Hydra, like Santorini, is one of those islands of Greece that were built on the backs of donkeys, mules and horses. No cars have access to the island, and the equines have always been used as a means of transportation for everything (building material, furniture, white goods, groceries, water and people). Today they also work in turism, and with Hydra being a very turistic destination, the summers for the overworked animals are painfully long. This video is dedicated to them.

I hate people that are not able to respect animals. I have been to a couple of greek islands. My husband had to hold be back because I was so so angry in a lot of cases. Most of the people in Greece, Turkey, any eastern country lived this way probably all their life and do not know better. This is very sad and everbody who is missing a dog of cat companion I feel so sorry for.

During my visit to Hydra years ago, I had no desire to ride a mule up stone stairways or harm the cats that I saw locals kicking away from their tables at the tavernas. 😢
Shameful tourists. That will be cool only evening time and if the horses has water and dont take luggage or fat people. Here in Bulgaria has no horses but caretas. Same story-no water and horses look skinny

OK. I've watched this twice and I don't see any problem. They are well cared for, no sign of abuse, look well fed, and are not asked to carry heavy loads or move at a dangerous pace. They are doing what mules were bred to do. Looks like a nice place to visit and the mules enhance that.
The only clue is in the video description which describes them as "overworked." But this type of channel tends to attract people who would view any kind of animal ownership as abuse.
If you don’t see any problem you are part of the problem
I was there, took photos of the wounded and abused mules. Sent the photos to PETA, they said that I was not the only one to report this cruelty.
Sent two letters, the the mayor of Santorini, and to the minister of tourism of Greece.
I don’t know what else do, these animals are voiceless😢

That's so sad! I'm giving up everything to go to Greece and volunteer at a dog/cat rescue...maybe I should help recuing donkeys instead!

Poor animals! People should think about how would they feel if they were animals. This is so sad.
Unfortunately there always gonna be working animals but government should apply some rules and regulations.Animals being checked out and if injured can not work also working hours also any harm to animals owner will pay fees….maybe animals activists can do that by sighing petition

Shame on Hydra Greece. We will never be a sane society until all the animals are treated with compassion and respect. Animals should be allowed to have International Lawers!
Is it possible to shake up the government to do something about it or they just don’t care? Although a video can show what’s going on but it will not change the situation. It needs a revolution.

Μη δραματοποιείτε την κατάσταση … τα ζώα μπορούν να σηκώσουν έως και συγκεκριμένο φορτίο - βάρος … απλά πρέπει να διασφαλίζονται οι σωστές συνθήκες (θερμοκρασίας μεγέθους φορτίου) ώστε να μην υποφέρουν… επίσης δεν είναι οι μόνοι ή οι πρώτοι άνθρωποι που βγάζουν το μεροκάματο τους απο τα ζώα τους
Δεν είναι δραματοποιηση. Είναι η καθημερινότητα. Αν φάνηκε δραματικό τότε η καθημερινότητά είναι δραματική
Considering how poor Greece is, I suggest all these stray animals be put down. Better for them and better for you. This self-righteous "rescuing" is just prolonging the inevitable and creating a mess for everyone.
