The UK's BEST STEAK! Is Hawksmoor NYC's Best Steak?

- Out of all the best steakhouses in NYC: Gallaghers, Keens, Spark's, Peter Luger, Wolfgang's, etc, one of the most interesting steakhouses mentioned is Hawksmoor. Hawksmoor, originally from London, now has more than just the original Hawksmoor London location. It has locations all over London and all over the UK. It regularly tops lists of the best steak in London, the best steak in England, and even the best steak in the UK. But while Hawksmoor may be regarded as great in jolly ol' England, how does it compare to the legendary steakhouses of New York City?
In this episode of UA Eats, we embark on a journey to find out if Hawkmsoor really is all it's cracked up to be. Is Hawksmoor really legit and one of the best steaks in New York City? Or is Hawsmoor overrated? We order their famous Hawksmoor rump steak, and if it is good we may return for the Hawksmoor ribeye steak or the Hawksmoor porterhouse steak. We also give the Hawksmoor sticky toffee pudding a try, which we hear is a must try. Good may be subjective, as British steak may be different than American style steak, but we will give it our honest opinion nonetheless!

Hawksmoor NYC

The menu said it was only 12oz! What did you think its size would be?
This was a fantastic review video. Great job. Could you do the Sunday Roast video? I heard that Hawksmoor have the best Sunday Roast in New York City. It also got good reviews on it too.
Thanks for that very honest review. You've saved me some time and money. 👍
You're welcome!
Hi UA thanks for the videos. Did you enjoy that steak? Some of the best steaks I've had have been cooked at home
Its crazy how much cheaper this place is than the vast majority of steakhouses in Las Vegas.
I know right Vegas is gouge City for a good Steakhouse and whatnot however there is a Hidden Gem in Vegas The Orleans next time you're there a checkout Alder & Birch been going there for quite a few years now while on summer vacation they're filet mignon and lobster tail surf and turf with really good sides are fantastic the seafood bisque and onion soup never disappoint Great Value as well nice quaint atmosphere it's inside the casino but once you're in there it's really nice check it out
Vegas has gotten super expensive. I think they can get away with it since it’s all tourism
I think the non-rump steak options are prob about the same as Vegas
how is it crazy, vegas is not the place to go for poor people
Ok, so I have not ever heard of this. Quick background, I lived in England for a time. I was in Leicester (about 2.5 hours north of London) and our local joint was Miller & Carter. A chain, like this. It was pretty much how you described this. I never had food that blew my mind while living there, under seasoned, but I'll give it to them for the quality of products. I'd definitely pop in here because of my connection with England, and, well... I love steak 😂 Thank you for another great review sir!!
Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully it was I just ordered the wrong thing. If you try it let me know if you have a better experience.
Oh you poor American soul. Miller & Carter is basically the Cheesecake factory.
@@benjaminyip9112 apparently you didn't read my whole comment. And, Cheesecake Factory is better. I consider both fast food chains.
In my experience, judging a restaurant during it's off-hours isn't always the fairest to them. They're set up to produce volumes of food with an established process that works best when they're busy. I know this doesn't sound logical, and that you should get more attention to your meal when they are slower. But in practice, I don't find this to be the case. My guess is that during down hours, you don't always ge their best people manning all the critical stations and putting out their best. So I'd take this review with a bit of skepticism.
Good honest review.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I don’t usually go out to steak houses. Still I was taken aback that the presentation was lacking, absolutely bare! No juice or pan drippings, pat of seasoned butter, not even a spring of parsley. And as you commented, the piece was on the smaller side. Granted higher end restaurants are ala carte but this was so visually unappealing. And under-seared & under-seasoned didn’t help.
Perhaps there wasn't much they could have done with it, considering the small portion size
Eater feature made this place look amazing, thanks UA for saving us $!
You're welcome!
Another great video
Thanks!
You don't go to the Hawskmoor to buy a small piece of rump. You gotta either go all out on a $150+ cut or go on a Sundays for a roast.
In this economy ...yeah dude...sure
I've been to Hawksmoor in London and Manchester. Very good restaurant. Had the bone marrow starter, and the Rib-eye, which were excellent. An expensive place though, so probably not high on the value aspect. For a business or date lunch/dinner, it is a good place to go, if budgets are forgiving. 😀
Hawksmoor is one of my favorite restaurants. Sunday roast dinners.
Good review. I was intrigued by this place but sounds like there are many better places to check out.
UA this was a fantastic review! Love that you are critical and not too laudatory! Makes for really interesting reviews.
Thanks for the feedback!
Another interesting video. Glad to see a honest review. It is a lot of money to spend on food that was not done correctly. So many other places to spend my money in NYC.
You mentioned that perhaps that cut of meat was not their best. That may be true but for the money, it should have been well seasoned and charred on both sides. As any steak in a steak house should have been.
Yeah, I of course will not expect a rump/sirloin steak to taste like a ribeye, but the lack of seasoning was a letdown
The steak was cooked in a cast iron pan, so there won't be any char.
Love the videos, great job very informative!!!
They offered many steak choices. It really isn’t entirely fair for you to order the cheapest steak on the menu and compare it to other restaurants that don’t even serve such a cut. That’s not an apples to apples comparison. Having said that, I agree after having had the bone in rib-eye that the Hawksmoor simply isn’t the best steak in the city by a long shot
It isn’t the best, but it’s def solid. Especially the NY strip and other more premium cuts
I’ve been to hawksmoor a few times - the rib eye is excellent - I always get it with the beef dripping chips and peppercorn sauce 😆. UA you need to go to France the steak frites are incredible and so cheap - had one of the best steaks in my life for just 18 euros with chips and peppercorn sauce included!
I've never been to France and now I absolutely need to go!
I've never been to Hawksmoor NYC but I've been to the UK restaurants dozens of times. I've never been let down by the steak. It's always cooked to perfection.
The sides can be hit and miss. They're always good, but not always special.
The best thing is the atmosphere. Even the glitzy one in Canary Wharf is relaxed and you can visit in a hoodie and jeans.
Perhaps the UK ones are better or I ordered the wrong thing at the NYC location
as always a FIRE review from UA 🔥
i ate at hawksmoor in nov 2022 on a peak friday night and it felt like i was robbed lmao - the cuts of meat and their side dishes/sauces are for sure a step up from avg grocery store quality but my god i could cook a steak just as well if not better at home myself for a literal sixth of what i paid.
service was also ass; our waiter spoke so quietly in a room full of people even after we asked them to repeat themselves multiple times cuz we couldnt hear them.
3/10 experience would not go back / it made me question ever going to a 'fancy' steakhouse again lmao
I felt the service was excellent, but the food did not impress me. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing
This is one of your best reviews! Your comments/feedback are on point and your "final thoughts outside" are so honest and transparent. I hate all the kiss-ass reviews that some people are posting. Keep-up the great work!
Agree! One of the very few reviewers who are actually honest and don’t act like everything they taste is the food of gods
@@steveno7058 yeah he is definetly not Mark Wiens and thanks for that.
I disagree that this restaurant isn't great, but I've had several experiences and tried different menu items. UA's reviews are great and fun to watch. We can definitely agree on that!
Thanks! I always want to be honest about how I feel
Thanks UA! Even when you find a Restaurant underwhelming, your review is always interesting and fun to watch! Cheers!
Glad you still enjoyed the vid!
Was that cut a bit on the leaner side? Looked like it was from the video. Do you think this took away from the flavor? I tend to like fattier cuts like ribeye or NY strip
Yeah top sirloin (called rump at this place) will be more lean. Still, the lack of seasoning and crust throughout was disappointing
I was there and I agree with you. Good job.
Glad it wasn't just me!
I am from London UK and I had the Ribeye steak from Hawksmoor, Borough Market which was pretty poor. Very chewy. The highlight was the sticky toffee pudding 😊
Having lived in England for 5 years, your review of the steak is expected: great ingredients, but underseasoned.
Nothing to see here, just another balanced and well articulated review by UA Eats!
Hey UA, how do you like the book referenced at 3:03?
I'm really enjoying it!
A little parsley on that plate would have gone a long way..😅
They would have considered that a side salad and charged extra. Lol.
Presentation was a bit lacking
@@uaeats As they say, you eat with your eyes first.. And when I saw your plate, I lost appetite points..🤭
I actually have a rsvp there. So, I was looking to see what to eat there and now not sure if I want to go, lolz.
british cooking lacking seasoning? thats unheard of! 😱😂
Another winner video
Thanks!
I paid over $120 for the bone in rib eye and it was not very tender, despite being cooked perfectly medium rare. It feels like the quality of the meat there just isn't very high, and the prices are outrageous. My meal was around $250 with steak, salad, sides, bacon starter, dessert and tax and tip. After leaving a less than stellar review on Yelp, management did reach out earnestly to ask me back to fix the experience, which unless comped, would be a hard sell for me.
I had the ribeye in London and was just phenomenal
Peter Luger Steak 🥩 House Great Neck NY location 👍
I was not impressed with their Brooklyn location. Great Neck location better?
@@uaeatsif you go to the Great Neck location, I'll meet you there since it's my hometown. Could be fun.
Perfectly cooked steak in the broiler is the best. Nice char on the outside warm and juicy pink center!
Rump steak is Sirloin and I never get that because it is at the bottom of the list of tasty cuts.
Also If you return then I think that Hawksmoor really shines for their Sunday roast beef lunch, best in the city and their gravy is also to die for!
you should've added the bone marrow sauce! :D
Sounds delicious!
Comes down to the chefs in the kitchen and there experiance in the expertise of a perfact timed and seasoned steak .
Also up to the manager to over see the qulity to keep up good standards in a place like that .
😉🇦🇺👍awesome vlog .
Spot on about the dessert. Another accurate review. Been several times as I work close by and it's all OK to good, but never great (and should be for their prices) and they are a tad stingy on items they don't have to be. The ice cream in that dessert is a great example. Not sure about best steak house but I can tell you it's not Jose Andres' Bazaar Meat in Vegas.
Agreed, the dessert was quite disappointing
Good call on knowing a rump was a sirloin, I thought you ordered stew meat at first lol
Yeah UK and US use different words and some overlap (like sirloin in UK is a NY strip in the US). It can be confusing
Great honest review as always the presentation of the steak was like let's just plop it on the plate ! However it did look like a pretty good top round sirloin cooked perfectly or so. The Char thing wouldn't have bothered me as far as flavoring I'm sure you had salt and pepper Shaker on the table if you needed some and for $36 in New York City what can you hope for LOL the desert thing is a matter of taste and they all make it and present it differently what can we say it's all a matter of personal taste
True, but I felt this place had a reputation as arguably the best steakhouse in the UK. I was expecting a bit more
Is this your review or UAs? You didn't eat here so shut ya mouth
To try Hawksmoor properly you need to go for ribeye + equally important: mash potatoes and creamed spinach.
The sides in general are the best I have ever treid in any steakhouse around the world.
Maybe I'll try it again sometime!
you missed the best part. the duck fat french fries.
How dfid those errands work out for you?
Dude, you're in New York!! And you're eating at Hawksmoore! $50 is indeed an appropriate price for that establishment and you're complaining about the cost?? You don't go to Hawksmore and penny pinch. You go to spend $$$ on a delicious steak along with sides.
Shouldn't you start wearing a disguise or something, like the bigshot New York food critics? Otherwise it's going to be; "Hey there's UA, we better not screw this up."
If only I were that big that restaurants immediately recognized me! Prob not quite there yet
I found Keen's underwhelming...steak was underseasoned, took a long time, and the table next to us was drunk beyond reason (and they dropped plates/cups!). IDC how wealthy they are, that they didn't even address their behavior was disappointing. Nice vibes tho.
UA it's good of you to find best price, but more importantly to order the 'same' cut of meat at each steakhouse. Otherwise not fair to compare.
Since you like sear so much, why do you never order your stake Pittsburgh style?
Wow no sauce or anything came with the steak! Not a great presentation for that type of money.
That was my thought too. Just the steak on plate. Gordon Ramsey pay them a visit. They are English like you.
It could've at least used a few sprigs of thyme for presentation
That steak was cheap.
They probably went overboard with the dates used to make the pudding.. or used a different variety to the other ones you tried
Rump steak aka Picania!
This review is odd. He’s comparing the cheapest cut to higher cuts at other spots? Zero sides? No high end steakhouse has mains that come with sides. Kind of hard to judge this place with that incomplete order.
Your book... i live ya and am alwaya happy when you deop a vdeo :)
I think they gave a crappy portion and it’s hard to give a good review for picking a cheap steak most restaurants won’t offer.
Pretty '''CHEAP ''' on the size of the the Steak ...The '''WHOLE PLACE '''
seems on the CHEAP and not giving You a Good Meal ...
They served the dessert while you were still eating the steak?
$36 dollars for a smaller lower quality cut of unseasoned steak with no sides whatsoever. Ya, I would have been upset paying $20 for that meal.
St Elmo’s steakhouse. Indianapolis IN
Thanks for the rec!
If that steak had the same crust all over, it would`ve been what`s called.... " charred "............There has to be a soft spot in the middle..........nice video.....👍
Please do a collab video with Peaks100
The ice cream was in the shape of a quenelle.
Raisin taste is probably dates.
(I prefer it without - or at least, so I don't notice them)
It definitely was but other sticky toffee puddings I've had did not have such an overwhelming date flavor
Hardly the WHOLE UK...
Dublin

Does that Steak not have any sauce for it? I mean don't they serve with a sauce nor salad/toppings?
I think here: A tiny spoon Balsamic Vinegar besides salt & pepper would enhance the Flavor to a next level of that Plain Steak:) or at least a dark sauce...
The best steak in the world is the one you cook yourself at home. Go to a good butcher, spend 50, 100 whatever. Take it home, let it get to room temp and off you go. Whether its in a heavy pan with butter and salt or over a grill, thats the best steak you will ever have.
Cast iron is the way to go!
You don't need any butter in a cast iron pan.
Was at the seven dials hawksmoor, our keg in ontario tasted better. I am very sorry to say. Had big expectations, maybe i over-expected.
No side orders? I would not like to eat a steak without something on the side like potatoes or vegetables or both
Fair point. I will be completely transparent though, these steakhouses are expensive. I could only afford either dessert or a side and I chose dessert since I heard it was highly recommended
When he said rump steak was top sirloin..... 🤔
Wow that steak was small and ya I wouldn't rush to spend 45$ w tip for italone
It was quite tiny
Good review. I went to Hawksmoor and the most tender cut, filet mignon, was scarily tough and stringy. It looked like no other filet mignon I had ever had before, and it didn't look good! Even the server agreed that the meat was strangely fibrous, although the staff didn't see too contrite about it. Sides were meh. Huge disappointment. Trendiness over inherent quality. And EXPENSIVE.
It wasn't explained so I will ask here: Is the steak served in the UK British beef and is the steak served in the NYC is American? If so, isn't there a difference in taste?
From scotland & i have never heard of them before. That steak was not worth the $$$. Love you're videos. But this is in no way like here in the U.K You really need to Come over.
Go to Edinburg if you need to spend 25 pounds on a Rump steak but I will say they have much better prices than in NYC!!
I definitely want to visit the UK soon to make a few vids!
I like your videos and fair play the sear wasn't great, but you can't compare apples to oranges , Old Homestead is like 16 ounces and it was priced appropriately this is almost half the price just saying.
Hawksmoor UK started in 2006 i think
Take a shot every time UA says UK
haha
Try Smith and Wolensky in midtown east next
It's on the list!
Strip House 12th st.
The one in Manchester is excellent
I believe it!
Also the sticky toffee pudding doesn't look anywhere near as glamorous as Gordon Ramsay's.
I actually felt Hawksmoor's looked better, but Ramsay's tasted way better
Hawksmoor is epic, yiu chose the wrong steak. Budget option. Bone in rib and porterhouse are as good as anywhere ive eaten in nyc. Love ur vids though
That looked cooked great. I don’t think it was worth anywhere near $36. More like $15, haha
Goodmans
should have at least gotten the ribeye. you can't get literally the worst cut of beef and judge the entire experience based on that. Their rib chop and ribeye are the best I've had in nyc
No rump in scotland is a braising steak for casserole ua.
That seems insanely expensive for a steak!
It would have been a more fair price if the steak were bigger or came with a side
Rump steak here in the UK is the cheapest cut of steak here.
Really?
The size of a paperback.
Sounds about right
Wrong choice at Hawksmoor - they excel at daily steaks of 800g to 1.2 kilos people share, different cuts as well.
They ought to rename that steak the pee wee
Have watched numerous reviews by UA and fail to understand. Most people go out to eat for a great experience and foods you crave or the exotic and interesting. But he continuously orders the cheapest items, mains only, this was ridiculous, cheapest cut, no starter, no sides. No one goes out to eat like this, spend a few bucks! You should call this channel Cheap Skate Dinning!
That steak really was underwhelming-- and with no sides and minimal seasoning you can't really recover. Dessert was a dud with that tiny quenelle of ice cream. That's an avoid for me---thanks UA! Thumbs up!
The ice cream definitely needed to be a bigger portion
Sides dishes are extra, just like in most steak houses.
Looks like a 12oz steak to me. 3/4 of a pound isn't very big
UA you got short changed 😅
I had never never seen a restaurant seving a bare steak on a plate, the saddest presentation ever.
What the???? If you had a question about the cut you ask the people, you don't sit around trying to guess what is! That doesn't make any sense. Not a good review
you are definitely a steak guy
You're not wrong!
Enough with the crust already squinty!
