I think this method is wrong. I like Kanazawa's approach better: you begin the rotation of the fist midway already, so that you get a Tate-Zuki midway.

I actually started practicing this on my own with no instruction to work on my snap back and stretch my leg ligaments. It also helps me learn to keep my back straight since I have a tendency to lean forward too much.

Excellent! Is there a video showing the complete takedown afterwards? I’d really like to see it broken down. Close quarters grappling and takedowns/throws are a component of karate I’ve only recently learned about and would love to know more

Obviously you have no idea of what his background was. He used to do a lot of bare knuckle fighting in his early years. Regardless he is teaching an exercise to show how the hips are where the power comes from. READ this part again - It's an exercise not an actual karate technique. Nobody cares about your 'creditals' getting a black belt is not hard. Also have some respect. It's poor form to dis someone that has passed away.
