- Today, I'm in Wapping to visit one of London's oldest pubs and I have to say, it's truly one of a kind. Hope you like the video!
Please don't forget to like the video and subscribe to the channel.
Have you been to the Prospect of Whitby?
I must admit, we are lucky with these type of pubs. We have in London so much variety all steeped in history including great grub. Another great review Gary
Couldn't agree more!
I went to this pub last year, and it instantly became my favourite. The atmosphere and feel of the place is amazing. Beautiful pub.
I’m with you Chris a great Pub 👍
Hint Gary: Always order your beef once step rarer than what you want, as practically all pubs will slightly overcook it.
No problem, will try and do that in future! Good observation though.
Unless your in france, there its always one rarer than you ask
I order medium rare. I’m happy with that or medium.
The Prospect of Whitby was one of my bucket list London pubs, which i finally managed to visit last summer. Lovely appearance/decor, great staff, the beer was very well kept & served and the food (fish & chips) was excellent. A fabulous place!
It's a lovely place.
Hi Gary just came across your vlog of the prospect of Whitby, myself and my family go there for a lunch once a year, to remember my mother
She worked in the pud 1946 behind the bar, one night a robber came in pointed a shotgun at the ceiling and blew a hole in it, my mum gave him the money from the till, he escaped down pelican stairs into a waiting boat,
Wow Tony that’s an amazing but shocking story, it’s a wonderful pub as well 👌
Gary, Next time you're in Wapping, try the Il Bordello Italian Restaurant which is just a few doors along from The Prospect of Whitby. Wonderful selection of dishes, big portions, very reasonably priced and always busy of an evening with a wonderful ambience. I've been using the restaurant for many years, even at its' previous location of opposite the Metropolitan Police River Division's engineering building in Wapping.
Thanks for the recommendation mate!
The Prospect of Whitby, my favourite London Pub 🙂
Great pub 👍🏼
I love Britain and it’s glorious history, thanks to you guys we have a country. Keep England British 🇮🇱🇬🇧
where you from mate? which country did we make - USA? C-A-NZ?
Great to see the Israeli flag alongside the Union flag.. 🇬🇧🇮🇱
Except all countries including England are multi-cultural so keeping it British is a bit of a sheltered comment. I do agree with your comment about Britain's history however.
Sounds and looked fantastic, good value in a superb pub Gary!
Thank you mate!
Lovely atmosphere and history. The chips look nice. Even if I couldn't find food I could eat, I would absolutely go for the other reasons and have a drink!
It’s a fabulous pub to visit Siobhan
The food looks amazing and the scenery so beautiful 😊
It really is! Lovely pub :)
Looks like an amazing pub, if I'm ever near Wapping I'll give it a visit!!!!
Lovely place
that looked pukker love these old places like going back in time so much character and history another very enjoyabe blog thank you again steve
Hi Steve. Beautiful pub, the food was good but it was all about the pub. Thanks for watching!
This is one of your best filmed videos! Lots of additional info and history. Also the cutaways (finger snap) is a nice touch. Love your channel Gary!
Thank you Tony. That's very kind to hear and I'm glad you liked the older videos!
The new videos are just as good too! @@GaryEats
Fabulous review had no idea this place existed, part of our history, food prices very reasonable given location, and it looked so good for the price given the ambience of the surroundings and lovely views outside, one for me and the family to visit Gary, thank you!!!
Glad you liked it!
Hi Gary i have just discovered your channel a few days ago. And i really love it you do really great reviews. I can't stop watching you!

Any time!

Thank you Wlliam, glad you enjoyed the video and hope you subscribed!

Will be visiting this place when next in London. The place is dripping with history, great review especially the piece to camera on the Thames! Would never have guessed.
Have fun! Lovely pub and decent food. Thanks for watching!
Love the history! Appropriate reference to the Tardis😉
Thank you
Looks fantastic ❤
It was fantastic!
Just discovered your channel m8 and this is absolutely lovely content!! Keep it up m8!!!
Thank you so much! Really appreciated.
- Gary
Just found this video. Having gone down the Smoke yesterday on your recommendations (Indian Room, Balham), looks like we'll be back again early New Year to this gem. I love pubs like this, and if they do great food, all the better!
Hope you enjoy it! It's better for it's history than it's food but it's decent.
Just stumbled across your channel a couple of days ago Gary and have since watched all your reviews so far. Got to say for a new channel you are doing an amazing job so far and I'm really enjoying your assessment of each meal, the videography and your delivery! Really hope the channel grows and keep up the good work, PS - I love beef dripping gravy too!! Subscribed
Joe, that's incredibly kind of you to say and I'm happy that you enjoy the videos. Beef dripping gravy is amazing, I'm on the hunt for it now whenever we go to new places! Thank you.
- Gary
I’ll second that, just found your channel and I found myself finding the video very well made and presented well too, good luck for the future, I’m subscribed too now
Very kind of you,@@chrislazarou7491.
Thank you!
Thank you, that's lovely, I love your videos, brilliant 😊x
What a fantastic pub! Never mind the food, I could spend all day just reading the history of the place and looking round.
And the food really looked top notch too! True, London always seems bit stingy with their chips, but I still think you got a real good deal this time.
Great video mate, really enjoyed this one (especially because of where you where).
Glad you enjoyed it!
Seen this pub loads times travelling up and down the Thames. Great choice Gary
Thanks mate! A lovely pub
Hi Gary, thanks so much I'm going to try this pub on my birthday on the Thames, it looks brilliant! x🤩
Have a great time for your birthday!
Another top review thanks Gary
Thanks Jason!! 👍
wow! that mixed grill was absolutely amazing Gary. the king prawns were massive i’d love to try that. 👍
King prawns ????? Must have missed them !
Great stuff Mark 👍🏼
Glad you took my advice Gary........leave the hot stuff till last!!
😄
Hello Gary, would also recommend The Mayflower pub in Rotherhithe. Great interior and excellent food.
Hi Paul. You'll be delighted to know, I've already reviewed it. Check out fish and chips at one of London's oldest pubs!
To drink in the history of this place would really get my goosebumps tingling - would just love to be there.
The meal itself ??? ..... It looked ok, a fair score I reckon ..... but it was nothing more than a snack whichever way you look at it.
Just subscribed to your channel,I like your persona,on how you review a place, great job keep it real sir...
Thank you so much Nathan. I will keep bringing you videos, have a good weekend!
Been in there many times but never eaten ....this has made me want to rectify that...looks great.
Excellent pub, good food. Perfect combo. Thanks for watching!
Prob my fav meal Gary ,looked lovely when in London will try check it out
Great stuff Kevin.
My old man used to drink in that pub in the 60s.
It’s a lovely pub. One of London’s best for sure.
I have eaten at this place myself, I had fish and chips which I can recommend. There is a vast history to this pub, particularly regarding Judge Jeffreys, who used to lodge here when he was at the London assizes. He allegedly sentenced over 400 people to death from this area, he was later captured in the alleyway by The Town Of Ramsgate pub which is just down the road from this pub, he was dressed as a woman to try and escape capture. The Collier The Prospect Of Whitby docked here regularly to avoid paying extra charges for using the river closer to London.
Again this was an excellent and honest review and in this area The Prospect of Whitby does define gastropub food very well with a solid menu and a very decent price considering where it is placed in London.
Gary could we see some reviews of pubs across the water from here like The Mayflower, this pub stands on the site where The Mayflower actually sailed to The New World with The Pilgrim Fathers. It's definitely got a diverse menu coupled with some great history and I think subscribers to your channel would enjoy a review of the food in particular and its position in the history of the area.
You found it. Yes, loved the history behind the pub.
I really like the Prospect of Whitby pub and it's pirate of caribbean history. The perfect pub for a history buff like myself.
Completely agree.
Great value 👌
Agreed!
We had lunch in the Prospect today. Lovely place, my GF liked the fish and chips and I enjoyed the steak and ale pie 😊
Sounds great! Glad you enjoyed it. The pub is steeped in history.
My Dad's favourite place for lunch when he was working down that way. Looks a lovely pub and I would have called that steak medium rare but that's up to individual taste. I actually quite liked the uncooked tomaies, they giveca nice freshness to what could be a heavy meal.
Great price too for London.
Superb pub.
Wow, great review Gary, thank you. I love Mexican food but sadly we don’t have any Mexican restaurants near us. You really are lucky to have such diversity when eating in London. I was quite surprised that there was no chilli con carne or fajitas on the menu but I suppose that is the attraction of the place - something different ! All the dishes looked delicious 👍
You're more than welcome!
Absolutely love the novel idea of adding an item to the menu to raise money for charity. I would order the Invisible mac and cheese any day. Mouth is watering again.
Thanks for watching. Great pub and highly recommend even if it's just for a drink.
Good review, the cheaper one is what I would go for.
Thanks Ron!
Evening Gary looks like a lovely old pub. Although the steak looks good it does look like its been thrown on the plate! Fancy the tomatoes not being cooked! should be charred if nothing else. Wondered if the meal was actually hot? I have friends who live in Wapping so must give the pub a go. Thank you for that Gary
Thanks Susan. A pub with lots of history!
That looked fabulous!! By the way, my wife fancies you....
Glad you liked the video Richard. And... well thank you!
Looked very good.
Thank you 😋
Lovely pub. Nice plate of food. We would call the steak a medium in Texas. But I would not return it for the flavor. Rating = 8.5 Blessings 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you Brian 😊
I ate here a number of times in the 70s, 80's and 90's (before it was part of a pubco I think) was expensive (company expense account, although the customer had to be spending over £100,000) but the food was always superb.
The pub is the star ⭐️ without a doubt, being part of a pubco takes a small bit away but as you know the pub well the ambiance is excellent, I’ve just replied to you on another video so thank you again 😊
Great review Gary.. I've spent many a good night in the prospect..have they still got the pewter bar in there.. cheers mate..keep up the brilliant reviews .kind regards Dave 😁👍👍👍
Glad you enjoy it there Dave. Thanks for watching!
Food looked good. Would have liked to have seen a lot more of the inside of the pub though.
Apologies. Did try to show as much as possible!
Gary.. smiths fiish restaurant is around there somewhere, and also in ongar Essex, might be worth a visit 👍
Will take a look Alex.
Gary have you been to Whitby, many good fish and chips places and as for a great cup of tea there’s a trailer on Pier Road just before the bridge omg the tea is the best 👍
Planning to go in a few months. Looking forward to it, will be comparing!
The fresh scampi on the quayside.. 😋 delicious
Brilliant price for once again, being ‘on the river’. Hubby Joe would love the beef dripping sauce. Shame that the tomatoes weren’t cooked though!
Beef dripping is great. Joe has excellent taste. Thanks for watching!
Try Smiths down the road - incredible fish restaurant.
Thank you!
What's not to like, steak, chips and a nice drop of beer, at a fair price, thanks Gary.
No problem Colin.
Went in there last year on trip to London Gary lad, really superb food and a number of other decent pubs along the road to visit. Bet it gets rammed in the Summer.
Lovely pub. Going to the Mayflower on Wednesday. Hopefully you stay tuned for that! Thanks for watching :)
Good video mate try east end pie and mash
Will do soon! Need to do another Pie and Mash video. Thanks for watching!
Very very Yum...Roast Parsnips instead of Toms., Perfect.
Lovely!
I like this guy, I'm subscribed.
I'm sorry for not replying. Thank you!
Hi Gary I’m another new year to your reviews . You gave us Wetherspoons how about Wagamama there’s a newish one near me Rob .
I will try Rob. Thanks mate and glad you’re liking them 😊
You should have visited it in the 1960's, then it had more character especially on a Saturday night. No food back then, just good beer, packet of crisps and a squeeze to get to the bar. Outside 2/6 to keep an eye on your car mister! On the terrace the real smell of the river with lots of barges and traffic. Its a bit like anywhere else now, just aimed at tourists.
Would have loved to.
Upstairs eating was there then.
great pub - love the bar top in there - weird to have uncooked vine toms on a steak though
A lovely historical pub.
Good review Gary.. would love to see more Indian, kebabs and international cuisine..
I can do that for you Dan. Just have to think of the time to do so!
Another enjoyable review which highlights the interesting aspects of an historic public house. You should be working for our tourist industry. A nice meal washed down with good beer, eh Gary! If those tomatoes came from East Yorks I would give them a 10 score. Did you find the name of the flugelhorn player? Keep up your good work, Philip.
Wow, thank you! Haha, I've had a few comments saying that. Try Swoozy Swizz Guustavv. Thanks Philip.
Thanks Gary! I am a big fan of the explorer Captain James Cook - did he have anything to do with the Prospect of Whitby, bearing in mind his connection with the town and its rugged ships. All the best Philip.@@GaryEats
Wow Gary Whopping is on my list now
You make me laugh out loud love my steak rare👩🍳
Hhaha. Thanks! I do like it rare!
It's a pub me n my mate end up in when we a half marathon in spring every year. Last time I went in I had Fish n Chips and for best part of £20 I expected better. A small handful of chips just doesn't cut it, not much better than wetherspoons.
Seven Stars, behind the Royal Courts of Justice, was built in 1602. This makes it the oldest pub in London
Interesting. Thank you for watching.
- Gary
The title says 'one of the oldest'!
Ah, this used to be my local, i lived right next to it. I miss it. Quality pub. May i also recommend the mayflower just on the otherside of the river in Rotherhithe? Cheers, enjoy your reviews they are nice and chill
Thanks for sharing! I've already reviewed the Mayflower - check out my fish and chips review there!
@@GaryEats oh haha, I'll find it! Sorry newbie to the channel
Not a problem :) enjoy!
Hi gary, not very impressed with the food here, the Greek salad and pudding would be my choice, very disappointed.
Come on mr cameraman so excited to meet you and get to know you, we don't bite honestly !! 😂😂
Take care both xx
Thank you Lucy he will say hello one day xx
@@GaryEats I know I'm just pulling his leg 😂😂 xx
Thanks!
That’s really kind and appreciated thank you 🙏
Chips looked great 😋😋
It was a good meal. The pub was fantastic.
If those wooden panels could talk about the conversations they've heard and the things they've seen🤔
Amazing!
I never have beef or steak in anything other than s steakhouse - for some reason very few places can cook it properly. Normally the quality is mediocre which means they ar doomed from the start. Good to see (almost) an exception to this cynical view! Great review.
I don't disagree with you Rob. Thanks for watching!
Poor Gary , Didn't expect his popularity and now we are furious if we don't get a daily upload. .. .. Just kidding mate , enjoy your food
Hahah Mike. I'll be doing my best in the future to bring you more regular uploads. Thank you very much!
Not a bad looking meal but those chips are straight out of a freezer
The food was good but the pub was the star of the show!
Blacklock seems to be up your street and I have heard VERY good things but never been. A review of that would be great if you’re looking for suggestions
I cannot wait to go Blacklock. I'm delighted to say that I should be going next week!
I would rather the tomatoes uncooked myself. A nice fresh tomato is a great garnish for a steak.
That's fair enough my friend. Thanks for watching!
Lived in ware Hertfordshire for 14 y but from the north. Now live in Cincinnati Ohio. 1grate revive . Whish I had been to that place. Now the server in the us would. never make the mestake of putting the protine at 12 o'clock always 6.
Not the worst steak you've had. It was definitely medium, which I always ask for.
Yes
Be good gary😊
Thanks Melvyn. Hope you're well.
What a fantastic place and that really is a plate of food that I would enjoy. I'm surprised you didn't give it 10. Was that because of the beef being a bit overdone?
A little. It wasn't the best steak I've ever had either. Thanks for watching!
Looks a nice steak 🥩 that one! 👌
Glad you liked it Mark :)
Please do on on Ye Olde Cheshire Cheeze..I ate there once.
Can do that. Pricy but on the list!
Next time you have a steak or a short rib, be a bit more adventurous, try soy sauce & wasabi, it’s a fabulous combination!
I will do that David.
Very small portion of chips. I've noticed this in a lot of places. You had about 7 or 8 thick chips. I'd much prefer skinny chips myself but that portion was ridiculous.
Yes, I think that's the case with most pub food. Thanks for watching!
Great pub and great location. Pity its a Greene King pub as there beer's are average at best. As you say steak was overcooked and more medium well, pity tomatoes we raw. 8/10 from me.
Yes. I will do more independent family run pubs in the future. Thanks for watching!
I wouldn't enter a Green king pub due to their links to slavery even if it's true they have payed reparations, even if the were servin fillet steak for a £1, just my view but each have our opinions,.
I wouldn’t enter a G K pub due to their links to rubbish beer.
@johnwikes Have no idea whether they have rubbish beer or not but comment just made me chuckle.
That's way past medium, looks fine for price point though
Fair comment.
Have been watching your reviews for a few days now. Have noticed you have a big smile on your face when in Old Pubs with historic atmosphere, which I feel is nudging up the points for the food. Steak looked beyond Medium and you seemed to struggle cutting it. Uncooked Toms is not right with this type of meal, they normally go on the griddle to get some charring which was not done. For a London Pub though good value and decent sized meal.
I love historical pubs as I used to be in the trade. Thanks for watching Gary.
Liked the chips and onion rings, definately not frozen but would question portion size. The plate looked to be on the small size. The steak was medium at best. Why do chefs seem incapable of cooking a steak to order. The price seemed to be bob on to me and love beef dripping gravy. Not fussed about peppercorn sauce. Where the chips cooked in beef dripping. An aroma that takes you you to the seaside. All in all quality fayre at a reasonable price. Score 8.75/10.
They struggle to cook the thinner steaks to order, it's become a re-occurring pattern in a lot of steakhouses that I go to! I'm obsessed with beef dripping gravy, it's incredible. Thanks for watching all of my previous videos John :)
The pub may be but the food 7 out of 10 for me
Fair comment.
The Grapes in london 😂is same sort of pub its right on the river
I know it well
It’s a lovely pub but is that a snack size portion?
I will admit that the main aspect of the place is the pub itself. The food was decent.
I think that the chef should have taken the ‘blackstrap’ off that steak, every bit of it was left on, sinew is really nice if it is cooked long and slow, but on a steak……. No.
It did look lovely, but it's annoying how often places overcook the steak. Even slightly, it can mar the meal. And as a few others have said, also the reason i'll seldom order steak. And not to contradict robcoles but i've even had it happen in specialist steak places like a Hawksmoor... The raw tomatoes seemed weird though. I expect them baked or charred on the grill at least. Does look a fantastic place though, i'll add it to my list to try.
Agreed. To me, I find most places struggle to cook it spot on. I can't wait to go to Hawksmoor though - I've heard excellet things!
@@GaryEatsI'll look forward to your Hawksmoor review. Be interesting to see your take on the food, and particularly their prices. Depending on the steak you go with, its weight, they can get pretty pricey. I had a good size T-bone when i went, and my steak alone cost me £82! My steak accounted for just under a third of the bill for the total meal, with drinks... Still, it's only money eh 🙂
Prefer peas and some fried onions and a slice of a large tomato
9/10 seems accurate considering the steak was medium and not medium rare. If they got the steak right, I think it would be 10/10.
Spot on Gary.
Steak looks like it’s missing the top and bottom of it almost like it’s been cut off
Lol
Why don’t you order salad? Robyn Australia. Chips are really ordinary with food!
I do in other videos.
