacking, if you let the yankee, or Genoa in your case, backwind just right before sheeting in on the new tack, it can be pretty smooth. The “I love this boat” sentiment will only increase. Every time I sail I love my boat more. You’ll be amazed at what she can handle. You chose well. I hope we cross wakes and can share a beer or two.

I am a live aboard blue water sailor with over 30 years experience, and you are right when you say there are electrical system changes that need to happen. I have been there and done that a number of times, failing somewhat on my first few attempts, but learned a lot in the process. Great vid. Tacking? Consider a turning block at the base of the forestay, a tack line attached to the clew of the sail and then led back to the cockpit. When tacking, one crew pulls the 'tack' line to lead the sail fwd of the inner forestay, then releases when foresail has crossed. BTW, BI is one our favorite destinations as it is for many, many NE cruisers. Good luck.
