Ricky Gervais, comedian extraordinaire, known for really cocky roles, suddenly goes all childlike and starry-eyed when talking about David Bowie. It's really endearing! :)
+Charsiupao You know..he is human.. and people in general mistaking the truth and straight forwardness as aggression and rudeness. Every time he do Golden Globe for example people taken aback by his " behavior " and viciousness as American celebrities saying..Well..let's take a closer look.. Mel Gibson? was and maybe still a heavy alcoholic who said few things about jews Robert Downey Jr.? was and maybe still a junkie and an alcoholic who spent few tours in the Betty Ford clinic and some time in jail as well.. Charlie Sheen? Do I need to explain any further? Johhny Depp? The Tourist was a flop and a really bad movie. and the list goes on and on.. Everything he said about those people in his speeches were the truth. He is a normal guy with the traditional British common sense. No wonder he liked Bowie..all normal people do like Bowie :)
+Mikka The British sense of humour is pretty specific to our culture (and perhaps Australia and Canada, primarily because we have such close ties historically). You can see it in the general humour of our nations, it's highly developed sarcasm and absurdity. We're not scared to laugh at ourselves for the ridiculousness of a situation while others find that offensive or rude. Ricky could say anything about anyone, but we understand that the response to an "offensive joke" is part of the joke, while Americans would think it was offensive.
It's strange, made a comment here but it's gone now (still get notification when someone writes here). I've met so many funny and kind English people and comedians who don't build their jokes on others peoples misfortune and then hide behind bullshit like "I'm just telling the truth". That's why I don't really buy the whole 'It's our culture'-thing. I've seen people make jokes at the expense of other people in all cultures. Don't think assholes are more prominent in England?
David Bowie thought Ricky Gervais was hysterical. I think they "got" each other. David Bowie was enormously funny and witty beyond belief. Some folks do not understand that much of what he said was tongue-in-cheek and take it seriously. If you don't get dry wit, incredibly creative, glib and intelligent humor, forget it. The beauty of it is that he was also able to be hugely kind and humane. Not to mention the talent of this gifted lyricist and musician, who gave so much to listeners through his music. He had a very deep soul and was constantly searching for meaning in his life. His music was the only way to express all that he feared and longed for. At least that's how I interpret Bowie's legacy to his fans who are also searching for connection and something *beyond* us to believe in. His great love for Iman, who provided ground beneath his feet and also "got" him, along with his beloved daughter were his gifts to himself and brought beauty and meaning to his life at just the right time and until the end. Too bad he didn't live longer, but I'd say he didn't do too badly. Amazing individual who gave life all he had and was respected, loved and enjoyed by so many in the business. You don't just command that, you earn it.
That he didn't tell his friend that he met David Bowie and Salman Rushdie the night before was really sweet and shows how modest and considerate he is.
So glad he did Extra's. Loved his performance. Still crying 4 days after he passed. He was one of those people i assumed would be around when i was old. R.I.P David
I luv Ricky Gervais and just blows me away that he got to know Bowie as in he was music idol as he was also mine .I can imagine those two hitting it off.Especially humour wise.Luv this story .
"I watched, I laughed... What do I do now?" Lord, that's so freakin' cool! Rest In Peace, David. I wonder if you knew fans would react to your death the way they have...
I like it when Ricky asked Bowie about the music he was gonna write for his part in Extras' 'Can you just do something like Life on Mars?' and Bowie replied 'Yeah I'll just knock out a fucking quick life on mars for ya'
Got to attend a 'winners only' morning time (10 am) acoustic set in 1997 (Bowie and drummer) with question and answer (from questions sent in by the 'winners') that took place at a small bar music venue in Atlanta called Smith's Olde Bar. My friend had won and brought me, the biggest Bowie fan she knew, and we had a great time drinking Irish coffees and grooving to his legendary performance. One of my fondest memories, so cool. Thanks again, Sandra!
Too Cool, always wanted to meet Mr. Bowie..came close , but then you had stuie George and others..but he waived, too cool ! I did get a proper meet with Bryon Ferry, very unassuming-styling and profiling-coming off a commercial flight at Metro airport Detroit-Stopped shook my hand, talked for a minute-gave me a autograph, Pure Class even at 0900hrs in grey plaid suit and tie...very warm fellow....never forgot that..
Getting an audience with David Bowie is probably the closest anyone can get to meeting "A God" let alone the God. He was so extraordinarily talented across so many different mediums - music, cinema, you name it - his loss is irreplaceable, but his art will live forever.
im glad for r.g meeting bowie,,its nice to hear a fan meeting an idol...lucky u rick.,he must of been a fan of u too,he was brill in extras...thanks to u n stephen writing him in...genius.x
Great snippet of Bowie's humor! Hopefully others will come forward and share accounts of what I always suspected, David had a great sense of humor!! :)
+rick kemp Really? and in your infantile dreams your heaven bound right? It's hard to distinguish a troll from a God botherer, at least the Trolls usually are good at winding others up for some recognition/attention from a complete stranger.
I think David could afford his own teeth. He wouldn't need to share a set with Ricky Gervais. Besides, they would have to have dinner at different times.
I admire Gervais quite a lot. In fact, I think The Office, original British version, is the best series ever on TV. And I simply adore Bowie. So, I had to love this video. Shame I could not get all words as I am Brazilian and my English is not that good. Of course, I don't know how to pronounce Bowie correctly.
+Christobanistan It is a matter of taste, I think. I tried to see the American version but it just didn't have the same feeling, let alone the magic. It lost exactly what I liked in the British version: the amazing hu mour.
Very charming vignette. Did not know he was a mentor. Bowie releases his final recording on his 69th past Friday. Ricky hosts last night and then he is gone. RIP to David Boooie.
I met David Bowie at a party in London in the 60's before he was famous. He sat in the corner and scowled at everybody. He didn't give me the time of day. Everyone there said he was too full of himself and had some delusions of grandeur that one day he would be a famous rock star. I learned something that day. To put yourself on top you have to push everybody underneath.
I read a biography of Bowie in which he is portrayed as someone who had an enormous drive to be famous from a very early age. It did, in fact, take him a long time to break through. I do think he was very pretentious, but he was also very, very talented, and talent matched with drive cannot be ignored.
Bowie began assuming that title years prior, before he hit 50...saying that he and the others who have put in their due diligence already, were no longer Rock ‘Stars’- that that was a title which then belonged to the newer/younger bunch, and they had all sorta graduated in status and age to Rock’Gods’. Brilliant term since now I’ve heard many of the others from his era- now referring to themselves as the same (w/o any reference of Bowie beginning it)😐 Heaven must be an even MORE wonderful sounding place now with Bowie’s addition. Our loss was heavens gain.🤗 Now it has Mercury, Ronson, Wright, Prince, Michael,...and even poor Michael Hutchence. Losing Bowie tho, was like losing a close relative, as well as, losing part of ones own soul. We didn’t have to know him personally since he somehow seemed to have known each of us personally. And Still...boy oh boy- what most of us would do to have him back...😳🤗 ❤️🙏✝️❤️✌️

+Charsiupao that's true, but man his (Ricky's) self promotion is in turbocharge here too innit? Not that there's anything wrong with that
You can clearly see it meant the world to him when he got to meet his idol. David Bowie on Extras was fantastic bet Ricky loved every second of it.
"David Bowie - Rock God".
Says it all, really.
1947 - 2016 R.I.P.
Now its "David Bowie immortal rock god", he just went up a level.
Anton Morris :: He "stepped aside"...
The David Bowie scene on 'Extras' was the best of the entire series....Thank you for all the great music David...
Pug! Pug!

Well said Gail...
Thanks, bro. Sure do feel it today....
"His music was the only way to express all that he feared and longed for" LOL.. What the hell are you talking about
So beautifully said....
I wish i'd said that!!
Not many people can can get away with proclaiming themselves a Rock God. David Bowie is one of them.
"I watched. I laughed. What do I do now?" The awesome, brilliant cool of a rock god.

+tysyn c isn't the internet amazing. today we've learned that there are different timezones in the world.
Mike Edwards, Love your profile pic. I'm a huge fan of William Powell. He played some brilliant roles!
That he didn't tell his friend that he met David Bowie and Salman Rushdie the night before was really sweet and shows how modest and considerate he is.

Awe. Some. And yes, David Bowie was and still is a Rock God. RIP David. 😢
"I have a proper job. ROCK GOD".
And the world lost the Rock God forever on January 10th, 2016.
The Master!
Its hard for people outside England to understand what a loss he was to us. Bowie was part of our lives growing up, and more
And Scotland actually !
I do understand. My family loved him too. He was a good and gifted man. Sacramento, CA
Trust me a lot more people than you might think felt the same way outside the British isles too and still do.
That made my day -- Love you David !!! Missing you more and more each day .
Something about it makes you feel all warm inside. Two awesome people being buddies.
Gervais' mannerisms and facial expressions are actually quite similar to Bowie...it's quite remarkable.
I love how he says "Bowie" almost like the correct way to say it
Got to attend a 'winners only' morning time (10 am) acoustic set in 1997 (Bowie and drummer) with question and answer (from questions sent in by the 'winners') that took place at a small bar music venue in Atlanta called Smith's Olde Bar. Thanks again, Sandra!
Goodbye Starman....missed but not forgotten x...RIP
I love the idea of Ricky and Bowie as pen-pals.
Once a Rock God, always a Rock God.
This was so much fun to watch and listen.....Thank You sallyryan19 for posting! Cheers

Ricky has Bowie's 80's teeth.
Not the late 90's and 2000's and up.
He got new ones then, it was impossible to miss.
A brief 'hello' from Bowie @ a club in Hawaii, 1977. He got up and did Golden Years...fantastic!!
thanks for that anecdote - wonderful from us that are still hurting
.. rock god. And in his spare time, the glorious goblin king. Rest in peace, magical man.
I love Ricky and will always love David, may he RIP.
I saw extras with Ricky and david on television it was really good rip dear david
"I have a job. *David Bowie* - Rock God." #FarkYeah #RipBeautifulSoul 😘😢
R.I.P David. I think he is Ricky's biological father. They look very similar.
+LostClayProductions Look up Ricky's 80's band Seona Dancing here on CZcams. His singing voice is weirdly similar too.
+Miles Quatermass his fat twin!
+Mista Blista - that is an uncanny resemblance.
+Miles Quatermass yea, probably inspired by him :)
Brilliant!! we have so much in common Ricky, our love for the musical genius of Bowie, our love for animals and our atheism.
David Bowie was excellent on Extras. It was hilarious.
This is absolutely lovely.
I can't get this song out of my head now.
Great snippet of Bowie's humor! Hopefully others will come forward and share accounts of what I always suspected, David had a great sense of humor!! :)
Brilliant...what a tribute...god bless
that is a great story ! so glad ricky shared it.
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
First few seconds! Check check check! Love it!!!!!!🤣
The first 31 seconds of this were priceless.
The 'rock god' who had a sense of humour.
This really made me happy.
I saw David Bowie on his 57th birthday in Cleveland. A great show!!
This is one of the best anecdotes involving celebrities out there.
Ricky Gervais is the best thing to come out of England since i dont know what!!!
Talent in spades
Yeah, Bowie sounds about right
rick kemp you must be a nasty little man that hates everyone, what a sad timid little man you must be
+rick kemp Really? and in your infantile dreams your heaven bound right? It's hard to distinguish a troll from a God botherer, at least the Trolls usually are good at winding others up for some recognition/attention from a complete stranger.
Worth rewatching Bowie's amazing scene on Extras (as well as the whole series)!!!
Beautiful!
I thought this was really cute!!
Funny...I always think of Bowie's teeth when I look at Gervais. To me they have the same teeth.
I think David could afford his own teeth. He wouldn't need to share a set with Ricky Gervais. Besides, they would have to have dinner at different times.
"David Bowie, ROCK GOD...." 😂😂 AWESOME!!!
I really miss you David
The kind of proper job only David Bowie or Freddie Mercury can have, "Rock God". RIP
+Fritz D I like to think they're both up there now, jamming together and putting on the best concert. :)
David Bowie 58- Rock God. Indeed.
"Rock God" was still being modest
+Fitzy597 True that, he was way more quotable than any deity.
back here 2 years later. never been on top comments before.
thanks
Can’t explain in a few words, so suffice it to say, I love this man. Seems contrary to my personality but I do.

He is the rock saviour!!
David Bowie is a reason why I'm still strong enough to face my school 🙂
Luv Ricky and David Bowie
What a great story. Loved hearing it. and Bowie signed it right. True Rock God. #BOWIEFOREVER Jan 17, 2016
Lovely monarch butterflies on opening sequence
Very charming vignette. Did not know he was a mentor. Bowie releases his final recording on his 69th past Friday. Ricky hosts last night and then he is gone. RIP to David Boooie.
This is so sweet, cause you know Ricky genuinely idolizes Bowie...I wonder if David Attenborough would be my pen pal?
I met David Bowie at a party in London in the 60's before he was famous. He sat in the corner and scowled at everybody. He didn't give me the time of day. Everyone there said he was too full of himself and had some delusions of grandeur that one day he would be a famous rock star. I learned something that day. To put yourself on top you have to push everybody underneath.
Yep that seems to be the way it's done since the beginning of man.
Thanks for sharing this.
Egomaniac. So what? You can still get hit by a car.
wow. i envy your ability to learn the secret of succes just by someone's opinion on someone you don't know and who maybe had a bad day.
I read a biography of Bowie in which he is portrayed as someone who had an enormous drive to be famous from a very early age. It did, in fact, take him a long time to break through. I do think he was very pretentious, but he was also very, very talented, and talent matched with drive cannot be ignored.
This pug face will always be playing his office part
Love that intro! :'D
Ricky has David bowies email, now that's a flex
I fucking love his starstruckness...
haha FUCKING LEGENDARY
goosebumps today!
Love this!
Love it. Great story about the email exchange 😎
You say poe-tay-toe, we say Bow-wee.
I think Bowie was channelling a bit of David Brent in the “Rock God” comment. Having just watched The Office series.
I find this man one of the most ordinary people who has ever been on our screens and this monologue shows how very ordinary he is.
DAVID BOWIE: ROCK GOD. Yes, yes he is, and always will be.....
OMG I love it how giddy Ricky is xD he's like a boy :D
Ummm he's not mispronouncing it actually, it's called AN ACCENT!
shame he couldn't say his name correctly for such a big fan
Nice story, RIP David.
That was brilliant.
little chime loop at the beginning and end which is a fraction of a beat out of time:
FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
