  • In this video, I test a guitar interface for iOS based on the original iRig, and see what sort of quality recordings can be achieved with such a cheap piece of gear.
    If you have a favourite way to record guitars on your iPad or iPhone, let me know in the comments.

    Hey Pete, so here we are many years older and wiser. I watched this video because I was thinking about other alternatives to my iRig2 and this one came up in the CZcams feed.
    What is exceptionally interesting is that what prompted my interest was I was experiencing bass bleed through but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until I watched this video and you playing bass with the guitar bleed just like I am now.
    Amazing! So who knew that an ancient video of yours would solve a problem years later.
    Ps. You look so young!

    Great demo, magisterial skills as well. By far the most comprehensive demo that I’ve watched. Sorry [New at this] if the answer to my fallowing question was answered in this clip, but can this device send the signal out to my amp?
    I’m hoping that it can work like this:
    guitar out >interface input
    Interface adaptor out>iPhoneX
    Headphone jack out> Amp send (by passing the preamp)
    Would this work?

    Its convenient, but the sound input quality is very much reduced when compared to a standard class compliant audio interface connected via lightning connector. This sounds a lot more treble and thin. Also keep input volume below 70% to avoid crosstalk feedback.

      Hi there. No problems at all. Always happy to answer questions.
      This interface is only really for instruments and doesn’t have a preamp that is the best option for microphones. It would work, but he quality wouldn’t be great.
      I would suggest an interface that has both an instrument and microphone input. I go through a bunch of interface options on this video which might help you out. The Steinberg UR12 is my go-to option right now.

      @@PeteJohnsMusic I feel like this might be another basic question but doesn't the lack of a preamp mean that I'll run into problems using a guitar with passive pickups? My instrument doesn't have any dials or anything.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 5 lety

      Hey there. A good question, and the difference between instrument, mic and line level signals is a curly one. Most electric guitars, even with passive pickups, send a “hot” enough signal to not need any amplification. A passive mic level input however is much too low for use without a preamp. Hope this makes sense!

    Cool tip for playing around... you can connect an irig and download “midi guitar 2” at the appstore

    Basically you can control GarageBand with your guitar!

    Hey I just recently bought the irig 2, and I'm curious whether I'd be able to plug in a mic (with anXLR to 1/4 cable), and record directly from that mic onto my computer? I was thinking of trying to record my acoustic drums with just one mic. Do you think it's possible?
    Also I was thinking of getting a STAGG SDM70 Dynamic Microphone because I'm cheap. Have you used that before?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey there. I haven’t used that particular mic I’m afraid so can’t really comment.
      So, you can use a dynamic mic with a 1/4” instrument jack but the problem you are going to face is the gain (or volume) level of the signal. A mic interface has a preamp which amplified the signal as it goes in. A guitar input doesn’t have any amplification, so whole you could just connect a mic to a 1/4” jack, the volume you get would be quite low and you would probably get a noisy signal. You would be. Ether off investing in something like the iRig Pre or the Tascam iXZ.
      I might do a video on this soon as I get this question quite a lot.

    My iRig never does that
    I've been using my iRig for 2 yrs now & never have had this issue of it activating my app timeline 1:13

      Yes, I have a heap of different interfaces and my genuine iRig products are definitely a lot better. This one seems to have a dodgy connector.

    i'm using the irig2 and i'm hearing a lot of hissing on the clean amps.

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 3 lety

      Yup. You might need to upgrade to a digital interface like the iRig Pro or HD models. czcams.com/video/KL7dlCqYxic/video.html

      @@PeteJohnsMusic i have both and when i use irig hd2 although hissing is minor whenever i use your tip to increase the volume by doing that merge trick this hiss is loud. is there any other way to get high volume without all that hissing? what settings do you use for example when you plug your guitar in? thanks in advance

    how about the background noise?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 4 lety

      Hey there. The analog iRigs are a little on the noisy side. If you’re looking for a cleaner connection, the iRig Pro and HD range are really good. czcams.com/video/jkAGVKOtguo/video.html

    Can this be used to connect a keyboard ???

    • @SammyDumanauw
      @SammyDumanauw Před 6 lety +2

      Crison Borges yes it would work but the phone will receive it as an audio not as a midi

    • @PeteJohnsMusic

      Thanks for watching and your question and answer. Sammy is spot on - any device that can output via a standard 1/4” jack. I have a video where I do this using my other interfaces, but the concept is exactly the same.

    Does it sound good for acoustic guitars?

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 3 lety +1

      Depends on the acoustic guitar’s pickup. For bets quality I recommend a digital interface like this - czcams.com/video/jkAGVKOtguo/video.html

    This irig without audio interface work

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  Před 4 lety

      HI there. Yes, this connects directly via the 3.5mm input jack. It works, but is a little noisier, especially for distorted tones.

    What i hate about that app is the latency

      GarageBand? I haven’t had many issues with latency personally. Http://studiolivetoday.com/garageband

    It’s not working on my iPad Pro 11in. I’m using a converter to have a headphone jack on the usb c.

      Oh really? I haven’t tried my iRig in to my iPad Pro via the dongle. It creates a TRRS jack so it should technically work? 🤔

      Hey there. Email and contact details in the description. I would also suggest asking over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group as there are 3,000+ folks there who can help you out and you might get a quicker response.
