- Upgrading the MacMini G4 with 1GB DDR Ram & 256GB MSATA SSD drive. This PowerPc machine is great and runs OsX Tiger as well as the Alternative Commodore Amiga like operating system MorphOS.

Fantastic and somewhat underrated machines. I got a couple Intel-based ones for all my daily tasks
Morphos is excellent.
It’s a great os and still very active
I apologize for my "stupid" question: how does it behave compared to Linux? Would you say it's just better?
Really like the look of that ssd adaptor and how it speeds up loading. Didn’t realise that existed!
Nice video Ravi, seems like that upgrade was worth it. It's great to keep these old systems alive. Thanks for using my channel when testing, haha 😂👌🏻
Any time mate
Might wanna give this a go as I really enjoy alternative operating systems like RISC OS.
Nice. I have a similar mSATA to IDE card in my A4000. The adapter mounts in a blank PCI card which works nicely in a Zorro slot.
Very nice!
Hi Ravi. I was thinking about doing this myself with my Mac Mini which has the latest MorphOS on it. I got my Mac Mini 2nd hand last year. I fired it up last night. As MorphOS boots there's a screen which has some info about the CPU and RAM at the bottom. To my surprise it said 980MB RAM. So I assume it was upgraded before I got it. I would think the RAM is going to help more than getting a mSATA SSD when it comes to speeding things up although I did do a similar upgrade on an old x86 laptop last year which did help a bit. I'll mull the Mac Mini SSD upgrade over a bit. Decisions, decisions.
I've already done this with my PowerBook g4... 256gb sk hynix msata ssd, with a lycom st173 msata to ide/pata adapter 👍
Also just bought a macmini g4@1.42ghz. can't get the lycom adapters anymore, what would you recommend???
Cheers 👍
I have a 2009 MacMini G4 which my mother brought me back. As I haven't used it in decades I forgot the admin password I had past set to it. So I can't even access El Capitan of whatever version of MacOS it was running when I left it due to relocation. I was wondering if I could totally erase its hard drive content from an external USB disk with MorphOS image/installer on it? My aim is essentially use it running Morph for the mlni CD bay and as a small files & web server and eventually as hardware firewall. If the erase/install works, would MorphOS could allow the later? I can't reach their support without being on a mailing list, which I don't want. My first contact with computers was through graphic design with an Amiga by the way, then the Mac Quadra appeared and I used both.;-)
Let me know if you can get trippe-boot up and running. OS9, OSX, MorphOS.
OSX and morphos is not a problem, but OS9 is a big problem.
You can load boot.img from an TFTP via OpenFirmware and continue booting on a usb-stick, but USB 1.1 is slow.
I have a 2006 (Intel) Mac Mini that I upgraded to a Core 2 Duo, and yeah it was super frustrating to open the case.
I can imagine it’s even tighter in the intel
Link to the mSata drive is broken. Can you please specify the exact type of drive used?
I tried upgrading my C2D mac mini drive to an SSD some time ago but it wouldn't recognise the drive, the samungs evo something or other, sent it back for a replacement, tried again with the next drive, same problem. I wonder what my issue woz...
Maybe it was like the header information on the ssd. Maybe the Mac could not read it. Ssd’s are funny things
I sliced a finger trying to open one of these things, they're an absolute nightmare. Apple must have had a special tool for opening them without damage to the machine or the operator.
Yeh it’s a nightmare, I don’t think I have seen a single one that’s been opened without some damage
You can also overclock MacMini till 1.5Ghz - to speedup Tiger and Morphos ;-)
Oh nice did not know about that
The IDE Harddisk has 0 impact on streaming. RAM might, but only if you increase its speed, capacity will only have an impact if your OS is swapping ram to a swap file. The other way you can improve the streaming speed will be using an Ethernet connection instead of WiFi, WiFi (particularly usb based adapters) needs to use much more CPU to handle the network link (Signal processing, encryption etc). If you manage to get a good WiFi adapter that actually handles all the signal and data processing without needing the CPU (not many, if any, supported on MorphOS as far as I know - am using it on a MacBook G4 actually which only recognizes the internal WiFi adapter sometimes and will crash if you actually try and use it, so am waiting for an update the fixes the WiFi support on my MacBook G4, quite a pitty and the reason I am yet to pay for the non-test version)
I was thinking the same thing but theories aside, his test showed there actually was a difference. Maybe the software is accessing the drive the whole time, even if it's a strange design choice.
If I was to install this to a mac mini, would I be able to play a500 and cd32 games on it
Yes you will, I will have a guide on how to do that coming out as next video
@@Djformula Looking forward to that!
A wide palette knife opens these without any damage
thanks for the tip :)
If you able to do 720p then your there alright. Alot less energy too.
Gotta be honest: I was interested in running MorphOS as a hobby OS on a G4 or G5 machine for quite some time. I followed the development of the OS since before it was available for Macs.
However, as an avid user of FOSS (free and open source software), I can't stand how hostile the MorphOS community is against FOSS.
Also, I just think that shelling out money for an obsolete PowerPC system and then again even more money for the operating system itself (especially that much) is just not viable. And yes, I know: "yOu CaN uSe It FoR fReE, jUsT rEbOoT eVeRy 30 MiNuTeS." - No.
I think, MorphOS should be ported to x86 or ARM. I'm a developer. I'd be interested in developing software for the OS if it was available for modern architectures and could be used as an ACTUAL daily driver. But so far, it just seems to be for people who like to dwell in the past.
