Quick tip for chainshots and demasting: aim for the crossbar on the mast where the horizontal and vertical points meet, even hitting the crow’s nest chops the mast

true, but imo the sword is easy to dodge
No. The reason why Eye of Reach & Blunderbuss is so prevalent is because they cover each other's weaknesses while allowing for one shot potential. If you fire blunder and get unlucky, as long as you hit 3 pellets, the Eye of Reach will kill before they can regenerate health. The Eye of Reach has high base damage but can't kill with an atrocious reload time, so it's used to secure or pressure.
There is no other setup to use as a helmsman. You can't snipe with other guns the cannoneers or helmsman unless you're close enough to board, and you want your Blunderbuss to guard against boarding from the water.
The setup you suggested is bad because the slow time to kill will get you killed by anyone running the suggested combo. Land a shot, that's 55 damage, now you need to swing the sword twice at close range- 25+25+55= 105. Or, a lunge + shot, but let's be honest, lunging makes you a sitting duck and you're probably gonna get shot out of it before you can finish it.
When i played sot (before new weapons, but got skele curse) i used sword and eye just becuase i like all the movement sword gives you (hopping out of enemy's eye shot is so satisfying), but in duos, as a helmsman and canoneer if my friend boarding, i always used doublegun, because its just makes sense: bussy for ladder guarding, eye for sniping, sometimes, with the help of a snipe we secured nasty kills.

Try to drop their mast with chain shots, cannon balls or scattershots and if that doesn't work just keep shooting out and if that doesn't even work, just ram strat best.
