The one he stops on is the one he drinks while holding the bullets in his mouth, after he drinks the shot he grabs a revolver and pulls the bullets out of his mouth one at a time and loads them in the gun. Finally he plays Russian roulette and obviously he survives. The TLDR version is... He does this in the scene presented because he doesn't care if he lives or does, he's seen the worst that people/the world have to offer and knows he could win in any situation.
