An underlying issue: Lack of ball carriers. The arsenal game was screaming someone with that ability

    • @vaffangool9196
      @vaffangool9196 Před 8 měsíci +1

*Progressive passes* are a reasonable substitute for progressive carries in a direct style of play. Your real problem was shit pass completion in the opposition half. Our 42 touches in the opposition box were more than double your 19, and we completed over three times as many passes in the final third of the pitch (168 vs. 47). Just 12.2% of United’s successful passes ended in the final third-the second-lowest figure put up by United in a League match since that statistic became part of the record in 2006-07.
*Your second-biggest issue* has to be of lack of depth at centre-back. You cannot play a pairing of Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans when your sole style of play (at least against the top sides) is to sit deep, absorb pressure, and counter on the break-especially with so much injury time being added on for the foreseeable.
*In any case,* Bruno, Eriksen, and Rashford are all excellent ball-carriers. Casemiro isn't particularly speedy or creative but he isn't wasteful with the ball, and the addition of Amrabat wil free him to be a traditional six. Onana is obviously good with the ball at his feet, and Martinez feels more like a converted left-back. I'd say it's only your actual left-back, Luke Shaw, ranked in the 46th percentile with 1.97 progressive carries per 90, who is as dreadful as you think (even Wan-Bissaka is in the 79th percentile with 2.81 per 90)-which only serves to reinforce my earlier point: a fit Luke Shaw always gets the start because his 5.31 progressive passes per 90 (82nd percentile) are critical to the direct system in place at United.

I was at the Tottenham match in the home end (south stand) and was seriously unimpressed by United given some of the preseason hype. They pressed well at times but when United had the ball they seemed too far apart from each other particularly in the second half. Maddison had the beating of Casemiro nearly every time. Yes, united did have chances and yes they could have done better with them but they didn't. Now they are under pressure. If Fernandes gets injured it could get worse.

Basically, in order for the 3-1-6 attacking gameplan function properly, there are 2 things need to be achieved at the same time.
    1. De bruyne type of player which United don't have
    2. half space runs (don't have right players to do it)
    3. full backs inverting (progressor like Stones, defensive like Walker)
    To makes things worse:
    1. Leaving Casemiro isolated every game
    2. Player's disasterous positioning on and off the ball
    Solutions:
    1. STOP the 3-1-6 attacking gameplan NOW and deploy defensive backup plan or else 7-0 humiliation incoming for sure

Loved the transition between background music at 3:23. In relation to the tactical analysis, it was spot on as usual. Midfield has been our problem since the opening day at Wolves. Having Casemiro play as the metronome while pushing up Fernandes and Mount leaves us too vulnerable on the counter, especially when those attempted line breaking passes are intercepted. I like Mount, but he's not an ideal partner for Fernandes, who will always be at his best playing higher up the pitch. Thats why having someone like Eriksen partnered with Casemiro at the base of midfield gives us far more balance. Eriksen has evolved into a player similar to Michael Carrick in his mid 30s, not the most physical, but uses his amazing positional sense to find space while controlling the tempo of the game from deep.
Not the best start to the season, but we will surely improve as it goes on.

But his passing ability was over-hyped, as he clearly benefitted from having a very strong Inter Milan defensive unit protecting him. A GK's most important ability is his shot stopping ability. Amrabat is good addition but he won't be able to fix all the issue. When Rangnick said United needs to sign at least 10 new starters to see any improvement, this was not exaggerated. Changing too many managers over past 10 years, each signed players according to their preference lead to next manager inheriting players that cant fit into his system.
With Antony, Sancho, Greenwood drama and 8 injuries less than 5 games into new season, i say we should temper our expectations. Our target should still be top 4 this season, I'd rather see ETH imposing his gameplan into this team.

I think Wan bissaka has done quite well in the right wing. His timing of the runs has got better and his dribbling is very good albeit unconventional.
The problem in first few games was that mount has been invisible with almost zero contributions. When eriksen played, united have controlled games much better.
I think dropping Antony for Mctominay who pairs up with Eriksen as two in the second line of 3-2-5 shape or Amrabat who drops in the first line, allowing Casemiro to play with eriksen in the second line might be the two obvious solutions. Another approach might be playing Sancho on the right wing as a traditional winger and bruno between the lines as Sancho has high schot creating actions and his crossing/passing/link up is much better on the right.

United needed a press resistant, technically brilliant, physical ball carrier capable of receiving the ball in deeper areas of the pitch with his back against the own goal and dribbling(evading) out of pressure and carrying the ball into opponents half of the pitch. Frenkie de Jong archetype of a player, but they couldn't get FDJ after desperately chasing him.
They should've bought someone like Manu Kone, Khephren Thuram, Matheus Nunes, Ryan Gravenberch...
I'm not aware of many more midfielders who are capable of this kind of stuff, but they probably exist, scouting department had to do it's job.
Signing of Mason Mount doesn't make sense to me. Casemiro gets a lot of responsibility in ball progression, and is often isolated, disjointed from Bruno and Mount/Eriksen. Casemiro also has a lot of ground to cover during counterattacks of the opposition so they get overrun easily.
Why Ten Hag gave up on the idea of Frenkie de Jong type of a press resistant ball carrier in the midfield? I don't know and it puzzles me. Basically all the players in United's midfield treat the ball like a hot potato, there is no ball retention. They try to release it as quickly as possible(often searching for Rashford with a deep ball...).

The profile of players needed are not there, from our wing backs to our wingers to a ball carrying midfielder to link the play. Rashford is good and dangerous but does not always look up to release that dangerous ball. The right flank is a dead zone Antony does nothing creative. I think you are spot on with the analysis. The coach is not supported by the management and is forced to keep players he does not really want and that affects the the dressing room. The hope is that Amrabat should fit that midfield role since he has some defensive instincts lacking in Mount and Ericson. Houjland too looked to impact the game and offer an outlet which looked dangerous and it remains to be seen. There is still hope . The playing out from the back is a huge positive because that made united lose so much possession going long with De gea. It's in phases I believe the manager will get a solution soon

United are just using Onana to show teams they can play from the back without any meaningful progression. They beat the first press and then goes back to him to prove a point that he is good with his feet. Also, Ten hag has no clear principles in the final third.

I'd say play Fernandes a bit deeper, closer to Casemiro. Put Mount/ Eriksen in an attacking midfield role. Rashford / Martial on the left, Rashford/ Mount on the right and play Hojlund as a nine. Atleast that is what I can think of so far, unless you have other options/solutions?
Although not his preferred position, I think Rashford can play on the right. I have another solution aswell. Put Amrabat next to or nearby Casemiro. That way you can play Fernandes on the rightwing, Garnacho on the leftwing and Mount as a false nine, which I think he can do.
Option number three may be Amrabat as defensive midfielder, Mainoo next to Amrabat, Fernandes as a 10, Mount on the rightwing and Rashford on the leftwing with Martial as a striker. In summary there are many options to reconsider. Whether ever option is available remains to be seen, that is dependable of injuries and the opponent. Anyway let me know if and when I am wrong.

If you want to play 3 midfielders they have to be compact, not far apart like ten hag tactics.
If we play two pivot the two pivot midfielders they could interchange positions laterally whilst the attacker and cam can change their position, the one on top, coming off deep to collect the and the cam would make a run forward.
We can also implement swap wing tactics, by doing so, making the winger available in the half spaces, rather than wait on the sideline.
If we play 3-1-2-4, everybody seems too static to collect the ball(for the front line). Because the front lines were statically position themselves up front without wanted to drop deep to ask for the ball.

    • @josephark3075

Can’t agree… fluidity of the team is bad, attacking players re too static always hugging the sideline to stretch, with that much gap between players and no fluidity
Ball progression in the final third is so poor and when the ball is lost, recovery seems almost impossible due to the isolation and gap created in the midfield…

United don't score. Antony, Martial and a Rashford played out-of-position are largely toothless up front. United should have won the Tottenham gane. Bruno's no longer interested in staying in midfield. He only wants to play close to the striker, weakening the midfield. With Mount undisciplined to play in a midfield 2, this leaves Casemiro isolated and alone.

Ignoring the old adage ' If it ain't broke , then don't fix it", Erik Ten Hag and the United brass decided to change areas that weren't the areas that needed fixing. United finished 3rd in the table , were in 2 cup finals and won 1 trophy. Statically, the most pressing area of need was in scoring goals. They finished 6th with 58, which was 36 less than City. Yet, according to the data (Fbref) they were tied for 3rd with City in Shots and 2nd behind Brighton in Shots on Target. They had more shots on target than Manchester City yet finished 36 goals behind them. They were in the top 3 in SCA (shot creation) but 7th in GCA (Goal creation). Meanwhile, defensively they finished tied for 3rd in GA and 1st in Clean Sheets. Yet, Ten Hag decided to address the midfield and change his goal keeper and left the most pressing need of improving goal scoring in the hands of 20yr old , 9 goal scorer from Serie A. It was always going to be difficult because by changing the squad with the new signings, they were not going to play as they did last year. I'm all for a Manager having the right to play their "style' of football but there is something to be said for seeing what you have and playing to the personnel strength. Ten Hag did that last year but decide he would rather play to his "style', hence the changes. Logic would dictate that United will not have as good of a year simply because while they are figuring out how they should play, their opposition got better. Certainly Liverpool look better, Arsenal look better, City is City and the likes of Brighton look like a team on the up. United's competition is only getting stronger. It remains to be seen if Ten Hag's desire to change the style of play will bear fruit.

How is he forcing his style on United?

    • @trevg9450
      @trevg9450 Před 8 měsíci

@@amphiphil844 Good question. First we have to be clear on what he means by best team in transition. Ostensively , he's talking about going from defense to offense or visa versa quickly. That involves pressing and ball possession. He changed his GK as was pointed out to help with building up play from the back which can be part of ball possession and ball retention. These are not attributes of a counter attacking team. Counter attacking invloves holding a defensive shape inviting teams on to you and when the opportunity presents itself attack. Think how West Ham beat Brighton who had 79% possession but lost. Or how the Spanish Women's team lost to Japan 4-0 in the group stages. Counter attacking football is best for this team especially with it's two best players in Fernandes (who's always looking for the worldie pass forward) and Rashford(who is best coming at goal on the run where he just has to shoot and not think). There isn't anything wrong with what Ten Hag wants to do, I just think he's changing too quickly. He has a ball playing GK who is good at passing but he's passing to Wan Bissaka or Dalot or Lindelof, etc. He's also going to lose his GK for 1 month during the African Nations Cup which leaves him with a Backup for 4-5 games. Not to mention he could have/should have brought him along when he took over United cause he was on a free then. I just think he and United should have done whatever it took and spent whatever it required to get a consistent goal scorer, which is still their problem. All well and good with all this tactical mumbo jumbo but if they have players that keep hitting the post, heading balls over the net or just missing the net completely, what does it matter if they can play out from the back or win the ball from a press.?

The issue is, like mentioned at the end, AWB is incapable of inverting and Shaw only delivers if he feels pressure to perform due to competition.
I think ideally the 3 at the back wouldve looked like this:
    Todibo- Varane- Lisandro
That ensured that Lisandro can invert and play a bigger role on the ball and Todibo has the capabilities to both cover defensive transitions and carry the ball past opponents and creating space.
I think the role envisaged for Mount was perfect for Kocku would instead moved to Benfica due to ManUtd's dithering. I would prefer for Amrabat to the holding position and for Casimero to to play in Mounts place higher up. That would free him to focus more on scoring just like he did in Madrid with Kroos and Modric.

Brilliant analysis - what I don't understand is why united didn't go for a full back that can invert ? It's almost a necessity. The teams you face in premier league will not allow you to have a true single pivot ... you need inversion and have a 3-2 or a 2-3 build up ...
