- In this extended footage from Hong Kong, Soke Inoue explains the deeper connection from KATA to real fighting application. The images of ending, fixed postures of kata or match-play of competition kumite can dominate our "karate consciousness" but neither is realistic as it relates to applying karate in a life and death situation. Real application starts "on the way" and is not 1-2 timing, but "1!" from the start through the finish.

this man is a genius.. im shotokan but can relate to this .. i wshed i could have trained under this sensei truly great man oss
what a great insight.............what a great teacher..................oss Sensei..........your teaching will always guide us........
Why doesn't he demonstrate the full movements, not just bits of movement, why show the full techniques slowly then at speed
I can't hear what he says he thinks is the reason for pauses in kata? I think at the end he's saying kata is good for health? Other reasons too, but I can't make it out. Does he say 'fun' at one point? Good for joints?
What i got was that when he was young he hated Kata, he only wanted to Kumite. His sensei kept making him do it, but he didn't see the purpose of it and the stances were hard and tyring. When he got more experienced he realised kata was good and useful when performed purposefully and, of course, the stances get your legs and your joints strong.
"I didn't know important. NOW I know important. Okay?"
Precisely what my shihan says. When he was young it was all about kumite. Now he teaches 1/3 of kihon, kata, and kumite.
