      That's the catch though , a better team would press us and hence ten hags plan would end up working , we lost because wolves managed to be compact without the ball. Whereas city , Liverpool , Arsenal, newcastle, Chelsea, all tend to press higher up the pitch bringing onanas natural skill into play and we can overload the midfield, that's why we struggle against bottom half teams, we need to learn to break down the low block and the this modern lowblock- midblock hybrid.

    Manutd were on the backfoot throughout the game and we barely scraped through with that Varane header. Inexperience was evident in Garnacho's game while Antony was similarly poor on the right. Hard to believe how static our forwards were in the ETH era. Props to Wolves for playing a much better game with their midfield Matheus Nunes executing those beautiful runs, only to be dissapointed by their impotent strikers. Let's hope we train hard and get back in the next fixture!

    Sancho was a big positive. Changed the game when he came on. I don't think Garnacho is ready to start games yet. He looks best as an impact sub against tiring fullbacks. Ten Hag needs to put Rashford back on the left (from where he scored 30 goals last season) and play Sancho as the false 9 which worked so brilliantly against Arsenal during pre-season.

      yes the team's attacks became more fluid when he came on true. But if u look at wolves chances after he was subbed in, the left flank kept getting exposed bc he didn't track back. Shaw was completely outnumbered and overwhelmed at the end bc sancho neglected his defensive duties (and also bc of eriksen's poor man marking)

      I think United should consider a box midfield 4 the way Barcelona do it. Barcelona start Gavi or Pedri wide left on paper but in the game, Balde provides the width & Pedri/Gavi tucks in. Ten Hag should consider starting Sancho on that left side instead of Garnacho so when Shaw overlaps & provides width, Sancho tucks in the central areas where he usually is more comfortable anyway. That also allows AWB to stay back in a defensive 3 where he won’t have much ball playing responsibilities & can focus on transition defense & 1v1s like Walker at City. This setup should be good until they find a striker & Rashford can go back on the left to provide the width & 1v1s strength & switch system. Shaw is a great crosser as well. Inverting him wastes his talent. Lisandro at the LCB is good for dictating play from deep but also carry the ball to create even more overloads & midfield superiority. It also keeps that Diamond play out the back shape they tried against wolves with Onana. Can play out from the back or go long & have bodies around for the second ball. Box midfield of Bruno & Casemiro as the pivots & Mount & Sancho as free 8s. Antony stays wide right.

  • @lucvdveen6387
    @lucvdveen6387 Před 9 měsíci +21

    United's structure was so poor.
    Last season saw us primarily use a 3-2-5 in possession with Eriksen along Casemiro in a 2, pushing Shaw up alongside our front 4. This was very effective because we had Rashford in his favoured left half space and Shaw on the overlap. We have now shifted to a 3-1-6 which in theory works but not with Casemiro as the lone pivot, our right hand side was not press resistant enough with Varane and Wan-Bissaka to resist Wolves' strong wide pressure, forcing us to play regressive balls constantly and killing our tempo. Either Ten Hag needs to drop Bruno/Mount alongside Casemiro to form a 3-2-5 or we need to sign Pavard and Amrabat as rumored to play Pavard RB, allowing us to have Martinez, Varane and Pavard as a three in possession with Amrabat and Casemiro ahead.
    Out of possession our high press was mostly functional but once bypassed our defense dropped too quickly leaving the already outnumbered Casemiro in no man's land. We have to either push the fullbacks and defensive line up to back the press or go back to a mid block, this is chaos and will be exploited by better teams.
    Our game management was also poor, once 1-0 we should have retained much more of the ball instead of looking to counter every attack and killing our momentum. Our box defence also dropped too deep allowing Wolves settled possession on the edge of the box which is crazy, very lucky not to have conceded.
    All around I am very worried and unlike last year this is purely a tactical issue, not a personnel issue. We have the players to thrive. Ten Hag needs to seriously work on our offensive and defensive structures for us to make top 4, nevermind think about a title.

    OK LESSONS:
    we must understand that we need to use rashford as a LW. he wants to dribble towards the target like a modern LW. and his link with shaw. in other hand garnacho played like a little teenager today. no vision, panics and didn't execute his runs. so that means we can't use rashford and garnacho at the same time except if rashford plays on the right which is not his og position again...
    for mount. godness me he was terrible. first half he did well against holding wolves players and cutting through passes but he went into ghost mode on second half. i didn't even see him on the pitch. casse had fitness problems and he can't do it with his own if mount performs like this... can't wait for kobbie mainoo's return actually. if he still good as before. mason will be on the bench this season and idc... we have seen this movie before. and the name of that movie is ah boy doony... he need to learn how to play with bruno or ended up as a new van de beek... and i love donny. just wrong place at the wrong time thingy...

Garnacho was outmuscled and reduced to shooting through numbers, Rashford played too deep to threaten the goal and I lost count of how many times Antony made the wrong choice with a pass. Bruno roamed ineffectually. The ball was slow getting to the forwards but then they wasted every scrap they got.

      I do get that the teams was as a whole poor and the fitness lvls were appalling but if u look at mount he was supposed to be the no.8 like eriksen who gets the ball off our backline,carries it frwrd to bruno or himself,help out case def and not leaving spaces by pushing too far up in bruno's posns and not isolating case. But what he did was just drift off to brunos posns,cause huge holes in midfield and leaving utd vulnerable to counters and 1v2s or 1v3s for case to handle once wolves got past him and bruno. I think mount needs to learn the eriksen role and until that he needs to be benched for eriksen cause we can't play 2 10s with case being the one man mdfld in any case. So all in all mount was the strt of chaos,confusion and vulnerability to utds ideas and attaks.

    we don't have the required fullbacks to invert into midfield to support casemiro and allow mount and bruno to play high. Also that box system by pep requires wingers to hold width so wouldn't suit rashford. We have to find a system which suits the players we have. I believe a 352 in possession would be ideal, RB making a back 3. Shaw pushing providing width allowing rashford inside and casemiro with a more supportive midfield partner.bruno and mount can rotate for #10.

    I was pretty alarmed in pre season with how cavalier our 3-1-6 buildup system is. Its like long ball football and once it breaks down the opposition drived trucks through our midfield. I just thought that was pre season teething but Ten Haag has actually not changed that at all.
    Thusfar the chemistry of Mount and Bruno as flying 8's and Casemerio holding is not working. We need a tempo controller like Erikksen and then a 10 like Bruno or Mount.
    Its only one game but it was shocking how we conceded counter attacks with a coach who values rest defence so highly. We alsl couldnt string any passes together.

    Onana poses a sharp learning curve for UTD in possession playing out; such an able keeper presents options they are not used to but opponents have been seeing from better teams in recent years, esp the the MAIN adversaries, City and Lpool, so clever opponents are already schooled. Disciplined Wolves taught a lesson, that should not be forgotten.
    There is much that can be said, but keeping it short: REALLY knowing and loving your tika and your taka, rather than depending on killer passes from the keeper and also accepting, if not loving, high press to regain possession fast by the forwards AND pitch-length recovery runs by full backs and DMs several times every game bc there will be overturns high up if playing in possession. In other words, the example is right across the city - been there for a while

    For as long as ETH plays with both Bruno and Mount in the midfield United will continue to get overrun. ETH wants a high press, but he isn't going to get it and Casemiro will be totally exposed without much support from the players ahead of him on the park. If Wolves can make United look pathetic, imagine what good clubs will do. We'll regret letting Fred go for practically nothing because he added a bit of bite to the midfield when playing with Casemiro in his back. ETH needs a rethink and will hopefully soon realise that he made a mistake paying too much for Mount who we didn't need in the first place. Unfortunately it'll most likely be the same as with Antony and he'll stick with Mount because he insisted on buying him.

    I think United should consider a box midfield 4 the way varcelona do it. That also allows AWB to stay back in a defensive 3 where he won’t have much ball playing responsibilities & can focus on transitions defense & 1v1s like Walker at City. This setup should be good until they find a striker & Rashford can go back on the left to provided the width & 1v1s strength. Shaw is a great crosser as well. Inverting him wastes his strength. Lisandro at the LCB position where he can dictate play from deep but also carry the ball to create even more overload & midfield superiority. It also keeps that Diamond play out the shape back they tried against wolves with onana. Can still play out from the back or go long and have bodies around for the second ball. Box midfield of Bruno & Casemiro as the pivots & Mount & Sancho as free 8s. And Antony stays wide right.

Personally they need to: 1. reduce their width to close down play in the middle 2. Simplify their build up play 3. Buy more experienced players.(Mount, Onana, Rasmus will not bring success.) Should've bought a proper CF like J David, get Goretzka, and Wojciech Szczesny. J. David suits their play more than Rasmus, especially if you are going to have Bruno and Mason in there at the same time. Goretzka would be an excellent parter for Casemiro to tidy up midfield, and Wojciech is so solid. Onana is like the goalkeeper version of Maguire. Ten Hag looked obviously without ideas by present this starting 11 for the first game of the league. The 11 didn't look a bit like the starters for the rest of the season and the same mistakes were made. Rashford can't be the reference up there, Garnacho needs minutes off the bench and Antony needs to find his form.
    As such, the full backs are way to linear for what Ten Hag wants them to do in his system, while the midfield is too slow and aged for anything related to agility.
    Onana needs time, he's a good keeper, although I think he's a bit small for the Prem.
    Then we have the biggest fault that wasn't addressed in this transfer window: the striker. We desperately needed a striker that can bag United 20 goals per season at least and be a strong powerhouse in the middle. Instead, went with an unproven 20 year old expensive guy because he has a similar name to the top scorer.

    I am more worrried about the fact that ETH didnt correct all these mistakes in game. He just stood there and looked angry like all of us.
    23 shots against us should have been a reason enough for ETH to tell one of Mount or Shaw or AWB to stay back. Go 2-3-5 in their box or 3-2-5. Seems an easy problem to fix in game.
    We were very lucky that Wolves are toothless infront of goal. Against better opposition like with Liverpool or ManCity or Arsenal, we will get smashed.
    This had nothing to do with Wolves being more fit then us. We played more games in preseason than Wolves did. We were at home. Just poor.
    Lastly, i think ETH got the game plan wrong in some ways. We started with a counter attacking team in Garnacho, Rashford, Bruno etc. We needed to be more calm in posession in the first half. Make them run around. Tire them. Then hit them on the break in the second half. Instead we brought on Eriksen & Sancho in the 2nd half (which is what brought us the goal btw). We should have started them.
    Away at Spurs, I would like us to start with the counter attacking team straight away. Guve Spurs the ball. See what they can do with it. They seemed to be very vulnerable in transition in the chanels against Brentford.

    i would like us to play more defensive formation - accept who we are and where we are today in terms of capacity. we will not be able to withstand newcastle, liverpool , arsenal and city which are quick teams

      Exactly! We need to stop with the obsession of pressing. Just accept we can't do it and drop into a low block when we loose the ball.

    So, were the tactics good but just performed badly in this game or are the tactics not good enough?

    • @nananou1687
      @nananou1687 Před 9 měsíci +1

      The tactics were good, but naive. You can't play when you don't have a technically astute DM. Casemiro isn't. So this system will not work

    Ten Hag gets a 3/10 and that’s being generous. Same problem under OLE. yet here we are again

    Wolves limited united the entire game. United and liverpool need to wach out on how they are playing this season. Wolves yesterday lacked goals,others they were a far better side.

    #tenhag, you need a world class striker, said it many seasons ago. wingers are not natural scorers.

    Bruno is not a David Silva or Bernardo Silva who can unlock defences. He's good with countrr attacks only. High time United find a player who can pass against tight defences

  • @ultimateblaze23
    @ultimateblaze23 Před 9 měsíci

    If you want to shut down United, just close off space in center and don't commit to high press, if we have possession we can barely create anything despite having two attacking midfielders. Anothy is totally worthless unless he can cut inside . The formation has to change, Amrobat is not enough, we need to replace Mount with a deep playmaker, this type of suicide formation just is not going to work in the Prem

    I don’t get why we play a 6 and two 10s instead of a 6 and two 8s our players are just so stagnant not looking to create/find space to receive the ball forcing us to pass along the back and go for the useless long ball there is also still no fight to win second balls or ability to put good crosses in the box to the people saying we just need to make signings it’s not that it’s a problem Utd have had for years it’s something Erik and the coaches have to fix in training

      I think the two 10s are supposed to be 8s but it just didn’t work in this particular game cause both Bruno and Mount have the capacity to play as 8s. Also supposedly with two free 8s the fullback is supposed to invert and help the 6 which just didn’t happen at all
