  • How to make a DIY Adjustable Firepit Grill (aka a Santa Maria style grill)
    In the video I'll show how I used an old foldable camp grill as the foundation for an adjustable wood fire powered grill. From creating the custom chain crank mechanism to welding the frame and grilling platform.... and finishing it all out by grilling some Butcherbox Grass-Fed Ribeye steaks at the end! Hope you Enjoy! -Joe

    As a Santa Marian, I approve this build. 😉 Usually you'd use a braided stainless steel wire instead of chain, but I doubt it matters. If you want Santa Maria style BBQ, make sure you use red oak for your coals, and linguica sausage to start the grill as your appetizer. Bon Appétit

    Nice. I've used one of these grills in Cali. You'll never be satisfied with any other once you've used one. Total control of your grilling. I'm trying to design and build one right now,
    with no welding skills, and a huge heavy restaurant grill I found. The bigger the wheel, the easier it is to move the grill.
    Add: that is very nice work!

    FYI: from Wikipedia- Santa Maria-style barbecue is a regional culinary tradition rooted in the Santa Maria Valley in Santa Barbara County on the Central Coast of California. This method of barbecuing dates back to the mid-19th century and is today regarded as a "mainstay of California's culinary heritage.
    Santa Maria-style barbecue centers on beef tri-tip, seasoned with black pepper, salt, and garlic before grilling over coals of native coast live oak, often referred to as "red oak" wood.”

    Regarding those who recommended red oak. For those not from California, it's costal live oak. Not the red oak most of the US is familiar with. It is uncommon to find it outside of California because there are many local laws prohibiting the movement of cut oak in an attempt to limit spread of diseases.
    I do recommend an oak though, it's my favorite wood to cook with.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  Před rokem +1

      I will definitely use oak as well. But most of it cooking is going to be AZ live oak and mesquite since they are both plentiful here….especially the mesquite. It’s the weed of trees here😂

    • @craigs831
      @craigs831 Před rokem

      @@homesteadonomics I know the AZ white oak is great to cook with, simular to the post oak popular in Texas cooking. Same white oak family.
      California live oak being in the red oak family, why we just call it red oak. If you ever come across any type of red oak, save some scraps for bbq. The flavors would be similar to the "authentic" flavor of a Santa Maria bbq. It's worth trying at least once!

    Good to know about the meat too. I’ve recently started ordering from Freshlys. So far they’ve been great. They may seem expensive, but they’re actually saving me $. I’m no longer feeding the family last minute dinners from a fast food place or local restaurant (which I was doing wayyyy too much), and I’m not tossing a good chunk of food we never had time to cook. Let’s just say my chickens eat well 😂. It also cuts out impulse shopping.
    I sound like an advertisement, but I’ve been impressed with them! And they have made my life so much easier!

    I absolutely love this! And your video is delightfully to the point. What are the dimensions you used for yours?

    Love the video and great idea, inspired me to learn to weld and build my own. One question, if I may, what is the diameter of the round bar you use for the lift mechanism?

    Wow great build. If you can build one three times the size and three times thicker steel I would buy it off you. Let me know if you're interested
