In the long term goodness will always win. I believe that. Karma has a time lag in certain cases between action and result. There is a verse in the Dhammapada that compares bad people experiencing good to milk. It takes time to sour but it eventually does if they keep on with that. Likewise the good can take time to flower but it does. So keep cultivating those positive habits.

A good metaphor for being a person who is not living a good and honest life is when somebody appears to be wealthy but they are actually just deeply in debt. Being dishonest and treating others poorly will create emotional debt that we carry around. It all comes around and catches up with you eventually.

9:38 for me I’ve noticed that the fruit of our merits mostly starts with the mind..the feelings one gets from doing good and the thought patterns that are reinforced from good things, is the start of the fruiting ,for me personally…it doesn’t have to be an outward “reward”…just having a happier, more peaceful mind can be a reward.
It has been almost a year since you first helped me! I have been going to the Pittsburgh Buddhist center for 6 months now and my life and karma is forever changed. I found my family! I always thank you for introducing me to Dhamma and Buddha ❤❤❤ which lead me to my Sangha

I saw one female classmate who I hadn't seen in thirty years. She was a very attractive young lady in highschool. While I kept my composure, inside, this was my first reaction when saw her was:😳 then😔.

People change. You are only as "good" as your last actions. The question is more "am I putting others first before taking care of myself and my own life?". There is a degree of when that has bad consequences on your wellbeing and its important to learn when its the right time to be EGOISTIC. If you want wellbeing. And egoistic is not necessarily a negative thing like its often portrayed, usually by those people who are feeding of others.

If we believe in karma, it is okay that my bad karmas ripen now so that I can accept them & let it go - knowing that in the future our good karmas would ripen for us to enjoy after we have exhausted all our bad karmas. Not sure if this is right but it is what I tell myself so that I don’t complain too much but learn to accept what life throws at me. One exception: Toxic people
If you were dealing with a narcissist or somebody with a toxic personality -
    Walk AWAY
You can't create enough good karma or love to change somebody like that.
I grew up believing that I should forgive endlessly and sacrifice myself for others and I am a recovering people-pleaser and codependent.
    Robina Courtin (Buddhist nun), said:
"Having compassion doesn't mean being foolish."
Keep being a good person but don't be afraid to walk away and take care of yourself if you are being abused in any capacity!

When will I see the fruits? Well it may happen so that one may never see certain fruits, 'cause our efforts in doing wholesome deeds are just translating into the neutralization of bad karma we may have accumulated in the past, so our wholesome deeds might serve us to avoid bad things instead of gaining good things, according to my understanding. But that is excellent, too, for if nothing else, we are equilibrating our past bad karma with wholesome deeds so that we are stopping a fruit from ripening with bitter taste. By this it is meant that good deeds may yield good results, or instead, they may also stop bad results from materializing, which is also good in the end.

Verdad. Verdadera.

In my life I know there are friends and acquaintances. True friends stand by you. Acquaintances come and go. Nick speaks so true. I am 71 and I have been living long enough to see karma happen. I have a clear and restful mind, I am in good health and I have a few GOOD friends. I am content in my life. It took some years to cultivate but it’s all so worth it. Thank you Nick.

For example if we are doing good deeds like caring for sick or elderly and we do enjoy it and it makes us feel ‘good’ inside, but to be honest if there is even a small intention there to receive good fruits???? 3/4/24 Wednesday
Wow! I have binge watch this video since morning and there are so many insights.
Sorry for being so lengthy. 😅
One - it comforted me. The lesson validate what I am mindfully doing, deeds and thoughts, is worthwhile.
Two - it clarified my doubt on whether I will be rewarded for being, hardworking at work, treating people kindly and loving myself. It is not wrong to have boundary to people and it is wise to be practise good.
Three - it open my eyes that a Sangha is also human. They have feelings and desire that will arise. Hence it is normal to have desire and feelings. The key is not to cling and as much as possible to have right view in every situation when unwholesome thoughts arise.
Four - Patience and be a trust worthy person. How many times I have for selfish means discounted people. Trusting people is hard. GOOD people is hard to find. Be GOOD Myself and good people will come. Be wise to discern who are good 👍
A lot to learn and practise 🙂‍↕️
The biggest take away from this video for me is to continue to do Good. Be a good kind person.
Kindness makes the world go round.
Transference of merit to Teacher. Teacher be strong in the path, surrounded and supported by genuine good people.
May Teacher be strong and heathy.
    Sadhu Sadhu Sadhu ❤

Such a powerful notion through its way of perception & perspective one has to go by to understand, further more to share knowledge of. Nick, blessing received & your way of compacting natural defilements of what one might become caught up with was out standing. Yet the idea that Peace of mind is Easily over looked was something I was fascinated by, because in truth, that is where growth can than boom from, growth in goodness, growth for gratitude, and seemingly growth in one’s very trust.

    Ven Nick,
I want to feel grateful that I am a human. But I worry that with reincarnation, the fact that I was made a sensitive person, with deep-processing, I find it difficult to understand what I need to learn in this lifetime since so many thoughts enter my head

While I do believe that our past lives affect the present one (usually called wyrd in my own culture but a very similar concept to karma as I understand it), our present society (especially the hyperindividualist capitalist US society) definitely rewards people for being as greedy and selfish as possible. Whether it's bosses paying workers as little as possible, landlords jacking up the rent without ever fixing anything, or just the "bootstraps" ideology, society encourages people to put greed, money, power, social status, superficial beauty, etc above all else. This is the other part of why the richest people are often immoral or dishonorable.
It is of course important to root out these social ills within our own minds and spirits, which I believe you are an expert teacher at Ven. Nick, but I think it is equally important that we collectively work to build a society that places caring for each other and the environment as its highest values.

Hi Nick, I am wondering if it would be possible for you to share some wisdom in a video about injustice. Right now I am struggling to get to grips with the humanitarian crisis and suffering within Gaza, and how the politics surrounding it (in the west) are enabling it to continue and even get worse. I find it very hard to reconcile and accept these injustices which affects my state of mind a lot. If you could share any light on this, it would be much appreciated, thank you ❤

I try seriously not to be part of warfare, violence and killing. Not directly and not indirectly. Not in thoughts, in words and deeds. I work on cultivating a peaceful mind and look for help and company.

I think karma is one of the more difficult aspects of Buddhism to understand. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding you, forgive me, but your definition seems to be the like the lay person’s idea of do good in this life and you’ll reincarnate in a better form next time. This idea always jars with me, for example when I think of babies being born with severe health problems or born into abject poverty. I can’t accept it’s because of misdeeds in their previous life. Instead I prefer to think we reincarnate all the time and our karma is like the baggage (some good, some bad) we bring to each situation.

"I'm the owner of my actions, heir to my actions, born of my actions, related through my actions, and have my actions as my arbitrator. Whatever I do, for good or for evil, to that will I fall heir"
That's why we should do the best in our practice to be free from the wheel of life and karma's chains as soon as possible, because karma is not something beautiful, it's not something that should be sugarcoat or seen as divine justice.

A good person won’t take advantage of others, but it’s important he doesn’t let others take advantage of him. He knows to stand up for himself. Like Gandhi or Mandela or MLK who fought through non violence.

I don't know much about Buddhism but it seems the Buddhist explanation is rather flawed. They're doing well because they were good in a past life ---yeah, well...hmmm...the thing is there's no one out there doling out rewards. They're doing well because they're a strong predator and we exist in a predatory system. Life feeds on life. Might makes right. Advantage doesn't care about labels of good and evil. Psychopaths, sociopaths and vicious lunatics thrive in our world. They're CEOs of the largest corporations. They lead countries. They're at the top of the food chain.
Fortunately it's more complex than that. We live in a social system too where being socially functional and compatible has its advantages as well. Once you get past the idea of somebody out there keeping score and giving rewards you can start to understand the system. The system is the only thing there is. I think though, and I could be wrong, the System is dynamic, its evolving just like we are. It's infinitely complex and growing more complex. I think in ways we're creating it, or at least growing along with it....influencing it. Machiavellianism is a reality but it isn't the whole reality. Existence is complex enough that life is a creation....its your creation.

@@susannegerber7360 As soon as you see a cult leader getting turned into a deity, that's really all ya gotta know. Any more energy put into it and the next thing you know you're selling flowers at the airport or going door to door with pamphlets. Doesn't matter what cult it is, the patterns and the story are always the same.
