  • What is causing this annoying noises on 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4WD?

Scotty Kilmer had some good advice for preventative maintenance. Get some AT-205 reseal put in a spray bottle and spyay on rubber boots bushings and rubber parts twice a year or at least once a year. Rejuvinates rubber. Bushings will still probably wear but should last far longer.

I have a 2003 Tacoma and have learned the hard way. I had the front struts replaced twice. The first time I went to after market which was too harsh of a ride. The second time I had OEM struts installed but then realized I should have had the whole strut and spring assembly replaced, not just the strut. One side rides a little stiffer than the other. The trucks is completely stock.

it is probably a combination of worn suspension parts, like you showed us. That squeak sounded mostly like dry ball joint, which I had on another vehicle.

When the lower ball joints get really bad on these trucks they also make a squeaking noise. And the leaf springs often do at the rear.

I went through the same thing on my 4Runner. I bought ready-made struts and thought I was good. I put less than 10K on them. Bushings were toast, alignment was off, I was in disbelief. This was not neglect, as others are commenting. Lesson learned. It's KYB or better from here on out.

Here I've a '17 model, $50k truck and I've never had creaking near this bad in any of them (3)....of course the dealership is not an option at this point, the last thing the lazy accessories mngr wants to do is call back on a squeaky vehicle....makes me wonder if they upgraded this thing to spec at the dealership, after all this is the same dealer who somehow didn't tighten the drain plug on the oil pan when last changing the oil on my wife's 4Runner! I would check the upper and lower ball joints very carefully? The upper you showed in the video is Not OEM. It has a grease zerk. The lower ball joints may have never been changed. They make that sound while sitting still and turning the wheel back and forth just a little. They fail not long after you start hearing squeeks! I have a 98 Tacoma TRD 4wd 270k miles and the original Bilstein struts never had that bushing fail? I just replaced with Bilstein 5100's. OEM only Ball joints on all Toyota Trucks! Moog is what you make repairs with right before you sell the truck.

@Sam S for Toyotas though, you're better off sticking with KYB if you don't plan on buying them directly through Toyota as KYB generally makes most, if not all of Toyotas suspension parts

I try not to buy Chinese anything, simply because I've had it with contributing to communist China's economy. Sometimes there is no alternative. Years ago I needed a water pump for a '96 Accord. I could not find one that wasn't made in China. Even the ones from the Honda dealer were made in China. It shows you how dependent we've become on China. Not smart in my opinion.

DYI $350 for all 4 shocks including the tool to compress the springs. This is what I paid to replace all the shocks on my 02 Tacoma.
