Black mantis-like vehicle uses Cold War hangar as creative burrow

  • When the doors of aircraft shelter 610 on the Soesterberg air base open, there’s no way to prepare for the “giant arthropod”, ”steel monster”, “monstrous black behemoth” that rolls out. Practically, it’s a kind of office on wheels- a mobile research space - that takes participants to new places, physically and mentally, as the structure rolls down the long runway at the former NATO base outside Utrecht (the Netherlands).
In 2013 brothers Ronald and Erik Rietveld - an architect and philosopher by training -, who operate “at the crossroads of architecture, art and philosophy”, were given the keys to a vacant aircraft shelter. Along with Studio Frank Havermans, they spent the next year and a half creating a structure that would cause visitors to rethink the history of the Cold War air base.
Secret Operation 610 is massive, 4.5-meter-tall (15 feet) beast. Towering above the metal “legs” is a diamond-shaped capsule that serves as an ambulatory think tank for scientists and artists looking to escape conventional boundaries. The space can be customized - a meeting table drops from the ceiling, chairs can be folded out of the floor and walls - and moves along a three-kilometer-long landing strip to assure that views/concepts/reality aren’t taken for granted.
Like so much of RAAAF’s work, Secret Operation 610 is a real-life “thinking model”. For the Rietvelds “every project is a manifesto in itself”. “Vacant NL”, created for the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, “calls upon the Dutch government to make use of the enormous potential of inspiring, unoccupied buildings”; they calculate 10,000 in the Netherlands alone.
“‘The End of Sitting’ is a thinking model that questions our ‘sitting society’” and our reliance on chairs as necessary objects. They explored different standing positions and the possibility of “radical change for the working environment”.

At my age, a working space needs *_a bit more comfort._* Soft Furnishings and a Pantry come to mind. My workshop (woodwork & metalwork) has an office chair, 3 cats and 2 dogs to cuddle when the mood strikes. I can eat in there and make cups of tea or coffee. I'm surrounded by a jungle garden. It all adds to my inspiration.

Visually, the art, the architecture (in the black and white photos), and the vehicle are interesting.
But the hands-down, most useful and most interesting thing overall is the hangar itself, which is drab, concrete, and old. I could spend an entire afternoon walking around that old hangar, looking at the gates and the mechanisms, the lights, the roof, and so on, and I would be a lot happier with that than...
The vehicle. Or the "office spaces." The reason that office spaces feature normal-looking tables and chairs is because they work, and have done for a very long time. I see that office space and think three things immediately. 1) It looks like the movie "Brazil" and is terrifying as a result. 2) It looks like a workplace injury lawsuit just begging to happen, and 3) It looks completely impractical to a normal office worker.
They are trying to sell Kino to people who are required to watch a Mellisa McCarthy flick. So long as they aren't upset at the results, more power to them, but I do not want offices or houses to look like this in the future lol

This is definitely creative. These are ideas I've never heard of before. I really really love some of it, and some of it is interesting, but not something I would want to be exposed to for a long period of time, or responsible for actually doing. But it does inspire me to want to create furniture and useful alternative vehicles too. They would probably be very different in a lot of ways, but I like some of the things that these designers created.

Its even a neat concept of an interior space, if you lost the ridiculous jetsons-esque stilt legs and treads that make the nasa crawler look like an f1 racecar. Put some storage into the bulkheads, maybe a couple bed racks that fold down over the chairs when theyre folded down so its actually habitable, figure out some sort of toilet solution and a way to make a meal and boom. slap that habitat unit on an LMTV or similar vehicle and hit the road.

The impact of environment on creativity cannot be overstated. Everybody is saying this is impractical. This is true, but is practicality the only criteria of a space? This is the case in office cubicles, and walled in conference rooms. Working in a space like this produces inspiration by the kilowatt, and that is why the people who work in it are all working on cutting edge projects. Innovation requires inspiration, and cubicles and practical work spaces have a disparity in this area. Yeah, all the people bitching in the comments would be uncomfortable physically working day after day in this space, operating like a call center. But if you're a creative, this space would be priceless. Now enjoy this for what it is not, which is your practical and mundane work space you prize so highly.
