  • My first race. Could've done better if not crashing twice. Finished 37th/70 in Men's 30-39 category.
    The last few minutes were not recorded due to insufficient battery.

    Love the video. Thanks so much. Have signed up for 2023 Fuego XL 65-miler for 60+ category. Using your footage to psych me up.

    Great video.

  • @starterandroiddevelopment4613

    Hey thanks for the video - I was in the same race but 50-59 category. I came in 57th at 2:19 … was hoping maybe I caught you but unlikely from the timing I see. My cohort was 108 racers and I was constantly surrounded by a large group… I had terrible starting position and probably made a huge difference for my result.
    Also my first MTB race. So fun!

      2:19 is not bad! This was also my first race ever, and there were some tactics/lessons I learned from it about racing the field. Hope both of us can do better next time!

    I was beside myself that La Gravila & Fuego 40K was the same course. Logistically, I can see why but maybe different days? Idk, it was bonkers and so many of the gravel riders were way over their head and yelling at XC racers out of what seemed like frustration.

    • @skywalker8320
      @skywalker8320  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah the race was a bit messy this year. Too many people on the course at the same time. I heard in the past, there were difference categories for each age group, and they started in different batches.

      @8584zender Před 2 lety +2

      @@skywalker8320 Not just different age groups, different USAC categories. Fields were 50ish riders max with 1' start intervals, the course rode the opposite direction with a lot of pavement and fireroad in the beginning to stretch it out by fitness level. Since SoC is no longer USAC sanctioned, it's turned all the distance events effectively into Fondos. Maybe this is for the best. I guess they're trying to make it more of a casual event and not really competitive racing.

    Great event. Only problem I would point out, is that too many all sent out at one time. Several categories all jammed up at the start. They should have sent out ‘waves’ of only about 20 cyclists at a time, with at least three minutes apart from each other. Yes, this may take more time, but much better for all. Anyone disagree?

    • @skywalker8320
      @skywalker8320  Před 2 lety +1

      Can't agree more. I heard they used to at least send out waves by categories (cat 1/2/3) but now the organizer changed and so were the rules.

    Great job! I saw myself in your video at the 26:45 mark making way for the faster XC racers. Why they put us gravel riders on the same course I can't understand.

    • @skywalker8320
      @skywalker8320  Před 2 lety +1

      Easier planning for them, but yeah some segments of this course are a bit too much for gravel bikes. I thought the gravel race would have a different course.

      @Keith Dunlop This is the GoPro's handlebar mount. I also have a chest mount for some shorter, more casual rides.

    • @skywalker8320
      @skywalker8320  Před 2 lety +1

      This was GoPro 9 HERO, 1080p@30fps. With this setting, one battery could last for about 2 hours. If I hadn't made some mistakes and bad choices (crash, position fighting), it was close to lasting throughout the race.

    • @stylgen
      @stylgen Před 2 lety

      @@skywalker8320 Thanks for the info! I've been using a GoPro myself with higher FPS settings and was wondering why the battery wasn't lasting out over an hour so this helped out a lot plenty. I don't know too much about XC quite yet as I'm only starting to race this year in criteriums, but from what I've seen you do looks great to me!

    For this kind a trail you had to much profile on youre tyres. That cost al lot off energy

      Yeah my first race and learned a lot from those bad choices. Should've put more power on the hills to get over them then rest, instead of aiming for a steady pace. As my friend put: "you are racing the field, not racing yourself". And my descending skill still sucks...

    • @8584zender
      @8584zender Před rokem +3

      yeah especially sitting in front of a monitor analyzing it at 60fps 😉 Seriously, it's a different story when your legs and arms are shot, eyes are full of dust, about to vomit from an hour+ of anaerobic repeats all while trying to avoid other racers.
