How to: Hardwire install a dash cam with USB power supply

  • Guide to installing a USB dash camera wired into the car with properly concealed cabling, no permanent modifications to the factory electrics, and auto power on/off with the ignition switch.
    This video covers a single-circuit install with a 5 volt USB power adapter, as USB-powered dash cams don't have a way of implementing a proper parking mode that would necessitate a bit more wiring. If you want a functional parking mode you will need a different camera and different wiring, see this video instead: • How to: Hardwire insta...
    The dash cam featured is a Viofo A119S.

    You can obviously do the wiring any way you like. The way shown uses a fuse tap and a hardwired USB power supply. You will need:
    * USB dash cam, see above
    * USB cable, length to suit
    * 24 or 12 volt adapter for USB, featured is a dual socket unit with cable terminating in an SAE plug. Amazon links ~
    US: amzn.to/2C4xDIs | UK: amzn.to/2krC1Ke
    * Fuse tap, make sure you get the right size. Amazon links ~
    US: amzn.to/2j0Stko | UK: amzn.to/2o3nGZC
    * Additional fuse to suit, 5 amps is about right
    * Other wiring and crimps or solder as required
    * Voltmeter
    * Tools to get behind trim. Socket or spanner to work nuts/bolts for ground terminal.
    The car featured is Ford Mondeo Mk3. Here's a new video showing the same hardware installed in a VW Golf: • How to: Hardwire insta...

    Thanks for making this guide! Very well thought out parts & video & instructions. I think yours is the "right" way to do this.
    My ghetto way of doing this would be to jam (between the a fuse and contact) a piece of wire to power a female cigarette lighter stowed by fuse box. Plug in the male onto the female. Take the output microUSB wire from the fuse panel area through the "A" pillar & headliner to the camera. This would require extra purchase of only a female cigarette lighter and nothing else.

    Nice video. I hope people appreciate how much neater this type of installation is over using the "cigar" type power outlet. I have had this type of setup in my 2015 Genesis using front, rear and two rear mounted diagonally front facing cameras. I even got a compliment from the service techs at the local car dealer on the installation. I think though that the cameras themselves make them nervous.

      That is a point (recording while in maintenance) , thanks for mentioning it. I had a pretty decent result on two cars with wiring the cams on the side frames going under the glove box to the cig. lighter with the standard plug in socket. My lighter shuts off electricity while parking. (No need for me to use parking mode) Way better than lwttingbthe cables hang und done in 45 minutes.

      I'm an installer and trainer. and aways assume the clients are cluless, what might be obvious to one person may not be obvious to another
      One golden rule when training/giving instructions is always assume they no nothing, and start at the beginning and explain every step

      Yes I've recommended it to a few ppl altho I haven't looked at it myself. The one drawback is it's only 30fps vs the 119's 60fps, which does make a difference for a dash cam.

    Awesome thorough video. I learnt something today. The other thing you can do is use a power cutoff to cut the dash cam off if the battery reached a certain voltage (12.2V is pretty safe) so it'll film while parked but won't kill your battery.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  Před 6 lety

      You can also use a separate battery pack to further save the car battery, but the other problem without a dedicated parking mode is that you will over-write all your driving footage after just a while of parking, e.g. with 3 hrs of the garage wall. I have yet to experiment with the software driven faux parking mode on the new A119 firmware, if it works ok then I will be tempted to look into a battery system.

    • @KR7PT
      @KR7PT Před 6 lety

      Craig's DIY Car Living in Australia, discharging lithium ion batteries in 70°C+ in the car sounds like a recipe for disaster lol. I'm looking at getting the A119 Pro, and although I'm not likely to use the parking mode in my area it's nice to know that it's an option. You could also put in a little switch so in your garage you could switch the camera off, or just straight unplug it

    Great job. One caution. Once the GPS plug in cable gets old it will start to make the camera intermittent. I had to bypass the GPS mount and plug directly in the camera. This was true for both 119's I have so it is not something that was a fluke. I am about to install another 119 and hope that has been solved. Dielectric grease did not solve the problem thus I think the mount of the GPS is not robust enough to handle the plug in. The camera works well and will let you know when the SD card is shot too by coming on and off acting intermittent. Again nice job!

I was poking around with my multimeter, and I had one probe on the chassis for ground and I poked the live/hot into both terminals of the fuse and both were reading 12v, so does it matter which way a fuse would go into this slot?

I would like to feed the camara off the interior light power, the cigar plug is too large to fit under light fixture whereas the usb would fit nicely if in fact it provides the 5 volts required, not the 12 volt as the cigar lighter provides. Thanks for the video. Peace. Andy usa

    I also used the ACC power on the radio with the original adapter from the 119S V2. Problems is, the ACC gets switched off when you start. So sometimes , when the camera is not fully booted up,you start, it looses power for 1 second and gets power again. Then the camera switches off and not on again.
    The timing must be perfect to do get that right , but as my camera is behind my mirror also, I dont always look at it. So it can sometimes be off when you think its recording.
    I then installed a diode and capasitor to keep power for a few seconds, but the camera does not like the slow lowering of the voltage. Will update my circuit later.
    Thanx for the video.

      I was thinking that might be a problem but it works for me. I'm not sure why your camera is staying off though; if it has power, it should be on, unless switched off, regardless. Maybe there's something wrong with it.

      I have the same issue with my camera which is currently just plugged directly into the 12V power supply. I'm a total idiot when it comes to anything electrical but seems there must be some kind of circuit that cuts the power to all other feeds for a brief second to ensure maximum battery power for startup. My camera must get confused partway through it's bootup sequence and doesn't recover in time for when the power comes back. Doesn't happen every time but quite often.
      Great overall video though and nice neat installation using minimum distance from power source to camera.

    Great video, thanks - I'm looking at getting a "VIOFO Dash Cam A129 Duo Dual Dashboard Camera" and have no idea how to install it as I don't really know anything about cars/electrics - Who would you suggest I ask to do this? Halfords, kwikfit (hahah no) ? I don't want one that plugs into the "cig lighter" as my satnav uses that, so prefer one that is all wired in like you showed in this vid.

      I suggest you buy Viofo's hardwire kit, it's not expensive, that is intended to provide proper ignition control and thus parking mode with that system. It has a battery conserving function that can be configured liberally or conservatively. Then just give it all to a competent auto electrician. Yes I would avoid the quick lube places (for everything, including lube).

      @@CraigsDIY Thanks Craig for the reply. I'll have a look at the hardwire kit as well.
