- Great to be down in Sydney. Couldn't leave with out one quick catch and cook... With a sneaky creature taking a bite of my finger when least expected it. But what was it?

Damn that Eel !!! Because of the title and thumbnail i was watching with suspense the whole video by the time you were eating the fish I had all but forgotten about the impending doom then BAM out of nowhere caught me off guard as much as it did you.

Excellent again Rod. The clip at the beginning of you on a paddle board with your som, reminded me when you first took him out fishing for flateys on a paddle board, he fell asleep and you held his life jacket to secure him from falling off. Long time ago.

Great stuff mate. I was a Sydney harbour wharf rat as a kid in the 60s early 70s . A lot of the wharf's have changed. Neilson park had a wharf and shark pen as did Manly wharf on the west side before the big storm of 74 that smashed it. Why not go for the blackfish they are good eating as well when properly cleaned.
I caught one of those morray eels while fishing from the jettys in Cadiz Spain.

Shot bro, this episode was one of my favorites because I live in Auckland (NZ) cbd and we catch good fish in the city... i recommend you try fish head soup, delicous, chur cuzzy
That bream looked friggin delicious.
I fish for groper off the Sydney rock ledges and the moray eels are one reason I don't like going after the red crabs with my hands. They live in the same crevasses and underwater beds. I'm a chicken so I use the rock-runner and scotchy crabs instead.
As a young nursing student at US PUBLIC HEALTH HOSPITAL In San Francisco ( which took care of maritime incidents) , I took care of a patient that had a huge Murray eel bite to his thigh 😮 thanks for bringing back that memory !!

Pretty cool to see your old stomping ground. I ran a safety boat for the Mirror world champs one year, did many laps between Shark Island and the heads there, shepherding a fleet of little red sailed boats into the race. I really wanted to go explore the coves around there, but between the sea planes and the ferry's and the sheer logistics of managing hundreds of boats, they were very very busy days. I would have loved to take my little rubber boat out for a day trip around the harbour, but the one day off we had in the week, I slept for about 19 hours. tough yakka. fun tho, and a really magnificent body of water.

Love a good 'trash fish' cook up Rod! Caught a bunch of trevalley the other day and made sashimi and beer battered fillets and it was bloody delicious. We are spoilt for choice here in Oz and the folklore about this fish or that fish often exceeds the reality when it's fresh and prepared well.
Hot tip re the chilli oil - have a look at Coles or order online some Umami Papi brand. It's bloody delicious and I almost find a way to include it in every meal hahaha 😂 It's in the deli section not the Asian section though!!!
You are around South Head area... Why didn't you go to Pittwater or to North Head, Old Man's Hat or Bluefish Point?. Even better if you wanted to spear fish, then East of Shelly Beach at Manly is excellent. I guess you must be staying with Malcolm Turnbull etc....LOL!....When I was a teenager in the 80's - we spent every weekend summer to winter spearfishing at Shelly Beach and Fairy Bower area, and all the way around to Bluefish Point. Fished the platform at North Head - had to climb down the 100m+ cliff on the chains/ladders and bolts etc. And we also spearfished/fished from Luna Park all the way around to the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron area - was scary and awesome at the same time.
I think it was a Moray Eel I watched a video of that took a diver's thumb clean off. It was an eel that they knew well and fed often, it just grabbed his thumb and pulled. Apparently they are very strong.

As much as i like snapper and a lot of others target them. The bream is very underrated and delicious, not hard to find either fishing land based or boat.

I really enjoyed how you recounted your dive. I would be in favour of you doing a voice over on what ur trying to do or achieve while ur spearing. How u move on from a target or places u sorta thought may produce a fish. But great video. My kids like ur fishing videos he most. Question what happened to the sailing boat?

i bet it was an eel.
i was standing in a tidepool cleaning some squid while camping in Hawaii and a little moray eel tried to bite my toe. everything else stayed away, so i would say probably an eel.
