In 1996, Sega's legendary AM2 studio released what may be the most disliked game in their catalog: Sonic the Fighters. Often derided by both Sonic and fighting game fans, this game has built its own community on the outskirts of the FGC. This is that community's story.
This video started as a freelance article pitch years ago, but I finally was able to get it together this year thanks to the support I was able to find with my Melee videos. I hope those who have come to my channel for Melee will be open to learning about another game where funny cartoon characters punch each other.
Thanks to ‪@shadetail‬ , @Cronnicossy, ‪@SonicArena‬ , ‪@mysticnoodle‬ , ‪@MKMaster250‬ and KOS for footage featured in this video as well as for your input putting this together, also of course thanks to Matt Beach, Raxx8, Gizaru, and so many more people omg. Also thanks to ‪@GuileWinQuote‬ for offering FGC wisdom to this stinky Smash player, KOS for a bunch of stuff, Justin and Raine for help with arcade machine footage, and Resprit, Kadence and Nona for revision notes.

Where do I even begin? This is the video that the Sonic the Fighters community deserves, and I just want to thank you for all the extra time and effort you put into shining a light on the game and everyone who contributed to the scene! When I first began hosting tournaments, I never thought we’d make it as far as we have. Over the years, we’ve formed a close bond as a community and I truly believe that Sonic the Fighters has a bright future as a competitive game! Fantastic video. - Polymath

The game, Sonic the Fighters, itself, is it's own low-tier hero. A spectacle of a game with so many secrets and some of the most kindhearted badasses a community can ask for. Especially a Sonic community.

The whole "critics hated the game" debacle is why I hate when journalists that don't know jack about fighting games review fighting games. It's like asking someone that doesn't know and it's not interested in driving/racing to review a racing simulation game, of course they're not going to like the game because they're not understanding 10% of the mechanics behind it, plus STF has one-button combos which enables button mashers to just carpal tunnel their way through arcade mode and then think it's the game's fault. Same reason why MK receives a ton of outstanding reviews, because there's lots of eye-candy for non-fighting game players there, thus they forget to review the game in a more technical way.
Anyways, really great video, it itched me to try and convince people to play this game again over here lol

I've kinda just stopped giving a shit about reviews almost entirely when I realized that a lot of my favourite games (various Mega Man games, NEO TWEWY and the fighting game genre as a whole) are things that more casual players (so most of the reviewers I've seen) can't for the life of them seem to be able to actually review the games and not spread misinformation on the depth of those games due to just not knowing shit about them. Especially since I'm more into the technical side of said games and hearing nobody but like maybe one or two people actually talking about the technical side and saying the games aren't as mechanically deep as they actually are just angers me

Me and some friends love messing around with random fighting games like this, and about 5 or 6 years ago we dedicated a night to Sonic the Fighters. We didn't know anything about the competitive community, so it basically just felt like a 6 hour session of us going into uncharted waters of undiscovered tech and weird mechanics, and it's one of my best memories of playing competitive fighters. Just a nonstop night of "WAIT that's how that works??" and "YOU CAN DO THAT? That's so sick!"
I really love that this video exists. After that night with friends, I found myself as a believer in this games potential, but never really dug into it beyond that. Which is my bad. But it's amazing to see it gets the highlight it deserves with more info and history than I would've ever expected.

What can I say, except, this was amazing. You clearly put in a whole lot of effort, and despite me knowing basically nothing about this game I was hooked all the way through. I especially love how each character has their little spotlight through different players and commentary, and I was able to understand basic principles of the game thanks to your explanations. I'm also intrigued by the fact the game seems really well balanced, as evidenced by low tiers Amy and Bark putting in strong showings. That's pretty crazy considering the game's legacy as a knock-off "kiddie" fighting game.
I think videos like this are a reminder that so long as you have a passionate community, however small, a fanbase is never truly "dead". Nowadays people glance over player counts and make assumptions, but I think if you love a game and can find other people to play against, that's all that matters. Maybe there could be a follow up video in the future if events continue?
On a similar note, I'm heavily invested in the game Keyforge, a card game with physical decks that can also be uploaded to a fan site and played online. Despite its reputation as a "dead" game, the current NKFL (Nordic Keyforge League) has over 200 players competing, plus a whole bunch of other online tournaments, the recent Worlds event and store championships building up starting in March alongside the release of the next set, Grim Reminders. (Of which I am thoroughly hyped.)
Yes, other card games have way more players: Magic, Hearthstone, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Flesh and Blood, Marvel Snap, Legends of Runeterra and even the recent Lorcana making some waves. But those player counts don't mean anything next to the fact that Keyforge is the most fun I've ever had with a card game and continues to both excite and surprise me. And that's what gaming is all about. :)

I clicked on this video just to have something to calm me down and fall asleep to. It's nothing personal, I just like having something in the background and will often click on longer videos.
However, this was way more interesting than I anticipated. How this silly little game I played with friends when I was younger actually had a competitive scene unlike anything else was just so deeply intriguing that I felt myself glued to the screen. Then we get to Sunset Showdown and hearing the story about Mystic I was so invested in his story. Having 10 back to back matches that all were close was like something from a movie. The gameplay itself just felt unreal. I felt more awake than ever and it's 6 AM as of writing this comment. After all of that, I clicked on the timeline and saw another 30 minutes left.
I thought a 2 and a half hour long video about a tiny fighting game's competitive scene was stretching it, but I was thoroughly entertained all the way. Might be the best documentary online that I've ever seen. Great work!

  • @OutOfTouch_YT
    @OutOfTouch_YT Před 6 měsíci +5

My only theory before i watch the whole video on why it didn't take off and a kid that lived in the 90s and SEGA consoles:
its cause American generally didn't understand fighting games and to this day, lots of communities are very segregated by people that have polarizing opinions that gatekeep and discourage very normal people away from playing it. Sonic The Fighters has multiple archetypes and plenty of rock, paper, scissors play that you'd even find in Smash or Street Fighter. Even worse for being a Sonic game and having a weird reputation of some bad games by people from the early 2000s who are big Mario fans disregard everything Sonic or at least the North America marketed was, and even weirder was all this was happening simultaneously while people demanded console experiences be 30+ hrs of content instead of short casual bursts that SEGA liked making. They were like the TikTok of video games in a way and were forced to adapt to a new market of stay at home farmers.
Moving on to Virtua Fighter, its also an unorthodox game where you have a short timer like 30 seconds and die really quickly thanks to counter-hit mechanic combos that can POTENTIALLY end lives in one string (go look this up, I'm not joking lmfao) and ring-outs. The only game's particular genre of 3D 3 button fighting it has more in common is something like platform fighters where neutral game is very important and of course early Soul Caliber/Fighting Vipers/Dragon Ball Z Budakai/Dead or Alive. At least this would be more true with Virtua Fighter 1 to 3TB... (VF3TB I heard was barely making some kind of comeback in Japan.) Just like Smash Bros, Sonic The Fighters has random mechanics like "catch up" or rage.
So it's not very shocking to me that Sonic The Fighters took forever to find its audience. Its a fun game, but in a strange way, it was a game too ahead of its time and had too many scarecrows surrounding this game.

They're both titles where combos are more a product of getting multiple reads in sequence rather than a reward for getting the correct opening, so the counter hit becomes this very powerful and sometimes oppressive mechanic.

Havent finished the video yet, but I already really love the approach of researching three eras of the game's lifespan, since docs like this sometimes make the assumption that if it was unpopular, surely nobody's touched it til now.

I can't believe you made me root for this Noodle just to introduce a Knowledge and then telling me that they're duking it out and that Knowledge won. I don't think I've ever smiled as much watching a fighting game match as I did when two Barks were bopping each other over the head. Rooting for both sides of the match in equal amounts is such a weird feeling.

I never played StF myself but back in my cringe teenage years on the Sonic corner of DeviantART, Honey the Cat was a particular favorite of mine. (This was back when we only knew of her by hacking Sonic Gems Collection, where she was glitchy and parts of her model wouldn't display correctly, so a lot of fanart from the time didn't include her pigtails.) It makes me happy to see her not only get officially implemented into the game, but also end up in the Archie comics and develop an even bigger fanbase as a result. Fingers crossed that she gets more official acknowledgement in the future :)

This is an incredible video dude. Ever since I played on the Gems collection as a kid I always wondered if there was a community around this game. Seeing people pull off insane combos is just so entertaining! And I think that’s the biggest appeal of Fighters: that it’s cartoony and fast. It just makes it so much fun to spectate or play!
