Hey, thanks for the feedback! It's a program on the ST called STSpeech. It was so cool when we discovered it back in the day. Can you imagine how many swear words got typed into that poor little program? :D
Love Do! Run Run, used to play it a ton in MAME. This ST version looks super solid! Would have loved this back in the 90s.

@@thejoyofsticks It was rather a long time ago, so don't really remember, sadly! But I do remember that it was tricky and it was mostly my greed that got me killed! :D

Seems like a pretty good conversion. I think it would take some dedication to master, though.
Had me at "Red Warrior has reflective shot!" ... what a dubious Gauntlet power up, which would lead to waiting around for your shot to stop, and accidentally shooting the food and stuff ...
Ha ha! Those Gauntlet quotes are etched in my memory for always. I always dreaded the "Blue Wizard is it!" one where the baddies would only attack you. My and my cousin would waste so much time and energy playing tag with each other for the next 10 minutes! :D

@@bazza5699 The first German review mentions a price of 70 DM, which is a lot more than that - pretty much full price, back in those days. Could have just been an estimate/guess of theirs though....
Saw the adverts for this and wanted it, soo badly, as i loved Mr Do! on the A8 and C64.
This doesn't look or sound anything like as much fun as that 😭
Yes. Lots of people saying that they tried to add to many features to this sequel and lost the essence that made the original so playable. A shame!
I thought you were showing an Arcade game not an ST game, this is brilliant!
I'm not very familiar with the arcade, but it seems like a good conversion.
@@thejoyofsticks I don't know of one either, but I meant the quality of the graphics and animation are very good and I actually though you were showing an arcade machine then you were going to show the ST version, but it was the ST version the whole way through! =)

A questionable attempt at facial hair but it's for a great cause and your numbers are on track. It's so important for men to seek help and also to reach out to your mates and ask if they're really doing OK.
As for the game, I love Mr Do, possibly due to its closeness to Dig Dug in gameplay, but I don't think Universal hit those heights again with the rest of the series. If any of you out there had cable TV in the late 80s/early 90s and had a Videotron set top box, I wonder if you remember Digger, their version of Mr Do.
XD I know, I know. C- must do better. Let's see what it looks like at the end of the month, eh?
A few people have said they prefer the purer gameplay of the original Mr Do. I like what they tried to do here, by combining elements of lots of different popular arcades, but maybe there is one too many ideas here.
I have no idea about that set top box, but I am certainly intrigued!
I knew of the Commodore 64 version, but not the Atari ST version. I played this in real life and loved it. MAME does a VERY good job of emulating it. Do! Run Run was the fourth and FINAL version of the Mr. Do! series. The Neo Geo version, Neo Mr. DO!, did NOT do the series justice. As for game play, the rollers are the main thing you want to use. Lure as many as you can to them.
Thanks for the tips Wil! I'll definitely try to implement those next time I play. Lots of people seem to think that the original (Mr Do) on the arcade is a lot better than the original. I guess you don't agree?
@@thejoyofsticks The original Mr. Do! was great, I prefer Do! Run Run over the other three, Mr. Do!, Mr. Do!'s Castle and Do!'s Wild Ride.
Another great video from Mr McStickhead. The game, however, isn't on my must-play list. In fact, I somewhat detested it as a kid. The enemies are too fast to make it enjoyable. Also, did you play Q in Skyfall?
No, I played bass in The Fall.
Yes, it is just a /touch/ too hard. I went back and played a little more after the video and it was a slog to get any further into the game. Things just feel a bit stacked against you. Like I said in the video, if the power ball was a little more powerful, or the enemies movements a little less effective (at least at the beginning) it would feel more rewarding.

Add me to the "I didn't know this got a port" camp. I'm genuinely more familiar with both the original and Mr. Do's Castle, and I've seen the name, but not tried this at all. Looks like a fairly solid port, released at a weird time, of a game which can't help but feel is a lesser sequel thanks to some of the mechanics. Probably why it doesn't quite get the love the original or even Mr. Do's Castle get.
So perhaps it makes sense those publications rubbished it, but quite an odd release. Time Soldiers is probably a little more era appropriate though - though they kind of messed it up mechanically in the conversion.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the video, but it seems strange that such a big company like Electrocoin had so few games released. I'm guessing it's because they wanted to test the waters in this new market by buying up a couple of cheap licenses, but ultimately decided it wasn't for them.
I get a kick out of older arcade games that got a port to the ST, but it seems like the gaming press of the time certainly didn't. I can see what you are saying about the extraneous mechanics in this game, I would have liked to try an ST port of the original Mr Do! by the same team. We did eventually get a port of Dig Dug in 1998 thanks to the Resevoir Gods. I might give that a go soon!
Maybe it's just me, but it would've been cute to sneak in a few notes from the Do Ron Ron into the music.

It seems the game posits the idea there is a ladder of fruit evolution. Apples into limes, and so on. I wonder what the ultimate evolution of fruit is... Perhaps the legendary OMEGAPPLE!
Don't Run Run is pretty much how I'm feeling right now. My right calf is burning and I need to do another 5k this weekend! :D
I think they got it all wrong in this game. How is an apple better than a cherry? How is a lime better than an apple? What madness is this? And everyone knows that the inselberg of the fruit bowl is the banana, surely? Taito clearly didn't understand this as its the lowest scoring fruit in Bubble Bobble. Morons.
I never seen the ST version of this, perhaps...memory isn't what it used to be.
I was never a fan of the game, though I did like the original Mr Do a lot.
One of the first games I remember playing on computers.
Shame the ST never got a port of Mr Do! but we did get a version of Dig Dug (a game which lives in the same compartment of my brain for some reason) thanks to the Reservoir Gods in 1998.
@@thejoyofsticks I don't know what Rservoir Gods is, but I have never watched Reservoir Dogs, Titanic, Pulp Fiction.
I can sort of see the criticism to porting a game like Do! Run Run at that point in time,, it doesn't seem like a spectacular port either. I guess someone really wanted the game for the ST, and it does look quite fun That "selection"-mechanic reminds me of a game I had for the ST where you had to reveal an image by cutting out pieces while avoiding enemies, similiar to this game. Enjoyed that game quite a bit, wish I could remember its name :)
I'm guessing Electrocoin were testing the waters, doing their toes in by buying the cheap licenses to some old but decent arcade games.
I think the game you might be talking about is Volfied, which is a sequel to Qix. There are some other games with that mechanic though.
@@thejoyofsticks ah, thanks buddy! I'm pretty sure it was Qix I had in mind since Volfied looks too fancy. There doesn't seem to have been a Qix-port on the ST though, so I wonder if it's just my memory failing me and I played it on a different platform.

Volfied *is* fancy. It has powerups and enemies and posh sound effects and everything. It's a bit of an underrated gem to be honest.

Lovely music by Wally Beben in this but I never took the time to dig the gameplay.
:O I didn't realise this was Wally's work! No wonder the music is so good. It doesn't seem to quite fit the gameplay though. I would have expected some circus music or something jaunty and jolly.

Loved the arcade game back in the days. The ST version seems ok and playable but it's also a lazy port. They could have done better.
The sequel didn't feel like mr. do anymore. Not a great arcade game. And few ports are better than the original game they are ported from.
I think maybe Mr Do! is a little purer? Like they tried to add a little too many mechanics to this version?
@@thejoyofsticks the added mechanics make this sequel a lesser game compared to the original. there's no good reason to add the pseudo 3-d levels. the log traps are harder to leverage and less satisfying than the apples. the whole drawing loops around areas simply isn't worth the time expended doing it - if you got powerups it would have been worth it. there was a certain charm to the original game, that seems completely lost here.
