- Today is my last video in York and I've decided to visit Forest! Now, this was pot luck as I was on my travels walking through the heart of York and happened to stumble across it whilst visiting. The decor is excellent, the service was brilliant but the food... wow.

Well a great review as always . I'm catching up as I'm a newcomer . That is not what I would call a glass of wine !! I love a bit of the green stuff , makes me feel " healthy " . Personally I prefer rump , for the flavour . As always , a balanced review 😊.

First look at the meal,just amazing
I think we need to really look at portion size as that is easily enough to fill any person, and fill them well. If you're not working on a field or a out doors doing something very exerting, you don't need 1800cal meals.

I'm here enjoying Mr Gary's videos, while he's still climbing up the ladder of fame! Once he gets popular and recognition for who he is, people will start interrupting the reviews! However, I do believe it won't be as bad as Rate My Takeaway because Danny is out on the street and Gary is nicely tucked away inside the restaurants! The restaurant looks just like my father's hunting lodge. He used to be an avid hunter. The restaurant's food is excellent, as my father occasionally goes there on his cook's days off. I agree the service and meal are both 10/10. I'm glad you are enjoying yourself in York and also, congratulations on reaching 5000.

Having just watched your review of the York Roastery, the food at Forest was how it should be done. The steak was cooked to perfection, always telling if a chef can cook beef/steak to a medium rare or rare. The chips were great, although I winced that the steak was placed on on top of some of them so those were soggy. However, the chips that remained were cooked well-crunchy outside and soft inside. The crunch on the onion rings was outstanding. The vine grown tomatoes were a nice touch. I would gladly pay extra for the peppercorn gravy. Everything looked homemade, and cooked by a good chef and lime staff who know how to cook.Well deserving of the perfect score.

Gary as an ex chef my favourite cut is Ribeye cooked medium rare with either peppercorn sauce or bernaise sauce.
Lovely stuff Palace. Would be my go-to as well. Maybe with beef dripping gravy or peppercorn!

That looked like a really nice meal, Gary. A really rumpsteak can be difficult to get right, but they got it spot on. The chips looked perfect and the same goes for the rest of the plate. Made me hungry, mate! I prefer a filet steak or a sirloin steak, cooked rare. Another fantastic review, mate! Have a wonderful rest of your stay in Yorkshire. Completely agree with you. I'm always a bit apprehensive about getting a rump steak as it can be particularly tough but it was excellent. Glad you liked the look of it. I do love a filet and sirloin too and completely agree with the way you have it cooked. Please give it a try, you will not regret it. See you on Wednesday! Thank you as always.

That looks like an excellent plate of food, not too bad a price. I love steak and am more or less happy with any cut, as long as it’s cooked well. I have steak either medium rare or medium. I used to have it well done, but it lacked flavour. Fabulous video Gary

My favourite meal is steak au poivre with the steak cooked rare. I live in a bilingual area thus the half English, half French we use. That was a beautiful plate of food and deserved your rating. Thanks for sharing, Gary.

Not too keen on the decor in the Forest but the steak dinner looks lovely. Do you remember the name of the Australian Shiraz? I would pay that but I would have the mushroom. I like sirloin steak medium.
As a vegetarian, I'd get rid of the steak and ask for extra mushrooms.

One of the best things in a person’s life is eating a lovely meal with a good glass of wine in fine surroundings and not having to pay an awful lot of money for the privilege. And, judging by your experience in the Forest restaurant in York that place seems to have it all and rightly deserves a 10 score. Now it will have to go on my list of restaurants/pubs to visit in York, thanks to you. Loving the channel. Can’t wait to see where you decide to dine out in Newcastle.

Another wonderful review Gary. It looked more like a mansion rather than a pub and I could see all the flavour from the amazing camerawork. Wow Gary you found an absolute Jem here you really did, i had to reply the clip when you cut into the Rump as i could not believe it was Rump !! a very good cut and supplier.
You asked what cuts we like and i must admit im a fillet man, yes i know Rib Eye etc has better flavour, but at 57 the more tender the meat the better for me, also these great sources like this one you had with brandy, really add to the dish.

I made my own after finding a recipe off the web, but i noticed Tesco have it for sale now.
INGREDIENTS
50 g beef dripping
2 shallots
3 garlic cloves
½ star anise
100 g fatty stewing steak like skirt, flank, chuck etc
80 g red wine
20 g port
500 g beef stock
½ teaspoon sugar
red wine vinegar
¼ teaspoon xanthan gum see notes
INSTRUCTIONS
Get a wide sauce pan over a medium heat.
Peel and finely dice the shallots. Peel and mince the garlic. Slice the beef into thin slices. Add about a third of the beef dripping to the pan and once melted, add the shallots, garlic, star anise and beef and stir fry for 4 - 6 minutes. Cook until the beef has started to brown and everything smells great.
Turn the heat up. Discard the star anise. Add the red wine and port and move everything around to get the great crusty bits off the bottom of the pan. Once the wine has bubbled away to about a third of it's volume, add in the beef stock and remaining beef dripping. Bring to a furious boil.
Let this all simmer away until it's about half of what you started with. This will take 20 - 30 minutes. Strain off all the solids (see note) and return the sauce to the pan. Turn the heat down low and adjust seasoning: it might need salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar, and add a couple of drops (I do mean a couple of drops) of red wine vinegar to taste to help balance the richness.
Once the flavour is right, whisk in the xanthan gum. You can serve immediately, or it refrigerates or freezes well.

Fabulous looking restaurant. Fabulous looking plate of food. Fabulous vlog. Rump steak can be tough as old boots but that looked great. Lovely crisp chips and onion rings and a lovely looking sauce. Reasonably priced as well. I agree it looked a perfect 10.

Great review, Gary. Love your channel. We called into Forest on spec last year. Despite being busy, they found us a lovely table and the service and food was first class and exceptional value for money. Would highly recommend Forest for anyone visiting York.

Oh my goodness Gary that meal looked absolutely fabulous !! I prefer my steak well done or medium-well at a pinch and I'm sure they would do that justice too. Home made chips and a lovely peppercorn sauce really added to the meal as did the vine tomatoes. I only wish we had discovered this restaurant when we were in York a couple of months ago. You certainly did save the best 'til last !

I stayed at Galtres Lodge last year and dined at the on-prem restaurant, Forest, a couple of times. It was absolutely divine! I share your enthusiasm. Tip for next time; you simply must try the sticky toffee pudding! It is out of this world; hands down the best I've ever had. Really enjoyed this video; thanks for posting and taking me back to a happy time.

If I was to criticise anything I would say the steak could have done with another few minutes rest before service, but it was cooked beautifully.
Forest is a lovely literally restaurant and a credit to York. Can't wait to come back and try some more restaurants!

That was really good value for your buck, I normally have sirloin cooked on my iron skillet with butter, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper and a smidge of garlic. I prefer a good marbling of fat and cooked medium rare to rare, if I’m ever in York I will definitely look up Forest as your rump steak look divine and so juicy. So glad you got to eat a great meal on your last day and thanks for a great video 😊

Well deserved 10, can't recommend that place enough. For me ribeye or sirloin steak medium rare. Homemade chips are an absolute treat and just the meal stand out from the rest. Yorkshire hospitality is the best hands down. 🤜🤛

Looked v nice indeed. I like the look of the menu. It is good to see them being brave enough to only offer one steak option and that being a rump - they are clearly very confident with that choice and it looks like they are right to be! I would always go for the Ribeye (Medium Rare) if it was on the menu and would usually avoid rump because, as you say, can be tough - but that looked spot on. Thanks Gary - great review!

Gosh that looked absolutely delicious ! Steak perfectly cooked, which doesn’t happen often. I must admit to liking a bit of fat on the edge of the steak but not everybody’s cup of tea. I like mushrooms but not a fan of onion rings, so I’d ditch them and and I’d be cheeky and ask if there was any chance of a fried egg, as a steak and egg combo is delicious. I agree with you about supporting local businesses, particularly in these difficult times when so many businesses are struggling. Another great review, I look forward to the next one

Another great review. Never had a rump streak, going to purchase a small rump roast and prepare as a steak. Most deserving of a perfect 10 rating. Blessings from Texas,USA. Oh, medium rare is the only way a streak should be prepared in my opinion. Out here a porterhouse is quite popular. 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I like my steak rare to medium rare and that looked perfect. The whole dish looked perfect and what a treat and lovely touch to put vine tomatoes on the plate. Those onion rings looked deliciously crispy too. Not a cheap meal but I would pay it for that. You could see the care and pride they take on the plate!

This place looks really good! Food definitely a 10/10, the price i thought a tad over tbh, & i also thought paying £22 for steak,the peppercorn sauce should be free...so for value I'd knock 2 points off 😂.but all in all it did look quality, & a very nice dining experience!

Hi. Been in Forest for tea tonight. What a place the food is cracking. There was another couple eating who had seen the Vlog. Happy days. If you ever get around our way Tavola is amazing food along with the Packhorse at Hayfield and the Lamb not far away.
