    The only way that second one is a 'starter' cage is if the animal is literally a newborn you stole from its mother (or 'starting' as in from the store to home and maybe a few minutes while you make sure the actual home is fully secured before releasing your itty bitty beast into it).

  • @reginasrodents4672
    @reginasrodents4672 Před 3 lety +49

    Hello Munchie! I commented this on your latest cage review but i'm not sure if you saw it. I think the info might interest you as its something you've talked about in a few videos so i wanna comment it again in hope you will see it:
    I'm from Germany and i keep hamsters and mice.
    I've heard you say the german hamster minimum is 860 sqin a few times now and i want to inform you that thats not correct. The "official" minimum by the TVT and BMEL is 775 sqin. Most hamster rescues require adopters to have 775 sqin for dwarf hybrids and 930 sqin for syrians and robos, and theres a study showing cages should be at least 1550 sqin so that is seen as a minimum by a lot of people as well.
    I've never heard of 860 sqin being used as a minimum anywhere in germany, may i ask where you got that number from?
    I also wanna say something about the "people easily get in trouble for neglecting their pets" thing... sadly that is mostly just true for cats and dogs. While we do have some laws and regulations for rodent care, they are not being enforced when it comes to pets such as hamsters or mice. The only reason someone would actually get in trouble over bad hamster care is if they are literally killing their pets or are an animal hoarder in which case our "official" minimum could come into play. Then it could be used as proof of neglect in court. But it is only a guideline and not an actual law meaning we sadly cant call the cops on anyone using a crittertrail haha.
    Basically we are just lucky to have an amazing hamster community in germany, everything outside of that is sadly not that much better than the rodent care in other countries.
    If you ever have any questions about german rodent care or how our rescues work, feel free to ask me!

    • @nachgeben
      @nachgeben Před 3 lety +3

      I think she means, regarding laws, that you still have something. In the USA, you can basically do anything to these poor things and face no consequences. Ever.

    • @teresedaigle7336
      @teresedaigle7336 Před 3 lety +2

      The advice we all needed

    • @reginasrodents4672
      @reginasrodents4672 Před 3 lety +8

      @@nachgeben Yeah i get that. But while our laws might be better than in the USA, they are still far from perfect. And like i said, most laws we have for rodent care aren't actually being enforced. People still keep their hamsters in pairs, feed them with rolled oats, keep them in crittertrail-like cages with no bedding. Theres even vets here that say hamsters shouldnt get water, only cucumber and vitamin drops. And pet stores still get their animals from mills. All with no real consequences. And when someone does get in trouble, its because of rescues or activists working hard on proving it and holding them accountable... It for sure doesn't happen easily.
      I completely understand why people from the US are frustrated with their pet care standards but i dont think they should idiolize and strive for what we have in germany so much because tbh it's complete shit as well. Strive for something better instead.

    • @nachgeben
      @nachgeben Před 3 lety +2

      @@reginasrodents4672 I get what you're saying, totally. But we kind of just pray for baby steps over here. Using cats and dogs for example. Mistreatment suffers harsh penalties and even lifetime bans of animal ownership there. Here, you're lucky if they get more than a fine for, say, starving a dog to death.
      For rodents, even seeing half-hearted laws on the books would be really great. That seems like a low standard to reach for, but it opens a door for pushing by activists (who aren't PETA) to get more.
      idk I'm just disheartened that even here on youtube, there are videos showing luring rats into water traps and letting them drown, and it's okay with youtube, the authorities, and most Americans.
      Don't take all the above as a lack of appreciation for your comment though! It's just frustration. I actually have family in Germany, and they're constantly horrified by stories over here about animal treatment in general and the lack of consequences. I live right next to a literal puppy mill, and the authorities in my state don't care.

    We use the critter carriers too and I always just tie a ribbon around the outside of it in case the side-locks rub and the top pops off. We swear by the critter keeper style too - for all of our Chinese Dwarfs. We use them for everyday stuff also - for showing the little guys “too big” parts of our house or including them in a special holiday moment, for example (I’m trained in enrichment).

    I used to use the crittertrails (sadly) until I realized that those were not suitable. But before I upgraded them, I had a TON of the crittertrails. I now use the crittertrails as travel carriers, to keep them in while I clean their cage, and for a sand bath! You can use the bottom pan of the crittertrail for keeping sand in, it is large, can hold quite a bit of sand, mostly chew proof, and has holes on the sides that they can use to go into it. If you have upgraded from a crittertrail, don't throw it away. You can use it for a lot of different things!

    If any guinea pig parents happen to see this, I have used the green Ware cage that she talked about in this video to transport 1 piggy before. It's good and I used it for 7 years with my first piggy, but wouldn't recommend using it for adult piggies for any trips further than 10 minutes because it is too small. The large living world cage that she mentioned, however, is a better size for 1 adult piggy or maybe 2 babies. Personally, I use an extra small dog carrier (the MidWest Spree pet carrier) because it is escape-proof for guinea pigs, made of a much sturdier plastic than other carriers, and provides enough room for 2 adult guinea pigs with their food bowls and a water bottle. Thank you for making this video, Munchie! As someone who travels a lot, it's really awesome to see you talk about something that may seem mundane to most but is actually really important to ensure the safety of pets when traveling.

    I have the original Crittertrail, before Kaytee started making it, and it came with a much larger wheel. It was 7" and fit in the original much better. The original was a bit bigger. I didn't know much about keeping mice, but I had my mouse (who was an emergency rescue when he was found abandoned behind my apartment complex, so I hadn't even been ready for him) out all the time when I was home. The upper compartment has a cap that's on the main lid's corner, to act as a small travel carrier on its own. He had a lot of health issues--needed laser amputation of his tail due to a growth they couldn't treat, for example--so I think the smaller one was better. Especially because I held him in my lap the entire drive and cooed at him.
    I loved that mouse. He gave affection like a rat, according to the vet who observed him with me. Now, I have a mouse that prefers drop-kicking me and scuttling under her shavings of her much larger tank, because GIANT BAD. GIANT CAN GO DO THINGS TO HERSELF.

    I have the living world one purple carrier in small for my dwarf hamster. She chews the grey slits over and over when I place her there (I place her there when cleaning her tank) but has never made a dent in it in the many times I’ve placed her there (never more than 30 minutes). I do add bedding for her to hide if she wishes to do so and even with that she isn’t tall enough to chew the lid so I’ve had no escapes lol. I will say over the time since I got it in may of 2020, the lid has become a little easier to open, it used to be a little harder to open I had to do it the way she showed but now I just pushed the lock part back and it’ll pop open. So far so good and it’s more than enough space for short term travel or for when you need them out of the way to clean.

Luckily I've only used it in the car twice and they didn't try to open it and for now I do use it as a holding place when I'm cleaning my hamsters cage but I keep an eye on it and if I leave the room I set the whole carrier into my hamster's tank so if he does pop it open he's still inside another cage.

    Hi! I use the you&me tipe of carrier (of another brand since I'm in europe)and it works great! I used it to get my hammie to the vet for a check up and it is sturdy and fit a lot of bedding. I put inside a toilet roll, 4-5 inches of bedding and a chew toy so that my dwarf hamster can hide, chew and borrow a bit. Since the vet is just about a 15 minutes car drive it was fine ^-^ sometimes I also use it when I deep clean his cage, otherwise I just let him freeroam in his playpen next to me while I clean the cage.
    Btw I use the "ferplast CRICETI 100 cage" which is over 800 sq inches of floor space, 7 inches of bedding, 9 inches silent runner, big sandbath with a hide inside, multiple hides around the cage, branches and corglog tunnel around, many chew toys, two water bottles and the "bunny" brand dwarf seed mix with few adds by me....but my hammie keeps chewing the bars and monkey barring....I dont know what else to do :/ do any of you have any suggestion? The vet told me the hamster is completely healthy and probably does it to get my attention since he already has everything he needs. How can I improve my care and the situation? I dont want him to get stressed out....

    I've used the first one, the living world hagen carrier and the critter keepers. One thing that you didn't mention about the first one is that after a while of using it the plastic sides break off. I had mine for around 8 months when one of the sides just cracked at the seam and I could no longer disassemble and reassemble it, I had to duct tape it shut and just clean the carrier through the door. Other than that it worked out great for me for about 2 years before I retired it as a carrier, now I just use it as a "hide" during free roam time. The Hagen carrier and the critter keeper are the ones I currently use. The lid is pretty flimsy but I haven't had any problems with escapes, I dunno maybe my pets aren't as smart 😅. The little lid in critter keeper broke off so I just glued it shut and take off the whole lid like you do. One problem I've had with it is that the bottom is stained from the urine, even though I clean it after every use it's just kind of become permanently yellowy brown. It doesn't stink or anything but if you're a stickler for aesthetics it's not great. I don't know if any of this is helpful but I thought I'd add my two cents 😊

    I have the first one that she listed, I work at a Petco and used it to take my gerb home (he declanned w his brother pretty violently and was being given away for a small donation). It was fine just to get him home which was like 7 minutes away, but the vet is 30 minutes away so when I take him to get his nails clipped or anything I don’t use it. The metal bars WILL result in bar biting, which can result in a broken jaw. For right now I use a ten gallon tank with a proper top so that way I can attach a water bottle, put a good amount of bedding for him to burrow, and toss in a hidey for him. It’s a decent price but honestly I wouldn’t recommend the carrying case.

    I had a living world carrie (although in the UK it isn't called living world) and I love them never had a single problem even when I've moved home and had to take two trains and a bus totalling about 4 hours I guess I just had a very well behaved hamster

    The living world small carrier is a fantastic single rat carrier, I use it when my rodents have independent vet appointments or moving or even picking up a new baby if the wire mini cage (about 8cm by 20cm) won't suit or is broken 😅

    I use the living world carrier, I used to have a small cheap one and I was only okay with getting it since my hamster was only going to be in there while I was cleaning the cage. My hamster ended up showing me he hated that thing so until last month when I could afford to get the living world carrier, I was using a bin without a lid.

    I bought the living world purple and grey carrier recently. Haven’t had to use it yet though as I’m still in the research/purchasing stage and don’t have a hamster yet. Hopefully my future hamster doesn’t break out of it, but I probably will always travel with someone else when transporting them so I’m not tooooo worried. 😅

    I have the first one and the second one. Not a huge fan of the second one due to the tiny top and how hard it is to put it back together once you disassemble. I like the first one because i can leave it in the playpen with the side door open for my hamster to explore

    Nice review. I actually have the you & me large carrier from petco I got it at my job I am a manager at a thrift store so it was $1 I use for my rats when it’s free roam time so I don’t have to walk back and fourth to the cage the only issue I have with it the rats can easily pop the door open but then again it’s used so maybe that’s why they donated it

    Hello Munchie and viewers!
    Please be careful! The carrier with burgundy lid (that you talk about on minute 12) is very dangerous.
    My hamster, while standing on his hind legs easily and quite quickly chewed around those ventilation spacings into one big hole and escaped! Unfortunately, those "separators" between spacings on the lid made out of very thin and easily chewable/breakable plastic.

    Mine looks like the living world one bit the ventilation slids on the top are different and I haven't seen living world as a brand in any store here (in Germany). I still don't trust them tho, especially since my Syrian tries to chew her way out through the top and I'm worried that eventually it's gonna break (especially since I use the carrier to get her to her free roaming area)

    They shouldn't have things called starter cages, you shouldn't get a smaller cage because of how experienced you are
