DIY Modern Koi Pond Update After 3 Years

  • Many people still ask me about the pond my son and I dug in the backyard 3 years ago. It's still going strong and we love it as much or more than day 1. I do have a better filter now and the water is crystal clear. This past winter never really got cold and we grew some crazy hair algae for the first time ever. It was really clogging the pump and the filter was barely getting any flow through it. I drained it about halfway and pressure washed most of the walls and rocks in the pond. It's been flawless since. We are not looking to expand the pond or add a second one right next to it.

      I'm not knowledgable enough at the fish stuff to really keep at it. I just have been sharing my experiences. But overall it maintains itself when it's working right.

    Bottom drains are not an opinion they are a standard in the industry. just look at how ponds are created in Japan where it all started. bottom drains never leak if they are installed correctly.

      If I had a huge swimming pool sized pond, I would use a bottom drain. The setup with the bubblers to lift debris has worked really well for me since installing it.

      I'm going to work on it. I have sold or re-homed most of my fish and had a tragic problem with my Ranchu tank (guessing someone got chemicals on one of my brushes somehow....as they all died after a tank cleaning) :( My Koi pond is now my main focus. That and my son's turtle.

    Have the eggs hatched yet or did you have no luck with them ?

    You really need a bigger filter on that pond

    • @hooktherapy

      This filter is bigger than the original one I had installed. Seems to be keep it pretty clear. This has a larger UV and moves a lot more water through it every hour .

      Creative Fish Studio It’s NOT about “clear” water, it’s about removing ammonia and nitrite, the fish waste which will eventually poison your fish!
      Too many fish and too much water for that “TOY” filter!
      Watch some “Proper” koi videos or read some books, my pond is a similar size and my filter holds around 400 gallons!
      As they grow those fish are going to be swimming in their own urine and faeces because that filter is not capable of removing it all from your pond!

      I’ll have to look tomorrow. The stones themselves are large rectangle pieces. I’ll look at the pump tomorrow

    ANY LUCK ON THE EGGS ? Did they hatched?

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 3 lety

      No. I put it back in the pond....and believe it or not, I saw one little baby koi in the pond yesterday. Usually they or the eggs get eaten...but at least one manage to survive. I was happy to see that after I found one of my older koi back behind the pond. Not sure if a predator pulled him out or if he jumped. Didn't seem to be any marks on him....so I think he jumped and then flopped behind the pond. So I'm glad there is new life
