Man wakes up from coma after 3 years - first thought, must play ST games. Welcome back.
My exact thought :) Laying there in coma bed, children and wife around.. fingers twitch, REM increases, hand flops, reaeching.. ever close.. to wife? no, to a joystick!
“What’s he saying?”
“…..mmm kkk plsssss…”
“Mum and kids?”
“…no….. IK Plus… I need to play IK Plus…”
@@thejoyofsticks IK+ ... now _there_ was a game :) IIRC, that was the one where you coudl even pull the pants down on the other characters ... I could've been smart, but my head is full of _that_ from the 80s :)
Yes! Press T for trousers! Comedy gold that.
“Could have been smart” made me snort my tea. If only I had spent those thousands of hours studying particle physics instead of ST games. I’d have been where Brian Cox is now.
@@skeezixcodejedi Tut tut, the better IK is the one without the plus! ;)
I was just thinking the other day how I hadn't seen you around for a while (3 years, it seems!) and then you not only turn up in my video comments, you also put out a new video. Welcome back, sir, good to see you! :)
Also, I always really liked this game.
I’m like Candyman or something. Think of me and I shall return… woooOOOoooohh! :D To be honest your videos provided a lot of the inspiration for me wanting to make my own videos again, so thank you.
Haha alright mate. Not seen this game in years. The music, the sound of crushing the cans and the huffing and puffing is what I remember the most.
Hello, hello! It's funny the things that stick in our memory, isn't it? I think the bleedin' rat will be the thing that sticks in my memory the longest! :D
Saw a vid for Cruise for a corpse recently, a game I never had but wanted.
Welcome back Marc! For some reason, after I'd completely forgot about your channel, I decided to check to see if you'd uploaded anything new only to find you'd uploaded this just yesterday! Spooky! Must be the call of the ST.
You must have a sixth sense for ST content, Morph! :D Just remember to only use your powers for good, now.
Welcome back. And with a classic as well. I love the charm of these early ST games.
Like I said in the video, I’d played it before, so I knew it was decent, but I will still suprised by just how good it is. Definitely one of the better arcade conversions on the ST.
So nice to see you back, Marc! I noticed your video in my feed today and thought wow, how long has it been....so I checked your channel and discovered that you'd previously uploaded both this and another over the course of the last couple of weeks. Cheers CZcams, I didn't see these! I'll sit down over the next couple of days and give them a watch. Welcome back old friend!
Cheers, Alex! Good to be back. Yes, I think the algorithm is punishing me for not uploading for years by not putting my videos on people's feeds. The numbers are way down from what I used to get. I don't mind too much though, as I'm still getting lots of nice comments.
Welcome back to the tubes, Marc! 😃 This one was one of my earliest ST favourites back in the day! A lot of fun, but it does get pretty damn tricky after a couple of levels! I had the same graphical glitch as you, when I made my Metro Cross video. Really nice jump pad streak BTW! 😁
I couldn’t believe that streak! Makes me want to memorise that level so I can hit every jump. The adrenaline rush! :D I’m guessing we used the same crack. I wonder if Klaz’s version fixes it (they usually do, he’s a wizard).
@@thejoyofsticks I found it really tricky nailing those pad jumps in the ST version, But it's oh so satisfying when it works! 😄 Yeah, I probably used the Klaz version too, but my glitches were far worse.
Great to see you back! I used to have 2 player competitions on this with my mates. It was always good for a quick blast. Haven't seen a trained version yet, it'd be good to see all the levels. Dont leave it so long next time!
Cheers, Bobby! Good to be back. Yes, it seems like the ideal game to do a bit of score attack with. New video coming tomorrow!
In the sequel to this game, you try to open all the Coke cans without receiving a face full of fizz.
You already seem to have cultivated a nice litany of welcome back message, so I'll just say this: You're late! Get back to work! I'm docking you three years' wages.
3 Years! But that’s sixpence! What will I tells the wife?
Great to have you back, been missing your videos :) Early 16bit Probe stuff is very well programmed indeed.
Yes! What a great team. Solid coding, interesting concepts. Thanks for the kind words!
WTF! Who is this?
Welcome back!
My RAM isn't as great as it used to be, I think I used to play this in the arcades, but I am pretty sure I also played it on a friends' CPC. I definitely also played it on the ST and it's one of those games I wish I was better but I know I never will be. It's definitely one of the better arcade ports on the ST. IIRC it is also playable on high resolution. IF I remember it correctly.
It's one of those games that my guess is if you see someone who is very very good at it, it will look like a dream.
Seeing how you play, I think you are about 10 games before you get very good at it. :)
A reviewer found it too easy...I call BS on his claim lol.
Oh, that Phantasie photo!
Great to see you back! I hope you are back for good!
Hey, what’s a few corrupted bits here and there? :D
What was the CPC version like? Was it a clone of the Speccy version? Or was a little more effort put in? Mind you, I can imagine a higher res, faster scrolling version being better. I have a fancy for playing some high resolution games, no idea why. I know a lot of the LucasArts adventures work in high rez and there’s Bolo, which is a cracking game.
10 games, hey? I’ll take that as a compliment. I do want to return to it to see if I can improve, but I think I’m pretty close to my ceiling already. The reflexes ain’t what they used to be.
More vids to come, don’t worry about that, our kid!
@@thejoyofsticks I don't remember details, but I do remember finding it very difficult. Talking about the CPC version.
Yes I stand by what I said, I do believe in about 10 games you will be rocking this game, perhaps even complete a full run.
Looking forward to more videos. Welcome back. :)
Your belief in my ability is lovely. Completely misplaced, but lovely.
Thanks, again some of my childhood evenings, that i forgot !!
Thanks for watching! I’m always glad to bring back happy memories.
@@thejoyofsticks nice touch to get retro reviews in french for me, gen4, joystick, tilt...
@@jul16ares You are most welcome. It seems that you had some great publications over in France. Often, if I'm struggling to find reviews in the UK mags, I'll find a couple in the French ones.
Hey mate! Great to see a new video, and I saw your reply to me yesterday, thanks for that, all good here! I actually played Metro-cross a lot on the Speccy, it was a fairly decent conversion, never played the ST one, but I like the look of it. Great to see you!
Cheers, Phil! Thanks for the kind words. I’m going to have a look at the other conversions. A few people have praised the Speccy version!
Holy shit man, you're back!! Now I can finally get my dose of Atari ST gaming again
:D Thanks, man.
Great to see you back and keeping the ST alive :)
Thank for the kind words, chap!
🎉Great to see you back with a new video. I played this on the Amstrad and really liked it. I’ve always been interested in the ST version because there was no Amiga release, like a few those early US gold arcade ports (Xevious, Gauntlet, Solomon’s Key, Road Runner etc). Both CPC and ST have that same fantastic music. The box art on the NTSC release is probably the most hilariously bad I have ever seen, full stop!
Somebody mentioned that there has been a recent conversion of this to the Amiga, so even Miggy heads (that’s what they call them, right?) can enjoy it too! Lots of people enjoying that US box art. Every time I see it, I think it’s Tony Hawk. It’s not though, right?
Hell yeah, great to see you back, even if it's just a one off.
Watch this space, my friend! :D
Great to see you back!! Never heard of this one, have to try it some time!
Thanks, kidda! You should give this one a whirl. Cracking little arcade romp.
Great to see you back, it's always a treat! Metrocross is a fun game, I was introduced to it on a friend's C64 back in the day. The ST version scrolls very well!
Thanks, buddy! The reviewer said the C64 version is terrible. Was he correct?
I can't remember to be honest. The music was pretty good, but I relent much more vividly playing California and Winter Games on that C64, do... Not that memorable I guess?
California Games! Great stuff! I’ve done a video of that for the channel, right? It’s been so long now that I’ve completely forgotten what games we’ve covered. Someone fire up Excel quick!
Found it! California Games (Atari ST)

Hi Marc, great to see new videos from you again 👍🕹️
Hope that you are back for the future 😎
Really like your style of presenting, it's great to have an honest opinion about these games and their playability 🎮
Thanks for the kind words, Byron. No plans to stop making videos yet! 👍 I've got a half day coming up thanks to my school being a polling station, so I'll have the house to myself for a bit and can record some more.
The joy of the joy of sticks! Now the kids are a bit older there’s no whispering required to the commentary either!
Heh! Everyone was out, so no need for accidental ASMR in this one! XD
Great to see you back @Stickhead 💯👍👍

Great to see you back making videos!
Cheers, bab!
Woohoo! Nice to see that green desktop again!
I'm not used to seeing sidescrolling that smooth on the ST but I know there were some games that did a good job of it without an STE.
Yes! These smooth horizontal scrolling Atari ST games are treasures and should be protected at all costs. Next vid: Top Ten Smooth Horizontal Scrolling Atari ST Games. Thanks for the kind words, mate!
Welcome back
Thank you! Good to be back!
Yehhh his back in town! Welcome back sir.

The first is compulsory, latter is optional. Growing up is for grown-ups, our kid.
Yay! So glad to see that you are alive!
Still going! :D
He's back! \o/
And with Metro-Cross on top of that!
A really cool game. A pleasant surprise!
@@thejoyofsticks The scroll was so smooth, it was technically great for its time, I did not realize it back then
We ST fans must treasure smooth horizontal scrolling wherever we find it. 🙏
great to have Stickhead back!!!
🫡
Wow long time no see, all the best to you from us in Norway!
Cheers buddy! Good to be back. How's things?
Very hard game, but plays very well. Loved this game on the ST. @5:53 you can get rid of the cat by touching the trap square and being thrown into the air. @6:56 @13:37 level looks corrupted, it's not supposed to look like that. This is a game that you only master through memorization of the levels.
I’m not a fan of games that rely heavily on memory (because mine is terrible) :D Thanks for the tip. I’ll remember that for my next play. Yes, I thought those graphics looked a bit dodgy. I’m going to give Klaz’s version a look. I imagine that one will be fine. The man’s an absolute wizard.
Good to see you back.

What a great surprise. Welcome back Marc! You are a great Metrocrosser. Level 5 on the first try. Hope to see more stickhead from now on.
...And best voice on CZcams ❤
Is level 5 good?! Or are you just being kind? :D Thanks for the kind words, our kid.
@@thejoyofsticks I think it is pretty good, especially for a first try! But I am also a friendly bloke ofcourse ;)
Nope, sorry, best voice is to be found @RetroRecipes ;-)
@@ataristsnacks that is also an incredible sooting voice indeed. I am also a fan. But Marc is cooler, because he is an Atari ST freak. So he will always win in my book ;-)
Yes! Mine is a ‘natter down the pub with your mate’ voice, whereas his is a ‘whisper sweet nothings in your ear voice’. No contest.
You're back! This quite a nice early port!
It is! Makes me want to dive into som more Probe games. It’s been ages since I played Verminator.
Where have you been 😊 hope all is well so great to see you back.
I’ve been here, where have you been? :D Everything’s good, just been having a CZcams break. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that!
@@thejoyofsticks I've been waiting for more joy of sticks goodness 😂
Welcome back again Marc. It's great so recieve a new video in your channel! I played this game a lot, thousands of hours of fun with this particular challenge. I didn't know it was an arcade conversion until a few years ago 😅
By the way, I left you a comment in GoG channel regarding my reviews, I tryed two times but the comment disapeared, maybe I can't put a link to another website...
Bless you. Thank you for the kind words. Hmm… I haven’t deliberately forbidden links so it must be automatic. You can send me a link via email if you like: stickhead@blueyonder.co.uk
Any top tips to improve my gameplay?
@@thejoyofsticks oh, Ok tomorrow I will send you the link by email 😉.
Tips for Metro-Cross: when you have the damn cat over you, try to crash some object, the cat will disapear. When you go on skate and you can’t avoid an object, you don’t have mecessarily to crash it, you can jump by pressing fire (well, you will loose the skate, but you won’t crash and will keep on running).
@@JoanOrfila Great tips. Thanks for those!
Great to see you back! GOAL IN!
I love the pose he strikes on the skateboard.
So is this a one off or can we expect more from our Atari ST gaming channel?
GOAL IN!
Well, I plan to do more, but I didn’t plan to fall off the face of the Earth for 3 years, so…
I only noticed the skateboard pose arm wiggles during editing. This is how I will always ride a skateboard from now on.
Great to see you back once more.
I remember this game on the 8-bits, I may have played the Spectrum version, had no idea it had come to the 16 bit computers. This is one of the reasons I like this channel so much, you often show games I had no idea got released for the ST .
Thanks for the kind words! Happy to help. A lot of people are saying the Speccy version was good. I might need to check one of those comparison videos.
Blimey, he’s back! ❤
👋
Welcome back! I bought this on budget for the C64 back in the day. It's not as bad as that review suggests. It just looked a bit drab but plays pretty similar to the ST version. It's not an amazing game but it was good fun to play every now and then.
Cheers, fella! Thanks for watching!
OK. I need to watch one of those comparison review videos. Some have said the Speccy version is good too.
Let's see. Ah, there it is. Press the power button on the ol' computer. Wait a moment or two for it to load up.. Open Firefox. Take a WHAT IS THIS? The man with the golden haircut is back!

Wow!!! You are back! So great to see a new video! I think that means I have to get into gear an create a new game? ... But until then you can still try out my latest in case you missed it. 😃
Hey Thomas, great to hear from you! I didn’t realise that I’d missed an AnarchoSoft classic! I’ll have to check it out as soon as possible! And yes, you DO need to get working on the next masterpiece! :D

no way.. great to see you back.. :)

It's really nice to see you back on the CZcams wagon, Marc 👍 I always enjoyed your review videos etc... so it's great you've returned to look at this old school classic. I remember really liking the decent port of Metro-Cross for the Amstrad. This ST version is pretty good, despite the sprites being a bit puny looking. The fact that it runs and plays smoothly is a major plus point. I hope to see loads more videos from you over the coming months. Cheers! 🍻
Thank for the kind words! It’s definitely those kind of comments that keeps me coming back, so it’s really appreciated. The Amstrad version is a looker, but typically for the CPC in that high colour mode, doesn’t scroll very smoothly. I guess it’s the gameplay that really counts, though. One of the magazines said that the sprites were a bit small and it was only when comparing side by side with other versions that I realised just how much they had scaled them down. To be honest, I wish more ST arcade conversions did the same. I would much rather have smoother gameplay than bigger sprites to draw and mask.
The joy of the joyofsticks is back 😊
Heh! Bringing some joy is all I’ve ever wanted to do with the channel, chap.
I thought you gave up on your channel, great to see you back.
You can never keep a CZcamsr down, Colin! We’ll pop back up and demand your likes and subscriptions at the drop of a hat. Thanks for the kind words!
There are countless channels I was subbed to and forgotten about over the years, but there are a few that I do think about quite often and this is one of them!
Cheers, bab. That’s lovely to hear.
Bloody 'ell. I'm guessing the Easter hols freed up some time for you to get your ST on. Good to see you mate.
It’s what Jesus would have wanted, mate. When’s your triumphant return? 😉
Wow, great to see you back! Thought about this game just the other day - there's a port of the ST version to the Amiga that I wanted to check out. Such a great game =D
Thanks! It’s great to be back! I’m very impressed with the recent Amiga ports of ST games. It’s great to see new developments on old machines and these top games deserve a new audience. Even if it’s Amiga fans.
Haven't seen this intro in a while...
Look people, Marc is here! He lives again! How are you doing these days?
Metro Cross was one of the first computer games that I played, although that was on ZX Spectrum around 1993.
I’m good, thanks for asking! How’s you?
What was the Speccy version like?
@@thejoyofsticks I'm making Pico-8 game "reviews" these days. ZX Spectrum version had less advanced graphics, but gameplay-wise it was not any worse than what I see here. Breathing animation after finishing the level was more primitive, so 30 years back I had no idea what that 1 frame of appearing and disappearing "speech bubble" was supposed to represent :)
Ooh Pico8! Fascinating platform. I’ve seen some great demoscene type productions on that.
How am I not subscribed to your channel? Ridiculous. Rectified. Watching some Pico stuff now! 👍
@@thejoyofsticks thanks!
Fun little game. I could never figure out how to ditch the rats other than running into a trap, even after hours of playing it, and you figured it out within seconds 😂. Good to have you back!
Waggling definitely gets them off quicker, but someone else suggested running into a trap too. I wondered if a springboard would get the bugger off, but didn’t get the chance to test that theory.
So yeah I remember this well ,not sure I brought it tho ..maybe a copy ,but can remember playing and getting good at it ,so frustrating at times but a fun and rewarding game ...graphics were plain but as they say in the reviews the game play is what it's all about ..great review mate 👍
A copy?! You weren’t a… (dun dun dunnnn) pirate? :D
Yes, it does seem rewarding. I definitely plan to come back to it and see if I can improve. It definitely helps when you don’t have to talk to the audience!
@thejoyofsticks erm no pirates here ..spits to the ground ! Lol ...looking forward to the next video mate 👍...I recon uve got the buzz back now
XD Is that a peg leg under your trouser leg? Can I hear squawking? What’s that smell of rum.
No judgement here, I was replying to a comment yesterday of someone talking about Lure of the Temptress and the first thing I though was “I actually bought that one with money” 🤣 I ordered it from NRG or something like that. Same time I ordered Sensible World of Soccer, which never came to be. (remember, kids: don’t pre-order)
@thejoyofsticks although I had about 100 games which were copy's...I did prefer to buy them ,box art was great, and the propa manual was a dream 😆....
Ha ha welcome back!!! 🙏
Thanks, bab!
Omg ur back lol ..was only watching some videos yesterday nursing a hangover 🙃...I'll watch this later as I'm at work 😅...hope ur well since u was last on, blues have brought up half of Birmingham...the sleeping giant is awake marc...get urself down there again, and put some sensible soccer games on the go ...Birmingham vrs marselle..😂
Nice to know my videos are a salve for hangovers. Maybe avoid the Llamatron one, the flashing lights will cause a whiteout for sure. I am well, thanks for asking. Feels great to put a video out after so long. How are things with you?
As for the Blues, God love ‘em, I’m not convinced we’ll avoid relegation. I think I might buy another season ticket if we go down. That’s what I did last time we dropped into the third tier and bloody loved it, bought one for the next ten years or so!
16:01 £25 in 1987 is equivalent to £70 in today's money. Looks like a good game.
Good stuff. :)
Blimey! That is expensive! :D Again, a great little game for a quick blast these days, but I’m not sure how I would feel paying two months’ pocket money for it.
Whoa! It’s you 😂
Whoa! It’s me! 😂 Thanks for watching, chap!
Oh... i was just uploading my first video in 4 years and then i see your video pop up on the start page and i first thought it was one of your older videos that got bumped by some algorithm sensing i was uploading an Atari ST video (done using an ST emulator though😅) but to my surprise it was a new one👍 I remember Metrocross had some smooth scrolling for an ST game and i might guess that the graphics glitch was caused by the fact you were playing it on an STE. Have you seen the box art for the USA release? it shows a photo of Tony Hawk on a skateboard :)
I thought it was just someone who looked like Tony Hawk! It was THE Tony Hawk? How ridiculous. How did they get him to do it? I guess it’s a ‘before he was famous’ kind of thing.
Great to hear that you are uploading again too! 👍
@@thejoyofsticksactually i think my sources about it being Tony Hawk is wrong.. did some closer inspection and the metro cross guy is too different😅
I hope you continue uploading more great ST videos👍☺️
I’ve just had another look at the box art and it REALLY does look like him! :D So much so that I had to Google it. The only search results combining Metro-Cross with his name are people saying things like:
“Me: Can we get Tony Hawk?
Mum: No, we have Tony Hawk at home.
Tony Hawk at home:”
And the rather hilarious comment “Tony Dork Pro Skater”
Great to see you back!! (Never liked this game lol)
:D I can see why it might niggle some people, for sure! Thanks for the kind words!

@@thejoyofsticks how rude! ;P
OMG \o/
Right? \o/
I do believe you were suffering some kind of graphical glitch. I've played this game many times in my youth and I never came across these bugs and I did get somewhat far in the game.
I think it must have been the cracked version I was using. I should have stuck to Klaz’s version.
I had this for my Amstrad CPC back in the 80s, great conversion. Also there were spin-off clones like Ninja Scooter Simulator czcams.com/video/m1L0CW1qX0A/video.html
Ninja Scooter Simulator looks pretty good! Thanks for the tip.
@@thejoyofsticks I think it is maybe the better version too, has all the original features. The music is excellent.
Great game, but with one of (if not THE) absolute worst box covers of all time! (US release only, thankfully.)
Ha ha! Is that the one with Tony Hawk’s goofy step-cousin on the cover? The UK one is one of those where the illustration is great, but has very little connection with the game at all.
Good to see new content from you! Seeing your vids partly inspired me to start my channel which is more Atari 8 bit related but some ST stuff also. czcams.com/channels/10w6ZkuiJCk_iAAuX48MeQ.html . Keep up the good work!
It's so great to hear that my nonsense has partly inspired you to start a channel! Honestly, I'm chuffed to death about that. Watching Steve Benway way back in the early CZcams days is what inspired me to make some videos, so the cycle continues! :D
You have a new subscriber, sir! Looking forward to watching some vids.
@thejoyofsticks wow, many thanks. Have a little catching up to do though I feel !
@thejoyofsticks By the way. Any idea how to get the Metrocross theme out of my head as it's living there rent free at the moment!
I would recommend playing a couple of rounds of Bubble Bobble. That'll get the Metro-Cross theme right out of there!
