  • Kyle heard that the new software version for Rivain R1T (2023.10.02) improved the charging thermal longevity and curve before the battery pack hits max temperature and derates. Kyle also found that they way the charging power is being derated has been updated as well as the messaging during these events being deleted.

  • @justinfowler2857

    Sounds like Rivian should just set their battery cooling system to start at a certain battery temperature and then just leave it on until the session is complete.

    • @jacobcarlson4010
      @jacobcarlson4010 Před rokem

      Yep, most likely a static temperature limit in the BMS firmware. What I don’t get is why the actual **ck they don’t have the master computer (the one behind the screen, managing all the systems) poll the BMS temperature sensors and start to bring the battery cooling online/ramp up BEFORE the thermal limit. It’s not rocket science, FFS.

    It has been a while since I have watched the Munroe tear down of the Rivian packs, but if I recall correctly it does not have the cooling capacity that we are used to with Tesla products which were initially the industry benchmark. The battery cells do not have as much surface area exposed to the coolant vs tesla. It would be interesting to see how much more they can squeeze out of software adjustments.

  • @jwardell
    @jwardell Před rokem +12

    Haha the unexpected shoutout from Kyle the day after I sell out of parts... Yes, there was a noticeable improvement in the .10 updates, Rivian is now running the compressor much harder to keep the pack cooler earlier in the curve. It used to charge and heat up quickly til 52C and then fall off the cliff crashing down to about 70kW. The earlier update helped a little bit but the compressor didn't run much. Now you will feel the compressor running full tilt well before the pack hits 50, and never actually lets the max temp hit that limit and fall off the cliff. Derating to 100kW or so is much better than before.

    • @jwardell
      @jwardell Před rokem +3

      I should add unfortunately, EA has eliminated all stalls over 150 in New England so I can’t quite duplicate the previous cliff log data, but the pack would clearly heat straight to 122F then derate and slowly ramp cooling, and now it cranks cooling early so it never climbs above 118F. Also folks don’t seem to realize it takes a half hour or more of driving not only heat a cold pack, but to cool it back down after a charge. This is why I stare at my temp gauges all the time :)

    Kyle, I’d really enjoy seeing you do this same test on a 150-180Kw charger to compare the curve difference. On my newer R1T I’ve seen what you are seeing on the 350 chargers it holds over 200kw for a period then drops and slowly ramps back up. But I’m not seeing a second drop until after 65%. Yet on my last few sessions I’ve used the 150 EA units and seeing a constant 145-160kw without any derating and it holds steady throughout the charge until reaching the same 65% area where the battery seems to slow charging. Please do a comparison test if there are chargers available! My truck is still >5k miles with mixed dcfc…

The other thing is that mining and processing EV battery materials is releasing CO2 into the atmosphere and one video I saw estimates that one typically needs to drive 60K miles to reach the breakeven point. Definitely needs to be better battery technology to increase kWh density and charging cycles. Also, need to move away from relying on China battery manufacturers.

    Its not an 800V system. The pack is going to get much hotter due the higher amperage required to get those faster charging speeds, rather than higher voltage, so the cooling system has to work that much harder and earlier. All large battery EVs need to be 800V or higher architecture. It's so much easier to keep the pack cooler is such systems due to only a quarter of the heat generated -- Ohms law. It's why the Taycan charges so much better and at much higher speeds. It's night and day when compared.
    But it's early. They're learning. The gen are going to be 800V systems.
