    Nice video! I just want to add this: chainshots are not only for masts, but do a great amount of damage on wheel and capstan as well. Often when you hit the mast and already have another chainshot loaded, instead of unloading it you can try to hit the wheel/capstan.

    In all my times on SoT I've always dubbed the cannon-canoe-with-nothing-to-lose to be an absolute menace.
    A full ship of players that's firing cannons and spinning on their opponent can be nearly impossible to sink if their shots are good enough.

    Excellent video Blurbs, thank you!
    In my opinion the best piece of advice in this video is to straighten the wheel when your mast is hit by chain, particularly for solo players.
    If looking to stock chainshot, they can be found in good quantities in sunken shipwrecks and barrels of plenty in the ocean. Outposts and forts will usually have a decent amount if you check all barrels on the island.
    I don't like engaging in a fight with less than 20 chains.

    I kinda have mixed feelings that you made this.. this has been my #1 advantage on the seas for so long. Being a soloslooper you have to do everything yourself, bucket, repairs, ship manouvering, boarding, chainshots and canons. Im not the greatest hand to hand and Im mostly dominated by double gunners and sea dog legends. The field that keeps me on the victorious side is my ability to consistantly hit chainshots. I hit atleast 4/5 shots even at the most challenging distances. The avg player hits less then 1/5. I guess its time to up my game at hand to hands.

    I actually did some "advanced" testing with chainshots vs. cannonballs and came back with some...interesting results:
    Firstly, chainshots are technically NOT heavier (by mass) than normal cannonballs. In fact, they have the same MASS, but have double G, or gravitational constant. This gives them double downward force, which is double the WEIGHT, but they have the SAME velocity.
    *EXPLANATION*
    The testing for this was done using a stopwatch and of course, the cannon in waters near an island to sacrifice a tiny amount of data accuracy for convenience of grabbing more shots for testing (because of small waves even near the island). The experiment was testing the velocity of shots by firing and hitting the stopwatch to hit the same target, with proper adjustment for chainshots or a player. To hit the same target from a short distance (3 ish seconds to land a cannonball), it was discovered that chainshots (and players) land almost the same time, even when adjusted for chainshot drop (the difference was like +.5 seconds or something before a hit). Since SoT projectiles ignore air resistance, the same was tested at the angle where maximum range would be achieved, (45 degrees). When this was tested, it was found that standard cannonballs go nearly one map sector, and have a 11.5s time to splash (roughly). Confusing, however, is the chainshot's time to splash being half that, at around 5.75s, and only travelling roughly half a map sector.
    This confused me heavily. Since games generally simulate real life physics, then many physics ideas can be applied, and the cannonballs and the chainshots should always have the same proportion to hit time. To conclude the experiment, I fired the cannon as close to straight up as possible, firing first a cannonball, then myself (as players have the EXACT same trajectory as a chainshot). At the top of my arc, I attempted to observe the height of the cannonball. It was found the cannonball was just about exactly double my height.
    Using some algebraic math, I was able to determine the part about the gravity. Firstly, the closer you get to 0 degrees of deviation from the point where the cannon was fired, the closer the two time to hit between chainshot and cannonballs times are together. To achieve this, they must have the same velocity.
    The more they need to arc before hitting the target, however, the more different their times become.
    The equation for kinetic energy is K = 1/2 * m * v^2, where M is mass (not weight) and V is velocity. We know that V for cannonballs must be equal to V for chainshots from their short range testing. Their exact mass is unknown. This will be useful momentarily.
    Additionally, we must bring gravitational potential energy into this. To solve for the gravitational potential energy above the ground, we can use U = m * G * h, where m is mass, G is the gravitational acceleration constant, and h is the height above the ground.
    Finally, it can be all put together. If we assumed for a moment that the cannons applied the same amount of chemical energy (we'll call it "C"), then the chainshots should leave slower out of the cannon due to the kinetic energy equation, 1/2 * m * v^2. If chainshots were twice as massive, then to achieve the same velocity like with what was found, the cannon would have to put in twice the amount of energy into the chainshot. If we assume the arbitrary mass of a cannonball is 1M, and a chainshot is twice as heavy as said cannonballs (I'll show why twice exactly in a moment), then we can name chainshot mass to be 2M.
    However, we know from the straight up firing test that the height of the cannonball was roughly double of a chainshot (or rather, me in the test). Given the equation for gravitational energy, and assuming the mass of a cannonball is M and the mass of a chainshot is 2M, then we can substitute the values into the equation, to to get M * G * H for cannonballs, and 2M * G * H for chainshots. Since air resistance doesn't exist in SoT, then the energy at the top of the arc for each ammunition type must be equal to the kinetic energy at the base of the arc where the velocity is greatest.
    From this we get:
    M * G * H = 1/2 * M * V^2 (V is the same for both ammunition)
    2M * G * 1/2H = 1/2 * 2M * V^2
    However, this presents a problem. If we simplify out some of the constants:
    M * G * H = 1/2 * M * V^2
    M * G * H = M * V^2
    Uh oh! Look at that. M * G * H is equal to two different things! Let's plug in some arbitrary numbers and see what we get. Let's say their mass M is 10, the height H of a cannonball is 100, and the gravitational constant G is also 10. We can then solve for their velocities. Watch what happens.
    (10)(10)(100) = 1/2(10)(V^2) --> 10000 = 5V^2 --> 2000 = V^2 --> sqrt(2000) = V
    (10)(10)(100) = (10)(V^2) --> 10000 = 10V^2 --> 1000 = V^2 --> sqrt(1000) = V
    According to the test, the two velocities should be SIGNIFICANTLY different! ( sqrt(2000) is 44.721, and sqrt(1000) is 31.622). This contradicts their time to hit testing which proved they have the same velocity! But if the cannon were to put double energy into a chainshot, then they should absolutely have the same height, and therefore would have the exact same trajectory (which we know isn't the case).
    Watch this: If instead of chainshots having twice the mass, we assume they have twice the gravity...
    M * G * H = 1/2 * M * V^2
    M * 2G * 1/2H = 1/2 * M * V^2
    Simplify the constants...
    M * G * H = 1/2 * M * V^2
    M * G * H = 1/2 * M * V^2
    Lookit! It's happy now! When solved with the same numbers as before, both spit out sqrt(2000) as their velocity, so both are 44.721, proving that we can have both the same velocity when exiting the cannon AND still have one half the height when shot straight up in the air. Therefore, chainshots and players must have double the gravity coefficient of cannonballs.
    Note: Because of this, chainshot WEIGHT is in fact double. This is proven by the equation for force, F = M * A where F is force, M is mass, and A is an acceleration constant (in the case of gravity). Since chainshots have double the acceleration but the same mass, they experience double the force downward, which in the context of gravity, is WEIGHT.

    By far the most annoying fucking things on the planet.. I’m malding rn over a solo killing my 3 man brig by chainshotting both our masts and then constantly firing cannons to keep us from raising the masts again. Makes for very frustrating and boring gameplay. ( yes I know it’s a feature and I should “get good,” but it’s still the most frustrating feature of the game for me. Also the hit reg feels weird. Maybe it’s my ping from playing on my friends servers? I’m not too sure but they sometimes hit when they completely miss the ship.
