The Asus ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme) might very well be the best gaming handheld in 2023. After 6 months, software has gotten better, and the overall performance has gotten more stable. I love the 7-inch 120Hz VRR display, I love the Armoury Crate software, and everything the Ally just feels so polished. The only downside is that the battery isn't the best, the microSD slot tends to fry cards which I don't think will get fixed until a proper redesign happens, and the joysticks aren't Hall Effect joysticks to prevent stick drifts. Besides that, gaming on the ROG Ally is pretty much perfect.
My recommended power settings for the ROG Ally:
    TDP: 15W
    CPU Boost: Turned On
    Battery Power Mode: Efficiency
Games should be set at 900P at low-medium settings if you want constant 60 frames per second. Some games tend to play better at 25W but battery will drain a lot quicker.

What can i say about the Ally, the only issue i had was the Micro SD not working, but added an 2 tb 2280 and with all the updates this thing is amazing, rock solid performance either 15w or 25/30w, the new 900p mode is a game changer, everything looks and runs amazing, well above 60fps at 15w, 25w an extra 15-20fps depending on the games, the hand-held pc itself feels amazing in the hand, added the Spigen case this just feels rock solid, either Resident Evil Franchise, Halo Infinite, The Last of Us Part 1, Crysis Remastered Trilogy, damn this little machine does it all, and mostly no need to add low settings, mostly mid-high runs great.
To me ? The Ally is far better than the Steam Deck, 15w isn't enough in some of the heavier titles like tlou, re4 remake etc you can really see the deck struggle, even though I would love to see a beautiful oled screen on the Ally but i think the higher resolution and refresh rate make up for it, probably best in class for an LCD screen, the Ally just does it all better at a higher resolution and frame rate, still praise the Deck for it's better battery life

I love my Ally, but I don't hear people talking about the triggers or sticks having issues. My triggers got squeaky after a couple months, so I had to open it and lube the springs with chapstick. I then noticed the rubber trigger stops had fallen out, so I had to glue some pieces in myself. Then I noticed my left analogy stick was getting ground out of shape by the LED ring, so I had to open it yet again to wrap the stick shaft in capton tape.
It's great now, but I'm surprised I don't see people talking about these issues.

I done the ssd upgrade and there isn't any trouble with mine. Unless you don't know what your doing of course but I follow what other youtuber said to do I have upgraded mine ssd to 2TB 2280 instead because the ssd is cheaper. If you want to go the easy way you will to get a 2230 ssd M.2 which is more expensive. If you want to get the cheaper 2280 ssd M.2 you will need to buy an adapter for the Rog ally.

Not really. I have both ally and Steam deck, overall i say the deck has the best software optimization & that means it's the best fit handheld gaming. The ally is good for docked gaming, but windows 11 is annoying. The only thing the ally has is more power, still with my deck i found myself playing the same games at the same tdp and having a better time. I believe their updates to the armory crate adjusted the fan curve to prevent this issue. sadly time will tell. but if you are worried about it still you can just set a manual fan curve yourself to prevent it from getting hot running at 30. personally i still went the route of only putting steam games/roms on the sd card that i run at 10 watts. figured if it was running at 30watts already having it read and write to card constantly would add to the heat(even if only minor) but its to early to tell for me. so far the cards still running great though.

How does the gaming power compare to Xbox Series X and PS5?
Man, I love the design of this thing, but the removable controllers of the Legion Go make it SUPER appealing. I was playing my switch in bed all day the other day when I was sick, and after about 45 minutes, you have to go to your side because you get tired or you just need to change positions. So it’s awesome on the switch to just remove the joycon and prop up the switch against a pillow and then use the controllers under the covers. If I can’t do that with the Ally it’s going to make this thing a lot less portable for me. Too bad the Legion is so gigantic. I think I’m just going to buy both of them one at a time and try them out on my own. Then I can decide which one I like better. Too bad the battery life is going to be awful no matter what I do. If I’m in bed sick again, I’m going to have to just play with a cord plugged in. Which kind of sucks. I was late to the party and got my Ally just a couple of weeks ago, fully updated. So I missed all the fatal flaw-bugs everyone was talking about. So to me, this is awesome in "almost" every way. Here are my things that are somewhat bothersome (for anyone thinking of getting it):
    - Controls: I have big hands and the buttons are somewhat small to me. They joysticks feel "off" in a weird way. Not like a Dual Sense or Xbox Controller. Doable though.
    - Small hard drive: Sure you can upgrade it. But that is another costly option. I will do it in the future but again, it will cost you extra.
-Windows 11: I would rather go for Windows 10. This is a personal preference. It really doesn't matter to you unless you are grumpy about it like me.
    - Screen optimization: When you are navigating around in Windows 11, it is REALLY small. It bothered me more than I thought it would. There is no optimization for it either. Just just have to deal with it.
OBVIOUSLY it doesn't play games in ultra settings. But if you play it on the handheld screen, I assure you that it won't matter. I can barely see any difference between 720 and 1080, let alone the difference between medium and high graphic settings.

Go for it. I was within the same boat as well. I have purchased a steam deck in August. I liked it at first, but when trying to play certain games that requires the use of Xbox game pass, that became an issue. I have tried maneuvers on how to run Xbox game pass within the steam OS without the attempt to install windows, and it was a total mess in my opinion.
Trying to install windows onto the steam deck, I was able to succeed in running game pass, but when trying to use the controllers, I have to install a third-party application (handheld companion) just to get the buttons to work. I have purchased the ROG ally three months later, and that became my daily driver ever since.

I swapped from OLED to lgo to ally. Ally is still a buggy mess. I'm going back to OLED.
I don't know what this creator is talking about. Sleep still doesn't work, randomly turn on after setting to sleep. Sometimes task bar doesn't go away after alt tabbing out of a full screen game and going back in. Sometimes no cursor in desktop mode, with joystick set to desktop, requiring a restart. Sometimes touch screen doesn't work. Display is washed(red is like brown/orange mix), vrr is barely noticeable for me. Lags in persona 5, it's not that heavy, when lgo handled it fine on 1200. And like support is really bad. There is a healthy community though. And battery, omg, is soo bad. I can't take it outside without a power bank on me, it doesn't last long enough.
Lgo, has issues but their support is way better than Asus. They fixed most of the issues talked about by CZcamsrs, and adding in cursor control with joystick next update. It took ally months to get where it is but lgo I feel as though already caught up. It's still bulky, and removable joycons don't feel study. Has really good display but too large and unwieldy, and fps mode is gimmicky. Battery still shit. It has a working sleep mode. Community is not there yet, though.
If you want windows handheld wait on it or go for lgo. See their updates, i think lgo is more polished over the ally. Or you know you can try both and return whichever you don't like, both have 14day return. I'm going back to OLED.

While I understand there are people who never play away from an outlet and want to grab a hub/dock and an external monitor, but those same people would often be better suited to a powerful laptop.
Raw power is not the most important thing. Again, the ally can see UP to 50% more power in high wattage mode than the steam deck, while having an hour of battery life. The deck meanwhile has 50% better battery life at 15 watts which is how many people will play this thing.
