Well that was Westons and Canada Bread. I think Westons was still owned by Loblaws at the time. Westons struck a deal that if they admitted to price fixing first they would be able to keep their government bread contracts. Canada Bread is banned from competing for government Bread contracts for 10 years.

During the pandemic prices of groceries did rise. I acquired out of necessity, a well stocked pantry, that we use on a regular basis. I shop loss leaders regularly to keep my pantry stocked. This keeps costs down. I shop independently owned grocery stores as well as Metro,Sobeys, FreshCo, Food basics, Giant tiger. In the summer months I shop at farmers markets. There is a list online, (Farmers' Markets Ontario). There are many in the city limits. I have a vegetable garden in the summer. We have cut down our meat consumption considerably. We eat vegetarian meals 3 to 4 days per week. I bake my own bread regularly. I have managed to whittle my grocery cost to usually less than one hundred dollars per week.

I don't like the gouging but you can't find prices lower than Superstore. I tried everywhere. Who cares about bread, it is so cheap it hardly matters. I always buy bread at 30% off because they always have some. Walmart has no sales and they give no points. I save about $200 per month just on optimum points. I have $250 in points now and next week I will have about $300 and get a free shopping of $300. Costco is good for nothing. You have to pay for a membership and then get 1 % back with a credit card they have for you. Canadian Tire gives 3% back in points when you buy groceries, but not at Walmart or Costco, only Superstore and other grocery stores. You get 10cents back per litre of gas at superstore. That is cheaper than Costco gas and Costco always has lineups for gas and the store is always jam packed with people.

      thank you!
all of this 'sudden inflation' is DIRECTLY traced back to the China-based Coronavirus.
ALL of the current economic uncertainty in prices, commodities and real estate is just the AFTERMATH of the Chinese Pandemic. Interest rates are where they are now BECAUSE of inflation. Inflation happened BECAUSE of the drop in supply of goods / services. The supply dropped BECAUSE widespread production in facilities and industries was halted during the course of the Chinese Pandemic with millions of workers everywhere refusing to get vaccinated. Throw in some politics at the hand of the already incompetent Trudeau government, and what you have is a recipe for total financial disaster that we are all literally (and figuratively) paying for NOW.
none of the above can be refuted - they are all proven facts.

Okay. That was the answer when I asked at Joeseph Howe in Halifax when the lineup was halfway down the store.
Seriously, there's a window to the office above the cash. Whomever is running the store should use that window every now and a again and RUN the store.
Making people wait for 2 cashiers for longer than it took to shop, ESPECIALLY the elderly is pretty bad behavior for a flagship store.
Cutting back on staff anticipating less customers is the antithesis of what you should be doing.
Did your business degrees come from a bar bathroom, or is it possible that the managers never ever spent one minute of experience on customer service?
Someone told the cashier a nice script to say, and I know a nice script when I hear one.
Perfectly nice young lady, and no problem with her, BUT if you think a 20 year old can explain to a 50 year old the complexities of economics, they wouldn't be a cashier at Loblaws.
It's like watching people not understanding anything, and when the line got about 14 carts deep down the centre aisle of the flagship head office store, I watched. Not one person looked down from that office.
Hmmm. Wonder how the floor is going?
After I asked an associate to ask management to open another lane, just didn't happen.
When a problem is directly pointed out, the manager comes down and helps out. Nope, just ignored.
My concern is perhaps a manager who should know every element of a store inside and out, perhaps doesn't know how to be a cashier.
Loblaws, if you want someone to manage a store, I promise you that labour expense will go up a lot, and profits will justify it.

All the grocery retailers are in same boat so, why Loblaws? Walmarts is there but guess they know as an American company, would not care what Canadians think. This then begs the question, why? Would they not be better off shopping around rather than holding them to ransom. I see jobless folks with not much to do. I typically shop after Farm Boy for produce and Loblaws for everything else. With inflation, I use Food Basics, Metro and Freshco.
