Why The Second Bugatti Veyron was Even Better - ISSIMI Spotlight feat. Jason Cammisa - Ep. 01

- This is a tale of two Veyrons: the original, 1001-hp Veyron 16.4 and Grand Sport were created by Ferdinand Piëch to reclaim his Le Means Mulsanne-Straight top-speed record from Peugeot. But in addition to breaking the 407 km/h record, the chairman of Volkswagen would do it in a luxurious street car.
Then, there was a SECOND Veyron. The 1200-hp models used a completely new carbon tub, new body panels, and had completely different suspension and steering tuning. The Super Sport and the Grand Sport Vitesse look like the original 1001-hp Veyron EB 16.4, until you start comparing them closely. They're actually different cars.
The 1200-hp cars drive more like Lotuses than Veyrons - with great steering, willing handling, and of course, obscene power.
This video is a gorgeous, moving Wikipedia entry on the Veyron, quickly discussing Ettore Bugatti's OCD, his Molsheim castle, Ferdinand Porsche's grandson Ferdinand Piëch, who wanted the Porsche 917's top-speed record back, and insider information Cammisa gleaned from his time with Bugatti engineers - including a story of how the first 1200-hp test car accelerated so quickly that it exploded its A/C compressor. And of course, Loris Bicocchi, who tuned both Veyrons, but who was allowed to have a little more fun on the 1200-hp cars.
The car photographed in this video is the 2012 Super Sport 300 - the 300th, and final, fixed-top Veyron ever produced. (There were 150 open-top cars.) Total production for the Super Sport was just 30 units - just 8 for the U.S. market.

This very special Veyron is currently offered for sale by ISSIMI - please visit issimi.com for more information on this car.
==
Bonus footage at the end: Various iPhone videos from Jason Cammisa's personal archive of what the Veyron's quad-turbocharged W-16 sounds like. The four clips were recorded in the convertible Veyrons - the first two in the 1001-hp Veyron Grand Sport, and then two additional ones in a 1200-hp Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. The acceleration videos were recorded on closed roads and runways.

VW Corrado would be great. Subaru SVX maybe?
Any Koenigsegg and mclaren f1

The Veyron and the Chiron are dismissed as "overrated" so often that they are, quite ironically, some of the most underrated cars .
Quacktics are Go they get all this hate because of other hypercars. Take Koenigsegg fans (I’m one myself), they hate in Bugatti to the max, but the truth is these are completely different purposed cars. One of a raw, hard to handle bullet and the other is essentially a 1000hp+ Bentley.
Bugatti was the best early on with the Veyron. Once they broke world records, that Koenigsegg destroyed, people just made it fun to hate Bugatti. They're mad really bc everyone knows that Bugatti has the "It" factor, whether or not they're the fastest anymore.
That's because they haven't ever seen one driven before. I once tried to keep up with a Chiron on I-95 in Philly, I had to do triple digits just to catch up, and it took me in my dinky ass Impreza 15 seconds to do it when it took him 3.
Best analogy ive heard is that a Koeniggsegg might take you to the same speed as a Bugatti, but the Bugatti is the most comfortable you’d ever be at that speed. Two very different engineering marvels.
virginia creeper watching videos of a Bugatti and koenigsegg at high speeds, you see one is planted and comfortable even at 200mph+ and one throws u around in your seat. Both amazing, but you really can’t compare them. Not to mention Bugatti could go extreme with the backing of Volkswagen group if they wanted to
This explains how the top gear test track time improved so much between versions. You can't just shave 2s a lap from just boosting the power!
Even if its a powerlap, 2 secs is a big improvement. Wonder what newer bugs will do..!!
its 200 hp up, and like 200 kg down. That alone made most of the difference, the nicer handling probably made it more fun to drive than it gave laptime.
@@Obi-WanKannabis wasn't it 110 lbs / 50kg less?
@@muhammedzayan4399 The Veyrons handle much better than the Chirons. The Chirons have an estimated max lateral acceleration of 1.0 - 1.2gs of force. The Veyron SuperSport has a confirmed 1.4 g of max lateral acceleration on a skidpad
@@R9naldonot acceleration but cornering. The Chiron is much better.

Josh Amann The first ones kinda look a little dated

True. Veyron L'Or Blanc is one of the most beautiful supercars ever in my opinion
The sound of the veyron at the end is like the car is legit BREATHING AND ALIVE
Are you saying cars aren't alive, Daniel?
Anyone who hates the Veyron isn’t welcome in my house. That’s a car is a masterpiece.
I never Not Liked the Veyyron.

I like the veyron, I hate veyron fans
I just hate alot of the colors the original veyron came in, but the actual design is masterful
Its far away from a masterpiece, its overpriced, overrated, looks like and egg and althought its very good on a straight line, its sucks balls in corners.

This is, by far, one of the best videos from Issimi. Keep pumping out more of this, Jason and the rest of you at Issimi. I think this could've been a part of the Icons series though.
Thank you! We can't safely film ICONs right now... but we can do these SPOTLIGHT episodes, where I don't have to burn through 5 sets of tires. It's my hope that this gives you enough information where you don't feel like you're missing something. So: thank you! :-D
@@JasonCammisa it's cool Jason. Thanks! By the way, what's the name of this alter ego of yours?

Loris is one of the most competent, talentened yet humble and caring people in the industry. Pretty much anything he put his hands on turned out great. It's frankly incredible that someone who started working as a warehouse worker (mind you, at Lamborghini) would end up developing something like the Veyron.
Great video Cammisa!
Fascinating! And isn’t it funny that Piech was responsible for car commonly referred to as Ze SS...
No, it is not funny at all. I believe that this abbreviation was forbidden in Germany for quite a long time.

@@S8ER I agree
You gotta give some credit to VW when it comes to these things.
I couldn't imagine GM, Ford or Toyota pulling off something like this just for shits and giggles.
What do you think the Ford GT40, MOPAR wing cars, and HEMI Dart were. They were all record breaking cars.
@@Turshin You are joking right? Record breaking 60 years ago compared to relative lawnmowers.
VR5, VR6, W8, W12, W16, V10 TDI...and the list goes on and on and on...
@@Turshin I completely get the sentiment, there have been many american greats. But there has never been something on a Veyron level, or Koenigsegg level. Both of those manufacturers never even raced those models in competition. It's purely an engineering dick measuring contest, and the results can be amazing.
For some reason VW Group didn't mind losing money for this. GM and Ford would never lose this much money to make any car. So... yeah, credit given where is due.
This was SO OVERDUE! Thank you for finally giving this car it’s due.. I definitely learned a few things, and as usual, you conveyed all that info in an entertaining manner that made it really fun to watch. Good work!
Bugatti builds planes from the road. That’s the best way I can explain the engineering, performance, and price to people.
i mean koenigsegg tests and builds their cars on an old air force base
I had no idea how different the two veyrons are. Great stuff!

Jason, you are my car idol. If I was a kid, there would be a Jason Cammisa poster in my room (probably next to a Scirocco lol). I love and appreciate that you’re putting out such great content. This is Jason at his best. Only he can be so intimately informative and exquisitely entertaining at the same time! So good to find you again on CZcams! Your french "english accent" is spot on Signore Cammisa!

Bicocchi crying from relief that someone outside the company finally appreciated his work is the sweetest reaction I have ever heard.
One of if not the best video of the Veyron out there right now. Long live ISSIMI!
Man I’m looking forward to the next installment of this series!
I remember you, Jason, in head 2 head. The episode of the LFA and the MP4-12C. That is my favorite.
Simply brilliant video! We want more Jason!
I feel so slighted that Jason has been here a year ago yet I'm just now finding out. Top notch quality and entertainment each and every time. We want more!
Loved this video! I have never heard about all those differences between the two!

Thanks for producing these great videos for us while we are confined to our homes! You are by far the best car journalist out there!
Why have I just stumbled on this now! I’ve missed getting my honest and intriguing car reviews from Jason for so long. ❤️❤️❤️

Another amazing video content from you Jason.. i'm shocked every time i watch your videos, didn't think it could get better, but it can.. i' ve said it before and i going to say it again THE BEST AUTOMOTIVE PRESENTER there is! 👍
Thank you! :)
This was a great video, I hope you guys continue to make stuff like this!
Jason this was like the best episode you have ever ever done! I’m so sorry I didn’t see it sooner. Presumably, this work helped you seal the deal w/ Hagerty. Your first hand experience and authenticity - as always - differentiate. However this is such an iconic machine that consensus seems to have really miss understood, me included. Thx! 🌈
Brilliant content - keep it coming.
Oh that development story is amazing and emotional...
Great Video! Well explained history a lot of people never heard of I guess. The Turbo Noises are really sweet!
The storytelling in this video is beautiful, i’ve never been a fan of the Veyron but always appreciated what it could do and what it did for the cars that came after it. Watching this gave me a new appreciation I never had before, brilliant
An amazing presentation.
Amazing, I'd love to hear how you think the Chiron stacks up. Also It'd be great to do a piece of Ferdinand Piech. Flawed as he was, the man was a mechanical and business genius (plus I'd love to hear more about the development of the Phaeton).
I love this, i hope you're making more of these.
Thanks for another great video, Jason!
For those who have the chance to enjoy the Veyron SS as a mid-engine supercar, nice
Amazing video! Please please do more of these. But maybe adjust the audio levels a bit? This video is really really quiet.
Well done! I like how this has great production, is extremely informative, and a little technical, yet allows the host to show his personality. But, most importantly, the host isn't there because of his personality - he's there because he's had the schooling, done the work and earned the spot through the car world and keeps earning it by going heavy on the history and details. (But, seriously, Jason, in one of the shots we can see you need some sleep - don't work too hard and get rest!)
This was great. No suggestions for what to cover next as I'd rather just be surprised by something I'd never think of. Just wanted to say its so refreshing to see a video that looks at a car in depth but in a way no one else does. Facts and figures are boring, the stories you tell mixed with the tech explanations you offer make for a truly great experience
The SS veyron has really grown on me in recent years. The rear end with the dual rear wing is to die for
..."faster than a Boeing....at take-off" is such deceptive wordplay.
I'm more graceful than a ballerina squatting on a toilet
"faster than a fighter jet sitting still at the end of the runway"
What he's saying is if engineers hadn't ensured it had neutral or negative lift, it could take off near top speed and crash catastrophically
@@CAL1MBO This comment and your profile picture reminded me of when topgear raced the veyron against the Jet fighter lol
I think you've misunderstood his point, it's about how impressive it is that the Veyron reaches far greater speeds than are enough for an enormous 161 Tonne 787 Dream Liner to actually take flight.
Where as I think you took it as him comparing the Veyron's top speed to the Boeing's top speed. Which I agree, would be a silly comparison.
I guess what he’s alluding to is that the presenter added the “...at takeoff!” like it would be something even more special but really it’s the slowest phase of a flight
This was amazing! I hope there are more because this was fantastic. Great insight
awesome work! hope to see more of these types of videos.
I click on like before I play watching these.
Great video! The Veyron is great, I hope you eventually get to drive the Chiron!

Jason you are killing it, one of the better car related videos ive seen in the last time
This video has taught me more about the 1200bhp car than I ever knew. I never knew they changed THAT MUCH on it! I really appreciate this video!
I dont really like the veyron, but i admire its achievements, and i really admire the hard engineering that went into making it. Glad it exists.
I know Vitesse is a French word and all, but it just sounds like the model name for a womens bicycle
It means "speed".
Best video on the channel so far! More like this please!
Great video! It’s on my bucket list now.
@2:45 is incorrect. The list of requirements that the engineers quit was for the Phaeton, not Veyron, as he wanted, and did build the best car in the world. Test bed for, and superior to, (other than turbos) the Bentley. ;)
Regardless, two masterpieces.
But one thing remains same for me

Can't afford now: lol
Why can't I like this video more than once.. the knowledge of the presenter and the production value is simply superb !!!

Weirdly enough, he looks like Adam Sandler.

This was excellent. Thank you, Jason & crew! I was not aware that there were any meaningful differences in character between the "generations" of Veyron, so this was quite interesting.
