When we first bought our Sailboat 3 years ago, it was only outfitted for light weekend sailing. Since then we’ve transformed her into a floating home with all of the necessary systems to keep our family safe and comfortable, for extended periods of time, while living out in nature. Sanitation, laundry, fresh water, ventilation, even the ability to produce these videos. We can run all of these systems for long stretches of time, completely off-grid. But all of these systems ultimately rely on one thing, electricity.
Now our system is relatively robust but this week a chain of events lead to our electrical system completely shutting down, and we find ourselves anchored off of a remote island in the middle of the Aegean Sea, without any of the systems that we rely on to survive. And it’s up to us to figure out what on earth we can do about it.

Perhaps normal wet lead batteries are no sooo bad??? 😉😉😉
Did I hear that right? You drain your Laundry into the bilge? Aren't you afraid of it smelling like a sewer in pretty short order? I'd drain that overboard or at least into a graywater tank and then overboard when you"re offshore.
Love Oso and the knife set skit!🤣
"Chased" is a wrong title.
This video got me to wondering why you don't have a high water alarm in your bilge, especially since you have critical energy infrastructure within what seems to be an easily flooded area. My own bilge pump failure prompted me to mount a second float switch to the wall of the bilge at a level that would indicate bilge pump insufficiency. In my case this switch is integrated into my monitoring system so I get notified if bilge water is rising. I also get notified if my bilge pump runs for more than a few seconds. However, I don't live on my boat. You do, so an audible tone would be a very good, and cheap, investment.
Watching this video, I was reminded of a recent video I watched about the recent loss of the Theros and its crew in the North Atlantic. The Theros had been outfitted for travel without the use of fossil fuels. It used a battery pack from a Nissan Leaf, and those batteries have been suspected as the possible cause of a fire, which may have resulted in the loss of the Theros. Please be careful with those lithium-ion batteries, which, if damaged, may be prone to catching on fire. I really enjoy keeping up with Jared, Desiree, Isabella and Oso every week on their adventures. Be safe and well!
I am curious about the depths in the bay south of Pedi (Thessalona?) and at Kythnos, where you anchored in recent videos. We were in Turkey a few weeks ago for the first time and generally stayed away from places where we couldn't anchor is less than 9 meters (had 70 meters of chain) and where I could not get a stern line to shore. Since it was our first time in the area and we were only going to be on the boat for a week, we didn't want to take time to hunt around for secluded places we were comfortable anchoring, so we usually went somewhere with a quay or dock we could tie to. I would enjoy anchoring in more private spots but it seems like it might take a lot of time, nosing around in bay after bay but finding them too deep. Now that you've been in the Aegan a while, what scope are you comfortable with over night? Your rode seems to be hanging straight down often, but could be that there is no current or wind. Thanks.
.great video. No bullshit, eat right, train hard. It's not rocket science! Well done!
Unless the grid goes down, most people's homes don't shut down completely with one incident. You did a great job identifying and fixing the problem. The cause was minor and the amount of water in the bilge not excessive, but your SV does seem vulnerable. With ocean sailing, it not too rare to take on blue water and in really rowdy conditions some water below or excess water in the bilge does happen. These are the conditions sailors least need a system shut down, so I would be thinking about improving onboard resilience.
that wouldnt end so good if it was an american warship now, eh?
Yes Sir, I wondered why no foghorn.
Why wouldn't you want to have more amps with less RPMs?
Living in a house, our world usually ceases to function because a squirrel gets into one of the neighborhood transformers and blows it when he fries himseIf. Unlike your situation, the power company just sends a truck and usually has it fixed in a couple of hours.😅
No idea where you're planning on leaving your boat in Spain but can highly recommend Torrevieja Marina International. We've kept our boat there for several years, the marina is great and is also the cheapest on the south east coast of Spain, (with no loss in service). Also, as veteran long distance cruisers ourselves (Pacific/Caribbean/Atlantic)😅, we've now settled in Torrevieja ourselves and would be happy to keep a check on Atticus in your absence.
re: abundance of 'touristy' stuff tends to erode what made the place special. I had the same experience just this last weekend. I took my family to Colorado to a small little mountain town we've loved for years because it hadn't yet been over-commercialized. Unfortunately, that has now changed with an over-abundance of commercialism. You can't fault the people who live there, they just want to make a better living. But unfortunately I may not return because that's not what I enjoy.
We have similar walls in Croatia and they are there so the sheep don't eat all the grass at once (at to provide shade for the sheep)... And the only way to get to the earth so there WAS any grass was to pick up all the stones and put them somewhere else (on the walls)
your maps you display on the video are just top notch. love how you explain where you are at and where you are going. way to keep that boat going!
It will be to your benefit if you follow NAVTEX published from now on.
Why didn’t you put anti chafing on your lines?
Wasn't very smart of you to enter a miltary practice zone wasn't it? 🫣
In cause of nausea you can use Meclozin, also in pregnancy
That was epic. How you guys kept going with all that thrown at you. I just wanted to wrap Desiree up in a hug, poor honey, pregnant AND on a horrible passage. You’re amazing all of you. Love Steve & Jen!
Who cares what you mean.
Jordan, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have relatives in Arizona and have been going there for years. One place we liked was Jerome . It was a sleepy ghost town with no one living there but a few hippies. Now 40 years later it's a bustling tourist trap with tour buses and tours and crowds. Sedona is another one that was a small town with beautiful mountains all around. Now it is so built up with three story parking garages and up scale shops. Last but not least is Prescott. We went to a small shop for authentic Tex/Mex food and a guy walks in with a 10 gallon hat and a colt 45 on his hip. Today I think its a Starbucks. Tourism is kind of a necessary evil but it does change the authentic character into a Disney land experience. Keep looking for those out of the way places.
thank you guys great video too bad you have some problems but youre good in fixing it , be safe happy and in good health mama see you next time enjoy
Yes it happens to homes as well. I had inverter that was updated and then it when completely off line. NO Solar. Ended up having the company express out a new inverter to swap out. It took about 72 hours to get up and running again.
Wow! Bu muhteşem! Tebrikler 👏🏻🎉🎈
Turkey is the secret threat to all of western civilization!!! Mark my words
Hope you can source another battery, maybe in Piraeus. The Corinth canal is really amazing, you will have a blast going through there!
''secret war'' have you seen our neighbours???? all of them tried to invade us in the past, none succeeded. here is why
Hey it’s JT awesome video just got all caught up we been busy a lot me and my parents we moved to Ohio last year building a new tugboat now too
So cool.
Absolutely fascinating learning about these new places you visit. I will never actually get to see them but it feels like I’m travelling too as I watch your journey. Desiree you are adorable! You so often make me laugh with your honest feelings. “Pregnant Desiree gives two thumbs up and tears.” 😄 Love you guys.
I spent a few days on the island of Paros about 1984. The community was very accommodating and pleasant. They had an election at the time which caused a town meeting to occur which went on for many hours in the evening and was such a refreshing experience from U.S. elections and discussions! One of the most fascinating experiences was to take a day to walk around the island (literally circumnavigate on land). It was nine or ten hours. Along the road were many memorials with mind-blowing dates from over a thousand years ago! What a great area to have existed in for the last few weeks! You could have done much worse!
Living on a boat and being pregnant is rough. I can't.
What a shame, you don't even mention the name of the country.
17:14 that rock formation looks like an ancient petrified tree...
Jeez , talk about Idiots at sea. That's a terrible boat with a huge spend, are you guys NOTZ ? What NOT to do in the sailing world, but hey I had a good laugh at these clowns
Another baby!! I need to go back and watch old videos. Congratulations 🎉👏
Awesome documentary about the production process! Are those krakens self righting?
you mean if they roll they come back up? I think so most monohulls do.
It was nice to see a glimpse of Paros I spent some time there in the 90,s those were the days.
looks like u got a bit of lee helm
How are you able to regulate the output of your alternator with a computer?😮
Wow that teared me up! I’ve started at the beginning to watch your videos so I’m a couple of years behind, but following you like this it means so smush more watching your story unfold. Made me laugh about feeling it would be a walk in the park, only to get the queasies and fatigue. I felt for you so much. Thanks for a brilliant journey so far even though I’m a few years behind, and baby will be born now.
Thank you!
😮 Atchung, do not showoff ,wearing xpensive gadgets,,,harshloot
Thoroughly enjoy watching your adventures and the captivating way you produce them! Are you guys coming back to Sarasota when you return to Florida?
Türkiye is not a Muslim country Only the living majority are Muslims
WELL SECURED WELL SAFETY BUILT YACHT
I’m in love 😍 I now know what I’m buying. Excellent saloon design that is really tall for a 50 ft boat. Cheers on the video as well. A walk through that flows like a conversation and thank God you guys don’t open every drawer and storage space. You got a new subscriber, and Kraken just won a client. ❤
Your comments at 12 minutes. Where I live, just outside Chicago, if it rains hard for a day or two the basement can be flooded with sewer water from all that live in the area, happened 3 or 4 times. We solved the problem by installing a type of check valve in the sewer line but your waste flow is limited to the volume of the sewer pipe between the house and street until the sewerage reverts to normal flow. You can't flush the toilets or shower or do dishes, if you do it will back up but will be our waste in the basement. So yes, crazy things do happen to the regular homeowner and we have to be on guard. At 18:29 your comment reminded me of a friends comment about his honeymoon to Alaska. He and his bride took a small plane to a glacier. They were awed by the fact that the only sound was the wind. Sounds awfully close to what you are experiencing. I hear the interstate where I am. Lucky you three.
