Underground dome house of the family who led geese to fly home

  • Paula and Bill Lishman spent many winters in a poorly-insulated A-frame cabin before realizing they needed to go underground to use the earth’s energy to stay warm, so they knocked the top off a hill, dropped in ferro-cement domes, and covered it up again with dirt.
    Thanks to skylights cut into every dome and the white-powdered marble that covers the interior, their earth-sheltered home is naturally well-lit despite being below the frost line.
    Fifteen feet below ground, the soil temperature remains about equal to the annual average temperature of the area’s surface air so earth-sheltered homes use sod’s constant temperature to stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
    Bill Lishman believed in rethinking not just the conventional home, but also how we live. He reimagined his home’s refrigerator by building a round appliance that pops up out of the countertop so the heavier cool air stays inside when opened (via compressed air).
    In 1986, Bill Lishman began training Canada Geese to follow his ultralight aircraft and to "teach" the birds migration routes to avoid a threatened extinction. His work on "Operation Migration" brought him popular recognition with the 1996 movie Fly Away Home starring Jeff Daniels.
    Paula Lishman also believes in rethinking convention. In 1979 she began her fashion label reinventing the fur trade by using spun fur to knit her clothing.

Why aren't we all living in houses like that again?

      Maybe because it's a fortune to build and few people have the know how to do it. A dome is not as space efficient as a cube. Footprint is large, so also expensive. Modern architecture often uses a roof as a garden, but it's still not affoardable.

    • @foodforestfolderol
      @foodforestfolderol Před 3 lety +135

      A couple of reasons. First, they built it themselves. To get a construction company to do something like this would be enormously expensive. 2nd, it doesn't fit modern codes. Trying to get a government to agree with something like this would be almost impossible. People who try things outside the "norm" have a huge disadvantage. One of the biggest problems is that the .gov wants engineers to sign off on anything that doesn't fit current code (massive expense) and insurance companies won't insure it.

    • @Tu-Liki
      @Tu-Liki Před 3 lety +106

      Why aren't we building like this today? There are two answers to that - a short one and a long one! Short one is "we used to" but the long one is too complex for this space so I'm currently writing a book about! To elaborate even a short answer: a couple of centuries ago, when we were in principle building same way as we are today still, a common man, a farmer or a tradesman, typically without much education to speak of but armored with knowledge and wisdom inherited from forebears KNEW BETTER than we are today, took advantage of cardinal orientation, local materials, natural principles and wasted nothing!
      Today we are placing houses parallel to adjacent roads (which some senseless art-college graduate slash county council planning department employee scribbled on "general" plan at first place), building clusters of completely pointless, short-lived sleeping quarters while ruthlessly ignoring Solar gain via Cardinal alignment to South, natural light, Summer and Winter Arc, heat loss, Solar shading etc. but also the importance of Organic Social Environment, Working Full Loop Infrastructure, Circular Economy etc. etc. the sum of which can be only described as >>Total Ignorance of Nature, Environment, Social Structure, Future of this Planet and ALL of its inhabitants" derived by our long cultivated arrogance as a "rulers of the world and nature" that we have acquired though our schooling since second half of 19th century!
      What has to happen' is the entire Paradigm Shift from "ruling race" attempting to control and govern Nature and to become "Conscientious Custodians" of that incredible Space Ship of ours called Planet Earth with all its inhabitants and organic structures, to grow out of our infancy as human race and start behaving and acting AT LEAST as adolescents with potential to grow up and reach certain meaningful maturity one day!
      So far - standing by!

Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats--the hobbit was fond of visitors. The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill--The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it--and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. No going upstairs for the hobbit: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes (he had whole rooms devoted to clothes), kitchens, dining-rooms, all were on the same floor, and indeed on the same passage. The best rooms were all on the lefthand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river."

      @Respectable Man The example you came up with has nothing to do with what I said. You have to understand the context first before you can respond to it. The exact quote at 1:00 from the woman was "we call it earth-integrated rather than underground because underground connotes dark and no light." She isn't telling you to call it earth-integrated she is just saying she and her family calls it earth-integrated. When I think of an underground house I think of an underground bunker, shipping container home fully underground, or something else along those lines. I don't think of a house that is partially underground at 14 inches and a layer of soil above it. Language was meant to communicate something as accurately and as concisely as possible. Phones, tablets, and laptops are all technically computers but we call them different names so we don't have as much of a chance to miss communicate. She calls her house earth-integrated so people - and that includes contractors - don't immediately think her house is fully underground.
