    I'm waiting for the disc version of these wheels, and I was a bit apprehensive since I couldn't find any decent reviews. Thanks, it was very insightful. Can't wait to ride them :)

    Great review, I've just got them came standard on my tcr adv. sl 2. Running tubeless at the moment. Loving it. Though mine was not completely true on the rear wheel, even though brand new from shop, slightly off by 0.5mm. Not enough to worry about.

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      Mine were slightly out too. I did not worry about it, then on one ride, they completely let go and went so out of true i had to abandon the ride!

    Thanks for the review. Could you tell me how these wheels perform in terms of braking ? I live in Nice, so lots of long descents.

    @shawnalexander1305 Před 5 lety

    So these adapters make the wheels standard QR. Giant lists the size as 100x5mm and 130x5mm. Is that not the same as the 100x9mm type?

    I have a TCR Advanced pro1 with the same wheelset have done less then 2500k on them and I had to replace the 2 spokes already one front one on the back.

      Sam Shamsuldini, where did you source spokes for these wheels? I am having a tough time finding them for mine.

    I just bought a pair of these on craigslist for $200. Replacing my mavic askiums on my CAAD 12 (:

    I've got a TCR Advanced with Giant SLR1 wheels since 2 months. I'm not that happy about the wheels smoothness. Sometimes they seem not to roll at all. I've done 600 km at the moment. Owners: what are your impressions about that?

    • @chrisprotzman6637
      @chrisprotzman6637 Před 6 lety +2

      Paolo Merlino I have the 2018 updated wheel-set. I have not have had any problems with them I find them to work fine and plenty stiff

  • @ur2eta
    @ur2eta Před 5 lety +2

    I've broken 3 spokes of these wheels this year. Nothing more to add...

    • @paolomerlino1447
      @paolomerlino1447 Před 5 lety

      Same happened to me. Twice in 3 months. Brought them back to the dealer, as they still were under warranty. Giant promised me to substitute them, but still waiting for them for 2 months... Fortunately I have another pair of wheels.

  • @rzftt4
    @rzftt4 Před 4 lety +2

    I suppose I should just be satisfied with the fact I got 10,000 KM's (3 years of use) out of my SLR 1's but the the rear hub needs replacement parts and bikes shops and Giant themselves have all told me there is no way to rebuild the hub. Giant does not sell the parts. So...there is that...

    • @rzftt4
      @rzftt4 Před 4 lety +2

      Actually I got 16,000 KM's out of them (10,000 miles)...

  • @Mububban23

    How do these go on long descents? I'm looking for a lightweight hill climbing bike, and what goes up must come down. Although I'm lightweight and a cautious descender, I'm a bit nervous about heat buildup on carbon rims. Or is that a thing of the past?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety +2

      Unless you're braking down steeps of 10% for prolonged periods of time in 30deg C + conditions, I wouldn't worry. And yes, the lighter you are the better. Giant are a reputable company in composites and Taiwan has some huge descents. Go for it.

    • @Mububban23
      @Mububban23 Před 6 lety

      Haha, where I live, the main hill is about that gradient, and summer gets to be 40+ C. But thanks for the info.
      I'm going to try and test ride the Advanced Pro 1 Disc, and get a weight and see how those wheels feel. 2018 disc frames all seem to be much closer to their rim brake counterparts than previous model years, across all manufacturers.

      @Mxrobius Před 6 lety

      These are probably best carbon clinchers for long descents. www.roadbikereview.com/reviews/2016-giant-wheelsystems-and-saddle-line-up-unveiled

    have you experienced the cassette biting into the freehub body at all?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety +2

      Sean Bennett to some extent yes. Will be worse if you climb a lot because there is more torque in the large cogs. Torque it down really hard at least 40Nm

  • @pbt2005
    @pbt2005 Před 6 lety

    I am a big fan of these wheels. Giant got something very right with the 1 and 0's. I note they are launching a 42mm set for 2018. Very tempting. I do like how they ride on my TCR SL and I sometimes pair them with my Dogma which is not as capable climbing than the TCR. The only thing I would change is could be marginally wider. I run mine with Corsa G+ and they look great, ride even better. Great review.

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      I have not seen the 42s. Will take a look.

    • @pbt2005
      @pbt2005 Před 6 lety

      Cool. A question. What are your thoughts on Chris King 45 hubs ? A friend has offered me his Zipp 303's shod on KIng 45's and rebuilt with Sapim cxray for a great price, but not sure that they will ride much different to these. I am not a wheel expert, but am aware of differences. 45 should be marginally faster than a 30mm rim ? Thanks in advance.

    • @Mububban23
      @Mububban23 Před 6 lety

      How do these rims go on long descents? I've never had carbon rim brake wheels but am looking very closely at these on the TCR Advanced Pro 1 (2018)

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      Mububban23 worked fine with me on long descents but a bit grabby/ not consistent. Astounding value on that bike though my next bike will have discs.

    • @tomrob36
      @tomrob36 Před 6 lety

      I have had my wheels for over two years first on a 16 TCR frame and now on the 17 Propel frame. The braking has gotten better with more miles and on the stiffer Propel frame I think that adds to the braking. I am a bigger guy at 210 pounds in Massachusetts. I may look into the new 42mm wheels.

  • @jarrahfitzgerald2752
    @jarrahfitzgerald2752 Před 6 lety

    Was there a specific reason behind SRAM Red brakes mixed with Ultegra groupset? Or just a Frankenbike?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety +3

      They're light, and I found them cheap and new on Ebay. Work fine will Ultegra levers. The best thing about them is that they float on a spring at the mounting bolt, which means if there is any brake rub due to wheel flex, the caliper and wheel can move together and won't cause a lot of resistance. Unfortunately this also means you need a 13mm (i think) spanner to center them and can't just turn em by hand like you can with Shimano.

  • @G5performance
    @G5performance Před 6 lety +4

    How come Giant still using 23mm external and 17mm internal carbon clincher/tubeless ready rim in 2018, time to step up Giant

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      G5performance because essentially this TCR was released at the end of 2015 (TCR my16) which means development and molds being opened circa 2014. And by this time, people weren't really bumming the wider rim craze yet. Next gen will likely be wider. Cheers

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety +2

      Dorsey Kindler Hi Dorsey these ones are continental Grand Prix 25mm. Bit cheaper than gp4000s and harder compound so last a bit longer. Ideal for dry smooth roads. Measure a bit narrower than a 25mm gp4000s

    Are these the same wheels on the 2018 TCR Advanced Pro? Thinking of getting either a TCR Advanced or the Pro version but still thinking if the additional $$$ for the Pro is worth it for a full carbon fork, lighter components and the SLR 1 wheelset or just get the TCR Advanced and get a nice carbon wheelset. Thoughts?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      Niko yes sir. Same moulds. Get the pro in my opinion. Lighter fork, and a top end wheelset worth around 1000usd.

    • @nikoooooooooooo
      @nikoooooooooooo Před 6 lety

      Cycgnr thanks for the advice! Would it be wise to also get a pair of alloy wheels for normal training days or do these SLR 1 wheels last long?

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety

      Niko i got some cheap alloy wheels to use on rough roads in Asia but actually wish i was using the Carbon ones more. If it's always dry then stick with the carbon ones!

  • @kay19833

    You wanna tell me dt hub is just a marketting gimmick and that we are only paying for the rachet, and the bearings are the same with even other brands like novatech etc? are you sure? yet you complained about hearing some "ping" when you shift or coast down hill. smh.

      Nice one, thats great to know. Do you know what hubs the Sl1 wheel-sets use? I have been told they use DT Swiss 350. Thanks for the first response dude

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque  Před 6 lety +1

      Delaine Coppock giant made hub shell, normal style ratchet. (not the dt star ratchet). Very simple design, decent bearings, can't co wrong. Sl0 not worth the extra IMO.
