Nice video, David. My fav. Macro lens is the Minolta 100 mm macro, which I bought for 135 euro's. Or I take my beautiful Minolta 50 mm with suspension ring. The 100 mm works best with the Sony LA-4E. Bit expensive, but it can be used on the Minolta 70-210 as well and other lenses with the a-mount.

Thanks for video. I know this is technically a macro lens but i see you taking beautiful non macro pics as well. How would compare this lens to the 35mm f1.8 for all around lens(not macro)… i feel like i could save some money and just get this macro lens… is it a good compromise or the 35mm still WAY better? I haven’t used the 35mm f1.8 but based on the images I got with this lens I doubt there’ll be a huge difference in quality unless you get into pixel peeping territory. One thing to think about though is that extra 2 stops of light the 1.8 offers and if that’s going to make a difference to what you want to shoot. I’d say that if macro is something you shoot a fair bit and you generally shoot in reasonable light that this lens is a good option, but if you want the super blurry backgrounds or are shooting portraits and shooting in more challenging light, then maybe the f1.8 is the way to go🖖
Hey buddy, just watched your video on this lens as I’m contemplating buying one. Still umming and arrring whether to get one or not 🤦🏻♂️. I recently bought a Sony NEX 5 with kit lens, it’s ok as cameras go, but I was looking for another lens to maybe use for street.
I've never actually done any jewelry photography, but as it's a 1:1 macro so you'll be able to get the detail shots. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful 😊
Thanks David - I want a lens for product shots, like watches, is this one suitable? Will the images bend because of the 30mm glass? I heard the best macro lens is around 70mm, but their min focusing distance is quite far. Appreciate your advice!
Well this is an apsc lens so distortion is minimal as it gives an approximate 52mm field of view. I no longer have this lens and instead use a 90mm f2.8 on my canon FF camera. Minimum focus distance of that is around 20cm from the sensor which means your subject can be almost touching the front element. That might be a good lens to consider. Thanks for watching 🖖

I am looking at the 17-70mm 2.8 Tamron too which is reasonably priced with 2.8 aperture, you think that's a better choice for macro(product) photography? Tamron doesn't claim this is a Macro lens, but on their website they do say in detail how this lens is great for close ups.
Of course, but at f3.5 on apsc you’re not going to be better that extreme background blur if that’s what you’re going for. For what you described I’d recommend either a 35mm or 50mm f1.8. When I was shooting cars at Silverstone etc. for static shots on full frame I often used a 50mm and 105mm f2.8 macro for the details 👍
If you’re talking about the 16-50 kit lens, it’s fine as a walk around lens but neither fast nor terribly sharp. You’ll get some nice pictures with it, but it’s very cheap for a reason. I had both the 30mm macro and kit lens along with the 55-210 and it’s a pretty decent starting point for the a6000
I think there are better options for full frame to make the most of the full sensor. I'd never recommend using apsc lenses on FF unless it's a very high mpx camera or for video use
This macro lens is awesome. As soon as I got my lens I took some snowflakes pictures and it take great pictures. I love it.

I'm not familiar with that lens, but I personally would always go for a 1:1 macro lens for true macro👍

IS Sony 30mm f/3.5 E-mount Macro compitable with sony a7 iii?
It's an apsc lens so while it will function on the A7iii, it will either force it into crop mode or create a hard vignette👍
