  • I finally got the Generac 2200i generator running smoothly again. In this video I share how I did some trouble shooting and finally replaced the carburetor. Since we replaced this with a larger generator over the summer when this began malfunctioning, I will now use this up at the shed to charge batteries. I still love this little geny!!
NOTE: This is NOT a how to video. You must have knowledge of 4 stroke engines to attempt this DIY replacement.

      WHOA! WHOA!
I have what looks like the identical Craftsman model (with the same "stepper motor hunting" problem), but the valve clearance specs are 0.10 MILLIMETER or .004" (FOUR thousandths of an inch). Can you confirm your specs?

@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid: Strange on the differing valve specs...
Checked the spark arrestor in mine today, but not enough clogging to make a difference.
What happened is, the unit sat for about 2 years with untreated fuel. Went to fire it up and had no-start. Had fuel flow TO the carb since I was able to drain fuel continuously through the fuel bowl. Was able to eye-dropper some fuel into the crankcase vent port on the air filter pipe in front of the carb, and it would start and run for a few seconds, so, fuel TO the carb, but not THROUGH the carb.
Was hoping the jet was in the fuel bowl screw, but it was not (couldn't find a detailed breakdown of the carb anywhere). End of the bowl screw had what looked like dark, cooked fuel on it. Tried to remove the carb for inspection, but found splitting the case was necessary, and I didn't want to go that far YET : )
Removed the fuel bowl and spotted/removed the jet; looked like SOLID brass... like it NEVER HAD an orifice! Cleaned it out, reassembled, started on first pull and unit ran PERFECTLY for at least 1/2 hour run-test on Eco and normal settings.
Couple days later, went to warm it up for an oil change... NOW it is hunting via the stepping motor, but the jury is still out as to WHY... even re-checked the jet again, but it was still clean. Drained ALL fuel and replaced with fresh with no change.
I'll be on the horn with Generac tomorrow trying to confirm some part numbers; I'm tempted to try the stepping motor first if it's available, but it would be a strange coincidence if that went on the fritz in between those two sessions. May just get the whole carb/step motor assy., but try the step motor alone FIRST, then default to the whole assembly if that doesn't work. I can probably get the carb going if I pull/disassemble it, but don't want to go that far without a replacement in-hand in case that's what it takes.

There is a brass jet on top of the carburetor that can be unscrewed with a flat head screwdriver. Take it out and clean out the tiny hole at the end of it with a wire off of a wire brush. Flush it with carburetor cleaner, and reinstall it, and no more surging.

  • @rockyracoon3281
    @rockyracoon3281 Před 3 lety +10

    Great job Rich!
The reason why the engine was surging is because it was running lean. Usually because the fuel passages and /or jets get gummed up and/or partially blocked. This happens even if you use the red stuff to prevent this. I hope you didn't throw out the old carb.
There is a trick that everyone can use that I learned from an old timer. Of course try some carb cleaner first. This will usually help. Another quick thing to try is to rev the engine up as fast as you can and cover the air intake with your hand until the engine almost stalls. This will use the engine to create more vacuum and draw more fuel and air at a higher volume through the carb and hopefully clean or dislodge any gum or dirt. This may need to be done several times and it works on any motor. Including your car.
Now for the trick. If none of these things help, and you have to remove the carb. Take the carb apart as much as you can and soak everything in LEMON JUICE (the filtered kind. No pulp). The acid in the lemon juice will clean and dissolve any gunk, gum, crud & dirt. 30 minutes is usually enough time for the lemon juice to do it's job. The old timer said he kept a large pot of boiling lemon juice but I never needed or tried the boiling part. I just rolled with the room temp stuff.
Then use the little extension tube on your carb cleaner nozzle and spray cleaner through all the passages and jets you can find both ways. Wear eye protection cause the cleaner will spray out around the tip of the extension tube and directly into your eyes until you get a good position and seal on the tube. Then blow compressed air through the jets and passages. Spray down the rest of the carb and parts with the carb and choke cleaner. Then lube all the parts, threads, and moveable parts with your choice of lube and then reassemble the carb. The lemon juice trick has worked every time for me. Even on an old Rototiller I have that had fuel in it for at least 6 years. That one was soaked overnight. After you are finished, filter the remaining lemon juice and put it back in the bottles for next time. Keep it out of the kitchen and label it used lemon juice so someone doesn't accidentally consume it. Yes they are out there. Lol

Hi Steve, there is a lot of good info there .But I really think problem is that electric( stepper motor ) which is what Generac calls it which is connected directly to the butterfly and controls the speed. I did take the bowl off the carb and it was very clean looking inside . I will do another video on it when I take it apart thanks for watching Steve hope all is well and Merry Christmas !

@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid I haven't had to fix a carb yet with a stepper motor. All the stuff I own is old except for the Honda inverter but that hasn't given me a problem yet in 16 years. Wait, that's old too. It's probably got a stepper motor thought. If you think it's the stepper motor, it probably is. I just wanted to share the lemon juice trick with everyone. So if your engine doesn't have a stepper motor and is surging. It's probably running lean due to a partially clogged carb. If you decide to remove the carb, try the lemon juice trick. Lemon juice is cheaper than carb/choke cleaner. Merry Christmas to you guys 😷

    Great Job!!!!
I have a Craftsman 2200i, which seems to be a Generac and rebadged as Craftsman!
Recently, I had to use it and for the first time, will not start!! I figured since oil seems to be ok and full of gas, I would drop the bowl and clean the jets.
I utilized the drain tube they have with the set screw and let me tell you....took forever. Started at like 3:30p and when I went to bed was still coming out...SLOWLY, so figured let it go all night and check it in the morning! It worked.
So, looked at it today and took off the air cleaner system and screw on the bottom of the bowl and stuck a twist tie up thru the jet hole. Didn't work! :(
Next step, I'll have to dry some carb clean and see if I can break things down. If that doesn't work, I'm really going to need to do a more comprehensive breakdown, like this video! Not looking forward to it.
Funny, I thought the bowl was integral to the carb unit and not removable, as I removed the screw and tried to twist and remove it and nothing happened! Then I left and went and did something and came back and it had fallen straight off!! :O That was weird.
Thanks again for the video and if any suggestions on if it is a dirty carb/jet....let me know. Thanks in advance.

I always look for a fuel shut off valve if I'm buying a new small engine machine. Then them run dry, use non ethanol fuel and use Sta Bil and you'll never experience this issue. Machines without fuel shut off valves will gum up and run like crap pretty quickly.
I'm not a fan of the economy modes either as I don't think the carbs keep themselves cleaned out well enough... so when I'm done with it, I turn off economy mode for a few minutes before I turn off the fuel for shut down.
Nice work on the repair. I wonder if you could have tested the stepper motor and if it was working fine...just tear the carb down and clean it vs replace it? I'm cheap that way lol

It's such a compact area to do anything on this thing but I took it apart the best I could with help from this video..Sprayed brake cleaner in the carb throat and a lot of gunk came back out and I removed the carb bowl cleaned it out as well..I did not remove the carb to clean it deeper as I was worried about the linkage control..Is it air operated or? I mean when you turn the switch from off to run to choke..it is very stiff..anyway..I could not start aside from starting with starting fluid..I tried to keep it running on starter fluid hoping it would maybe pull the gas through and unclog itself and after maybe doing this, shooting fluid into the air intake for 3 minutes it STILL would not stay running on it's own so I guess time for a new carb! I admit I feel slightly more confidant after this video! Wish me luck! I will FIRST check the spark arrestor though!!! I did the screen like you did but did not pull out that long thing! I will now! If I was you I’d turn the screw on by the little tube so it drains the gas every time you done using it for a while. It should prevent it from happening again.

Thanks for the info. I fear that it may just have been a clogged spark arrestor and if I put this carburetor back on it may run properly. But that's another video thanks for watching thanks for commenting

It probably did at the time with the rpm’s reving up and down. Since it wasn’t running right I shut off until I could take it apart.

Why not just clean the carb?
