  • That's right, you heard it here first folks! In a drastic change of opinion, a turn of coat, a misdirection of the heartful, I've changed my perspective (read: decided to confirm both sides of a debate) in this weeks video. Let's dive into the ROG Ally's screen, processor and details and see how it really stacks up against Valve's Steam Deck OLED, and even the Steam Deck OG in several cases. Glad you're here fam!

Both are great in their own right. I personally sold my Steamdeck og and bought an ROG Ally, as i wasnt too impressed with the decks power. Never had to deal with the SD card issues with the Ally, as i upgraded to a 2tb SSD. Overall super happy with the ally ^^

@@JDabz96 Strange argument there buddy :D It's funny though, if you mess with the settings, you can closely match the SD in power / time. The SD does a lot at lower numbers no doubt, it's impressive, but once you move past 15w, it gets manhandled.
I love the simplicity of SteamOS, but considering the SteamOS can't even play half of my Steam Library... yah... I'll stick to my glorified laptop, the Legion Go, that can play my ENTIRE Steam and Game pass libraries, not to mention all of the other platform's worth of games. I also don't care if I have to play plugged in, I only use it in my house anyways.
All of these devices have pro's and con's, nature of the beast. Or, you can put windows on the SD :p I have grown to hate Win11 a lot as of late, but sadly it's still the best OS if you have a lot of games scattered about.

@MrNickpeck36 what do you mean half your steam library? No matter what, only like 10% of all steam games dont work on steam deck, and that's counting all the certain anticheat games mostly, and then I also play all my games on epicgames as well, no problems, the only thing you got right was that it was outpowered above 15w. Steam OS will be superior to windows for gaming once compatibility isn't a issue, otherwise, most gaming on the steam deck is as easy as clicking play.

I have both and I stopped using the ally after I got the oled.
    3 reasons:
Oled screen and HDR is a bigger deal in person.
Quick resume. I’m tired of waiting a minute for my ally to turn on and then another 3 mins to get into a game. And guess what, doing that you lose 3-5% of the battery.
Last but definitely not least. I can get 3.5 hours of god of war on the oled deck. 70 mins or less on the rog ally.

One reason I'm a PC gamer is I'm not bound to a single piece of hardware. I much rather play triple A titles on my gaming desktop hooked up to my 65" Oled TV. Games that requires a large screen yet doesn't required newer hardware I rather play on my 17" gaming laptop. Those PC games that my gaming desktop hardware would be overkill and doesn't require a large screen are the games I find works the best for a PC handheld. Hades is a good example. Dead Cells even looks better on a smaller screen then on my 65" screen.
Those games runs well on the Deck with longer battery time. The one thing I want from my wireless devices is for them to be wireless. Battery life is very important to me when it comes to wireless devices.

My SD OLED randomly stopped reading my SD card at start up. I’d have to eject and insert it. Than it randomly wouldn’t let me turn WiFi on. After a few restarts it let me turn on but it wouldn’t connect to wifi or my hotspot. Even when I knew the password was correct and no other devices had issues connecting to it. Sometimes it would work with multiple restarts. I’m talking 20+ I went a week one time without being able to connect to WiFi. Decided that was enough and sold it to get the Ally as with a 2tb name. Which I’ll add is extremely easy to swap. I don’t mind the weaker battery as much since I typically wouldn’t let my SD get under 60%. So it could have a full charge if I ever had to take it out.

five things that annoys me about rog ally:
poor battery life, sd card exploding, windows jank and it's uncomfortable to hold with its sharp edges piecing through my palms and I'd probably miss the instant resume function of the steam deck for that pick up and play ability
three thing that annoys me about steam deck:
    incompatibility with some pc games
lack of performance when I want to play the latest and greates aaa titles
    lack of vrr
Both are great devices and competition breeds great handhelds I feel like we are in a golden age of gaming now.
I'm a OG deck owner by the way for perspective
I mostly prioritize battery life over performance because I feel like steam deck is peformant enough but if I didn't have my series x to remote play in I don't think I can play acts 2 and 3 very well in balders gate 3.
last point. about battery life. I play mostly at home but I hate playing plugged in. There's something about being plugged in while gaming that makes it feel like not a handheld maybe i'ts the lack of freedom of movement. In 5 - 6 years time though the battery will naturally degrade a lot so plugged in all the time is what it will be like for all handhelds that old.

The only thing the ROG Ally has over the Steam Deck, is over all performance
Higher resolutions on handhelds is just cringe. It's great if it can handle all games at 1080p and still reach that rly high (for a mobile gaming device)120hz, but it can't. You're dropping it down to 720p anyways and cranking the W up to like 25. Getting like 45m-90m of battery life. Not much of a handheld, is it?
I think going for full performance and higher resolutions on a handheld, especially when battery tech and hardware isn't all that impressive, is just dumb. Pure greed. Poor handheld design choice
With the lack of a touch pad and a proper handheld OS, I think the Rog Ally is just under developed and poorly designed. Especially with the SD card placement and the use of RGB, as if the battery life wasn't alrdy the biggest issue
It seems rushed and/or not given a lot of thought. Just throwing on Windows and slapping on higher specs like they're trying to 1-up the Steam Deck, but they're inefficient in erry other possible way
The ROG Ally is definitely ahead of its time. With it's hardware and screen res, with the battery quality, they're getting ahead of themselves. You HAVE to keep it balanced. If you're going to put in these specs, you better also put in a battery that can keep up with it, or else you're better off building a stationary gaming rig as you'll be tethered to the wall anyways
    Again, poor design choices
    --
The Deck is an extremely well designed handheld with excellent power efficiency. It can handle any game better than the ROG or LeGo at 15W or less, to give you an idea. Valve knows what they're doing when it comes to making a proper handheld. Packing in enough performance without neglecting the main feature of a handheld, Battery/portability
Ally and LeGo are like meatheads in comparison, designed with the greedy push for performance with the semi-neglection of battery/portability purposes. They're not unique or different from erry other PC handheld that ever existed prior to the Deck

I love the Steam Deck layout/ergonomics, as well
As someone who prefers the Xbox/Nintendo layout (left stick symmetrical with buttons, better ergonomically), but also makes use of the Dpad in JRPGs (turn based games, and general menu navigation), the Deck is REALLY good
I loathe Sony's retarded errgonomics. But making use of the Dpad/ABXY in a comfortable symmetrical layout (like on my SN30 Pro SE) makes it pretty nice when playing my JRPGs
The Steam Deck offers the best of both worlds!

I understand you and others enjoy the track pads, though they are not essential for many. When playing games with a controller it's not like I hold an Xbox controller and say where's the track pads? And for navigating the os I feel you just get efficient with whatever you use. Non issue navigating windows with a joystick and a touch screen for me.

    @TP015657 Před 5 měsíci

Problem with the ALLY is it is tied to windows, that brings with it the good and bad, for a handheld, windows is just not up to par.
One of the biggest reasons to get the deck is the quick resume, i can literally pick and drop the deck in an instant without downtime in between, a godsend for someone with a busy life. Windows on the other hand is infested with random wake ups, slow sleep/resume that mostly does not work on games and drains battery on every attempt as well as countless prompt boxes for everything is a bundle of hassle to deal with.
I believe Windows will be an amazing contender if they made a handheld friendly version/mode that is de-bloated, this is coming from a person running windows on the main desktop gaming rig, which is a boon if you use remote play/steam link/moonlight to stream AAA games locally on the SD for 11+ hours on battery with 120+ fps (close to no input lag) with maxed out graphics/resolution (just get a decent AC/AX WiFi router), to be fair, the ally can do the same with streaming but it lacks battery life, quick resume, OLED and is more expensive.
Lastly, I'm a big fan of the Playstation controller layout and despise the alternative so this one is subjective.

The ally is a great handheld when you compare it to the steam deck until you remember it costs $700 for the extreme and let’s face it nobody should waste money on the non extreme. And the steam deck starts at $400 and goes up to $650. So in terms of pricing I’d sure hope the ally does more than the deck. And I think with the e current pricing the steam deck is gonna still dominate besides being less powerful. Just look at the switch for example.

I love this review. If i am camping or car trip only, I take the steam deck to have a console, if i am going on a vacation/trip/cruise, i take the Lgo. Steam deck is for poor people, and only the OLED matters in any comparison at all. In fact the best summary I have seen among all the content creators who actually have all three is this, they rate #1 Lgo, #2 Ally, #3 Deck. And every content creator who ever says Deck is best, only ever have two to decide from in front of them, and its the lower model ally or Lgo 😂 so their opinions are vastly misled. And always limitedly (or ignorantly) do they choose the steam deck. BUT the real life summary is this: Deck is merely a portable console, not without it's lower performance and hiccups, the Lgo is like a premium gaming PC on the go. And ally is like a solid but smaller work/office/gaming device in one. All are good at gaming. The other two are way better to be able to either 1, do much more, or game eligantly (as far as the Lgo goes).
Me personally, I like the OLED deck best, not bc of its performance or junk resolution, and its limited options, but bc of the brand itself, and like the Lgo either equal to it. But if I am leaving on a trip prolonged, ill take the Lgo to do more.

Unless you’re in a situation where you travel a lot, I don’t see the point in getting an ROG Ally. If you care about power and flexibility, I think you’d be better off just getting a desktop with Windows. At least then you won’t have to worry about a battery. To me, the Steam Deck OLED sounds like a much better option simply because of the increased battery life, which is important for any portable device. Also, as much as I like Windows, it just seems too inconvenient to be used on a handheld. I like the console-like layout of SteamOS better. But hey, to each their own I suppose.

You don't use proton like that you clown, maybe for specific games but otherwise steam os has proton 8 built into it, you don't even need to mess with proton at all, and the steam deck was already proven to have better battery life than the ally, and on top of this the steam deck oled has a 25% bigger battery in it, and if you think 30-40fps on a handheld is bad then you should look at consoles who locked there games to 30fps on big tvs, 30 fps feels great on a 7inch screen, same with 40, most games i play are at 60fps unless it's a newer triple a title then I go to 45fps, which feels almost exactly like 60, the fact you think you need 120hz for a handheld is honestly pathetic, steam deck will always be winning this handheld game, 10 out of 10times. I've had all three (both steam decks and the ROG). The OLED is the only one still here. Except for the first point in this video the rest you mention are utter nonsense.
Windows alone is a good enough reason not to have any windows based gaming handheld. It's terrible on a handheld. The power is irrelevant as the 1080p screen leaves you with similar frame rates to the 800p SP. Battery is a joke on the ROG. I had the SD issue and had to send it for repair. They should have all been recalled purely for this design flaw. The thumbsticks are far too loose feeling, the dpad is hypersensitive. The 1080 screen is slightly too.small so text can be extremely hard to read. It feels more a prototype than a finished device.
Its the best of the windows devices, but the list of downsides compared to the OLED is so much longer than vice versa.

Launchers: Ah yes. Because the minor inconvenience to get a launcher to work (even though there are a million step-by-step guides on youtube), is totally worth the continual and regular hassle of operating windows with a controller, and the tedium that is the Armoury Crate, that Asus can't even get consistent (and has been neglected at times) on laptops. /sarcasm.
APU: None of these handheld devices can get stable and consistent 60FPS on Elden Ring even with lowering the resolution to rune scape graphics. Until that happens at a reasonable resolution for the screen as a bench mark: No One Wins, this doesn't matter, stop pretending your slight bit of performance gives you anything substantial and worth while. Even if you could make some sort of objective argument here; it's paying significantly more for and average of 5-8FPS.
Controller: Super subjective. and this is anecdotal but my wrists cramped a fuck ton more with the ally... Admittedly I do like the Ally's D pad and it's placement in games, but it sucks for desktop which I think is the more functional need.
Screen: I never owned the original Steam Deck, I started with the ally. But after getting the OLED I couldn't go back. I wanna say this is subjective, but I'd take a nicer display over one with technically better specs when you're still not even hitting my Elden Ring bench mark to begin with, and every other title looks better on OLED.
Flexibility from the OS: Yeah, this is why I bought the Ally to begin with (along with my expectations of performance), and will say that yes; This is a genuine superiority, even if I dismiss all the problems that come with windows (the updates are so intrusive)... Getting something to run that requires MS Gothic that proton didn't want to resolve was *particularly* annoying on steam deck. And anti-cheat stuff is also pain. (though I think it's a blessing in disguise to disallow kernel level anti-cheat, which is something that should be abolished.) But practically most things people use day to day either are fixed by proton, or have a linux version. If you absolutely hate tinkering, the flexibility is the one thing on this list I can say is objectively superior. But that's far from a deal breaker.
Over all in practice I found ROG Ally better for game pass, very well optimized first person shooters that take advantage of the hardware (which if I'm being honest I want a mouse and be seated at a desk for anyways), and running very very niche things that really only play well with windows.
For literally everything else, I found my OLED Steam Deck superior and much better value. My cousin got my old Ally at a super reduced price, so they are happy; but I think any savvy consumer who isn't supper addicted to single player shooters, and want it everywhere they go; should sleep on the Ally.
