    Ok I had all these thoughts throughout the race. As a MTB rider, these would have been both exhilarating and exhausting. Also, I thought on a bike I would have ripped through all this. But then I saw that you were in the Masters group. Not sure what age, but damn, my respects sir. I watched the whole video and you did absolutely fantastic. Kept going no matter what. Loved it!

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety +3

      Thank you! I am very glad you enjoyed it. It was right after this race that someone in the pit area saw me pull into the pits with my GoPro and asked if I had a channel so he could see my video. I told him I did not have one, but later thought if people would like to see it, I could put it out there. I went to so many races when I was younger and I have trouble remembering them all, so I figured it would be good to have the videos later when I get old. :-). It was a VERY muddy race for sure. Not sure if you could tell how slick it was. :-) The Masters Class is 50 years old and up, I am 56. Many years ago, I went through some back issues and was not able to do this type of thing, so I feel very blessed to be able to do it again.

    this was awesome!. Watching this Im wondering if a handlebar switch for the mode selector would be beneficial in terms of pulling mode 1 on downhills for regen to extend the battery life to maybe make the whole 2 hours.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety +8

      A handlebar switch to go into mode one on down Hills would be great. But it would be even better if KTM had regenerative braking on Level 3 to begin with!

    Interesting how having a silent bike makes it easy to you've got traffic behind. When I race XC in TX, most starts were live engine. Electric is a huge advantage in your starts. I would expect the rest of the class to demand live engine starts to even the playing field before long.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před rokem +1

      Yes, I always am the first off the line for sure. However, the Freeride is a bit lower power than a lot of motorcycles I am raring against, probably similar to a 4-Stroke 250. So if there is a long straight before the first turn, some riders can catch up to me. Surprisingly, no-one had ever really complained about this advantage, at least not to me anyway. :-) But with a race typically about 2 hours, I think most racers realize that rider skill and time is really going to be the difference in the race.

    • @yzScott
      @yzScott Před rokem +1

      How does it feel in the woods, weight wise? I rode a YZ 426 and then 450 soon after their introduction. Then I returned to a YZ250 two stroke. In the woods, the lighter weight was more help than the extra power.
      Most people I've seen riding these bikes are not doing this kind of tight single track racing. I've wondered how they feel in the trees? I'm sure the power delivery is great for the purpose.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před rokem +1

      @@yzScott The Electric Freeride feels very light in the woods compared to a gas bike, even though it is probably not lighter. I think it is mostly because of less rotating mass. Keep in mind though if you drop it, you will notice that it is pretty heavy when you pick it up. LOL It feels great in the trees and it has a big advantage that you do not have to shift gears. You are always in the right gear and you can go as slow as you want and never stall the engine. Even though it does not have a ton of power, it is super smooth and very effective. I find myself trying to make up time at the start and end of long straight stretches by carrying more speed out of the turn and into the next turn after the straight. I would like to have a little more power, but I do not consider it a significant disadvantage. It is really more about how fast you can snake through the woods, not how fast you can accelerate. My friend rides a RMZ 250 and he loves to ride my motorcycle just because it is so simple to ride and very smooth.

    12.2.21 Round 6 was worse than round 9. How long would you estimate the electric motor to last riding like you do? KTM should give you some kind of sponsorship for doing the videos showing their bike. Looks like the bike to have for these kind of races. Will the 2022 model have any improvements over then 2021? Somehow you were able to overtake the 1st place person. You need a pit crew to help change out the battery and save some time.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety +1

      LOL, Yes, KTM should sponsor me! Or they should at least reprogram the motorcycle for me to give me regen braking on level 3! :-)
      A pit crew would help a lot on the battery swap. My very first race with it I had a friend do the swap for me. It was great. I figure I get 17 to 19 miles on a battery depending on race conditions. Maybe a little over an hour of hard riding.
      No improvements for 2022 that I know of.
      As I later found out, 1st place actually crashed in the really wide and fast slick area just before the end of the last lap. That is how I ended up getting 1st even though there was never a pass.

Congrats by the way.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před rokem

      Thank you. I did not change much other than tires. The tires that come on the motorcycle are junk. Especially for a mud race. I usually run tires good for mud, like a Starcross 5 Soft front tire and an IRC M5B on the rear. I also tried an IRC VE 33s gekkota that I liked pretty well, although I did not care for the front tire of that model. I took off the rear tail-light and plastic piece underneath. I have found that it is very important to plug up the hole that the wire went through to get to the battery area, as this will accumulate a lot of mud and can cause issues with the water pump relay that is in that area.

    Great race and battery swap! I hope ktm gives us auto aux battery failover + extended ranges in future models.
    A bigger battery also makes sense since the free ride weighs significantly less (204lbs) than other 250 (218lbs) and 350 (228.8lbs) bikes anyways!
    With a bigger battery it would still beat other gas bikes due to lack of clutch+shifter. Instant electric speed+torque kinda makes it unfair tbh. Thats what allowed you to pass them up from the start and helped you keep the lead.
    I also wish they ditched the 220volt socket - such a pain to charge if you dont have that or a generator.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety +4

      Those stock tires in this kind of mud are useless. They clog up immediately and are just like slick tires. Many people like Michelin Starcross 5 intermediate tires on the front and rear. Those are great all around tires. For the mud, I like the Michelin Starcross 5 soft in the front and the IRC M5B in the back. Go for the 110 size for the rear if you can find it. If not, the 120 will work.

    ktm freeride: Rated output: 9kW (12 hp) @ 4500 rpm Torque: 42 Nm
    i can tell its wet and you are not a pro or an A rider and maybe thats why the free ride appears very very slow. never the less it still didnt make it 2 hours? i guess if someone ripped it, it would last an hour and NOT able to do a two hour race worth a crap, not competitive at all and a 125xc would be as fun and wax it off the trail.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, it was very wet and muddy, so it was very difficult to go fast. Some of the areas were complete slop, but I think I kept up my speed fairly well to keep the tires cleaned out. The reason I won the race in the end is because the guy in first slid off the trail in one of the slop sections. I swapped the battery half-way through the race, so you are correct it would not make 2 hours with one battery. The mud can drain the battery even more. I figure it can go an hour on a battery running it pretty hard. A 125 could keep up with it well, but it is of course a lot of shifting and clutching, which is the whole point of what I am trying to avoid. It is a lot of fun just concentrating on riding and not operating the clutch, gear shifter and rear brake on the foot. I do have an order in for the Stark Varg, and I think it will be a big performance step up. Look for a review on it comparing it to this bike when I get it.

    What the problem with your bike? You let to many people pass you. It didn't seem you had power when you need it.

    • @edfessler
      @edfessler  Před 2 lety

      I'm not sure when in the race you are talking about, but I can only ride a motorcycle so fast for a 2 hour race. That goes for gas or electric. If someone follows me for a significant amount of time, or if they yell or rev their engine, I typically let them around. It is not good to hold up other riders that are faster. Notice that other riders let me around as well if I beeped at them. If I know they are in my class that may be different, especially if it is the last lap, then they have to earn the pass for sure! That happened in the K-XCR Round 9 which is posted. The rider in my class would not let me around in the last lap, which is fair. I had to make a risky move climbing a slick rock wall out of a creek. But it worked! That being said, my motorcycle is limited to about 45 mph, so there is at least one place on the course that someone behind me could take advantage of that. I do not consider that to be a significant disadvantage. Also, the motorcycle has plenty of power for woods racing. Of course not as much power as my KTM 300! LOL!
