every time I'm about to hear a song from Jeff I have to turn the volume up to the top because I want his voice to get into my head and I want him to change all the crap that I have inside, I want his voice to erase all the darkness inside me, and he never fails.

Listening to what he did with the song after having the dream and documenting it on the new album really hits me in the feels. There are many versions of this but for me, this is by far what he truly wanted for the track. His voice resonates so deeply with me as it would the millions of other fans out there. I'm very happy when listening to this song.
I couldn't believe my ears when the 'new' album came out 20 years later .. and didn't include this!!!!!!!? The dream sequence sketch of a song was interesting enough to hear but it was no more than that really :/ we need this!!!!!!! So remaster it, polish it, put a bow on it, do whatever you have to do, but PUT IT OUT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!! What are we waiting for exactly? Also put out Peace Offering and anything else which is still lurking in some vault gathering dust somewhere. COME ON MARY get your act together! Hopefully she can manage it before I actually die of old age, but I wouldn't bet on it.
@@johnarundell7951 If there is one reason for me to get stupidly rich, it'll be so I can just throw money at whoever owns all of Jeff's material so I can polish it, put a bow on it and release it and most of all.....not make a single dime back from it. It should be free to the world and to all those that choose to hear it

Written and recorded on a four-track in Memphis. Amazing.
If this was written in memphis, i wonder why it wasnt on Sketches.. its far better than some of the other demos on that album..
A rough sketch of this song existed at least as far back as 1993, as there is a song on his posthumous album, You And I, called, Dream of You and I. The melody is clearly an early rendition of this and the lyrics include the same refrain: “you and I, you and I, you and I.”
I, too, wonder why this wasn’t included on Sketches. I have always said, that had Jeff lived to record a proper studio version of this, it might have been his magnum opus.

Few songs affect me the way this particular one does. This version. Man...
The way the lyrics are written, it seems like he simply wrote them out very quickly while the thought of his dream was on his memory. A sort of quick expose of his mind and soul.. It's such a personal look, It's wrenching because the words are so pure. Like hes working something out as it's memories are tumbling through his head, there's a very innocent yet sad quality to it.. ah man
this version is so much better than the one that ended up in sketches imo because it still has that rawness and the direct feelings from the dream he had, i feel like the album version had a different story. but every jeff song is a blessing so i will appreciate anything i come across

I've loved this man's music for almost 20 years and am so glad to hear this track for the first time, a lost gem.

To me, the definitive version of You & I (though I love the other performances also). That beautiful buildup and sudden breakup into delicate intimacy in the last verse is nothing short of magical.
Some of the lyrics still feel a bit placeholder. If he had had the time to polish this further, it might've become his best work.

Luckily, we can listen everytime we need his voice and music. I love everything he has done. Maybe he was to good to be in This world. He deserves to be in heaven. I wish you to be the best as possible, wherever you are. I love Jeff Buckley and the light he brings to my soul and even takes me out sometimes from storm. Thanks for making up any old shit that sounds a bit like what he is actually singing but because of the indecipherable vocals we have no idea? It's not as if this person knows what Jeff is singing about 40% of the time so why thank them for spreading misinformation? Announcing "lyrics" as if they are known and correct is misleading at best, and fanciful nonsense at worst which does a disservice to such a great writer.

You said 40% of its incorrect. I think your ears are extremely bad.. The problem is you elevate Jeff too high. Which is fair because he was great.. But you don’t consider that this was an early draft… if you looked at his sketches from the book that his mother published.(His own voice) You’ll see how the lyrics from the album Grace were different from its early prototypes….

I don't even know what to say, this is just so beautiful, this version has really inspired me to create my own music, music so beautiful, words cannot describe. That's how I feel right now listening to this, and pretty all of his other music too.

Out of all his demo tracks, "Jewel Box", "Thousand Fold", "Gunshot Glitter" and most of all, _THIS_ absolute masterpiece are the tracks I'd do anything to hear completed, full-band versions of! They're already extraordinary, but they could've been even more magnificent... man, he had so much more to give. May he rest in peace for all the peace he has brought to broken souls across this lonely blue orb drifting through silent space....
Simply amazing. Thank you for sharing. I’ve gotten chills from many of Jeff’s songs but none like this. The arrangement is gorgeous and of course with Jeff’s voice... speechless 😢 can’t imagine what the album would’ve been like finished. I sure hope this version comes out one day.

@@acsone3546 'You & I' on Sketches is a different song obviously, 'You And I' here is absolutely definitely not finished, it is a home demo from 1997. The other song was produced in 1996 by Tom Verlaine, so this came after that, and is a raw demo recorded without the band, a producer, or a studio. Not sure how get "absolutely finished" out of that.

No. This was recorded in Memphis during the time of the other 4-track demos that made it onto Side 2 of Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. How this never made the album, is beyond me.
