Kudos to the runner for catching all nine napping.
At least four were involved directly; the shortstop couldn’t moved over to cover second base the second baseman can stop picking his nose and go back to business they probably get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars every year if not more WTF. Put me in cold,I’m ready to out-play these guys… And I was born in 1770!
Well, kudos to the 1st base coach for noticing and letting the runner know. Good coaching staff.
Really good situational awareness by the runner. He even knew how long it would take for the ball to be caught so he was able to casually jog back to first.
A lot of infield defense coaches tell the 2B and SS that one of them must ALWAYS be near the bag (2nd) when there is a runner on first to avoid this from happening.
They also need to be paying attention. The fielder was close enough to the bag already. It needs to be more than just field position.
2:01 2:04
There are so many baseball games that even if they "know" they're supposed to do this, it's so easy to get complacent and lazy 1 time. That's why the best coaches don't rely on you remembering the 1 time they told you. They remind you. Constantly.
What do the infield offense coaches tell them?

What sucks is he didn’t get credit for a stolen base or any stat. I understand that’s the proper scoring since it’s still part of the same play, but wish he could be rewarded for that as a stat. Guess helping the team win will have to suffice. 😊
@@scottchisholm7580 it has to count as SOMETHING right? Is it just considered a sac fly?
@@5wiftNinja387 A sac fly is 99% scoring a runner from third, occasionally a runner from second might get all the way home but if he only gets to third it wouldn’t be a sac fly. In this instance a stolen base might be more appropriate, but even then this shouldn’t go against the P/C unit. However, let’s say runner gets out at second on this play would caught stealing make sense? I think so, but then that would negate a double play which it should be because the original play never ended. The things that keep me up at night.

Tap tap, ooh, free base! Lol, Anto you do a great job finding these cool baseball moments, I love it! I love when players find whatever it (legally) takes to win!
Ya'know who is watching the whole time.... The Umpires. Good job guys.
Except the umpires missed the illegal touch by the base coach. That is interference and the runner is out.
@@holmj12 Nobody is going to consider a bum tap to be physically assisting the runner in returning to or leaving third base or first base.
Except it is, the tap assisted the runner to go to 2nd, if I see that as the umpire, I gotta call coaches interference and runner is out. Any physical contact from a base coach communicating to a runner to go or stay is coach’s interference.
Yeah the tap is "illegal", but isn't that like travelling in the NBA?
This is MLB, it was a tap, not holding the runner from overrunning the bag or picking them up if they fell, to take the next base.

My grandson's nine year old LL team had a player get a walk and went on to 2nd when the catcher was throwing the ball back to the pitcher. Heads up for a nine year old.
That happened to me when i was 8 years old. i was so confused. I had no idea you could even do that😂
@@TonyF5555, ball called at the plate are live balls. Strikes are live. Foul tips are live . Uncaught ( droped third strikes ) third strikes are live balls for the most part! And you keep playing them as such untill you are 1000% sure of the rules. Good luck young fella!
I had a six year old Tballer who once in a game just starts running from 1st regardless what’s the situation and the panick and confusion he causes on the opposing team would lead to errors and in >50% time to an inside the park little league home run.
Yup, happens all the time at that level.
My younger brother was thirsty for steals in high school one year. He was a husky 6'2" junior that played catcher, but was second on the team in steals because he was so good at reading the pitcher's motions before their wind up. Too many players get into routines that a head's up player can exploit.
Baseball is a mysterious magical game. There are so many moving parts to a baseball game. Those players who don't get caught up in just playing but are looking outside the box and really paying attention can make amazing plays. Once, a long time ago, when I was sitting in the third base area seats, I watched Pete Rose casually walk home while 3rd base player, catcher, umpire, and pitcher were not paying attention and they all had this stunned look on their face when he stepped on home, like, "what are you doing here?"
1:44 At least the Umps had their heads in the game
Except the umpires missed the illegal touch by the base coach. That is interference and the runner is out.
@@holmj12, umps are mostly eyes on the ball. When you have a four man crew , things are a little different! It's not interference, but aiding the runner. Did he aid the runner? How so? Did he push him? Did this tap help him in anyway to get an advantage to second base? The runner took two normal steps after this tap. So how can this be aiding the runner? You have to AID the runner . A simple tap on the butt is not considered aiding. This happens alot at third base. Slowing a runner after touching the bag,or , giving him a PUSH. But not that tap on the bum.
@@holmj12Only if it is deemed as assistance. Coaches are allowed to make contact with runners, just not assist them with contact. In this case, no assistance by contact happened. Ruling on field stands, runner is allowed to stay on 2nd base. Go Predators!

You're right, that extra 90 feet can make a huge difference. That's why I don't understand why the sacrifice bunt is so rare these days. The lead off hitter gets on first, the next batter bunts him over. Then you have two good hitters with a chance to drive him home.
Oh, how I loved old-time baseball, from the 60s, 70s & 80s.

Thanks, Matt. This reminds me of Little League Baseball - my personal, painful experience.
We lost a lot and we had our heads down all the time. Hell, I even fell for the hidden ball trick making the last out in one game.
Got to high school abd and tried out four years - getting cut each year. But I learned something about Baseball IQ and how not only must you, "Keep your eye everlastingly on the ball," but also that you'd better, "Keep your head evelastingly in the game."
Good job Matt! Thanks a lot
The catcher puts his hands up like "guys what the hell"
He can help out by yelling requesting Time out when he notices middle infielders are not paying attention. The pitcher has long walk back to mound just toss the ball to first baseman next time. Hold the runner. Or just call time. Hehe 😂
I really enjoy your videos. Keep it up.
Great analysis!!
Great job with these anecdotes on plays in baseball. Keep it up.
It’s about time the halos do something correct!
Thank you to Ron Washington!!!
My son has elite speed and has made a living preying off dopey pitchers and catchers since he was 8 years old (now 17 and still does it). He did it 6X last year playing rep/travel ball, where the players are 'supposed' to be attuned to this type of thing lol.....a few got angry because they were enbarrassed, and their games imploded after that play...it can be a game changer.
Same thing on defense. So many base runners talk to coaches, guys in the dugout, even the defender. An alert pitcher with his teammates wary that he's always watching can pick off nearly 1 batter a game at most levels.
Good work
Beautiful
Way back when I was in Little League a teammate was walked, so jogged to first and casually made a left turn at the bag and jogged to second. He was thrown out because for some reason he felt jogging would be more subtle. I think if a player takes off as soon as he hits first base on a walk he probably has a good chance to make it under the right circumstances.
Baseball is NOT boring!!! Regardless of whose idea it was, it was a brilliant move. Excellent example of high baseball IQ.
You're Killing Me Smalls!
Thanks for sharing this! I would teach this heads up baserunning to all my youth players for years. Now that they are in high school, some of them are stealing bases with ease, including home! Baseball IQ all the way. I don't care how athletic or strong you are, if you don't have a great understanding of the rules and how to read players and their tendencies, baseball is going to very difficult for them.
I also focused a lot on base running as a youth coach. My favorite was having 10u players tag up on foul balls. Player catches the ball and celebrates. Maybe shows the ball to mom. Mean while we are tagging up and running those bases.
Another way of working this is to just make it a habit of calling for time as soon as you are able. Then you can put your head down and think about the next play. Either way, if the ball is live, never take your eyes off the ball and/or runner.
Great fundamentals.
Get that ball out of play as soon as you can. Keep your head in the game.
Good video.
Thank you. You can win by the errors the other team makes. Play smart, communicate and know what is happening.
This was GREAT! I see situations like this in so many games, where an aggressive runner could take that
extra 90ft...IF...everyone wasn't so conditioned to play station-to-station. This is especially true for teams
playing against the A's and other bottom rung teams! Live in bay area and attend many A's game. Every
other game, another team moves from 1st to 2nd/2nd to 3rd because players are looking down, away
into oblivion! Strange! Fans can actually see it "just" before it happens & start screaming. Players think
fans are getting excited for nothing & stay in "oblivion". Then afterward, THE PLAYERS PUT THEIR
HANDS ON THEIR HIPS IN DISGUST...AS THE BOOS ERUPTS! I don't see this much in college games!
The coaches are too much of a "stickler" and don't patronize the players as the majors do. You either
perform or you sit on the bench. Would you or others say, while certainly by no means is college baseball
the most proficient, college baseball/AA/3A are still probably the "purest" form of baseball? That is, no
regards to name recognition, obviously...no "he's paid blah, blah"! So if a bunt situation is presented, then
"THAT" is what is "called", and that's what is "attempted" & "no one" cares about "who" you are. See so
many times a guy on 3rd base, no outs and everyone is swinger for the fence, getting struck out, pop out,
grounded out, when a halfway decent bunt would bring the guy home as far back as the infield is playing.
Why? Because, this guy can't bunt, won't bunt, too proud to bunt. 3 guys in a row & no attempt to bunt!
Runner left on 3rd! That is not major league play of yesteryear! However, it's today's standard play.
Bravo! MLB is rotting from the head down.
Love me some free 90s
j could be a Baseball fan after watching some cool stuff like this, i like the thinking. Not convinced yet.
That's the kind of thing my son used to do in rec ball, but you don't expect to see it in the big leagues!

Perfect sac fly
It reminds me of that one time when a guy stole first base during a power failure and no one noticed until it was too late. I think there was a rule change after that.
Love the strategy.
Reliever comes in ready to pitch
One question: baseball has a lot of non-action and maintaining full concentration over that length of time is a feat for champion chess players.
How much does one actually have to have full concentration and can you speak to the “mental game”?
I think he just did.
That was the consequence of not. Explain it in the positive, as you would to your players.
Every live ball is an opportunity. There is nothing difficult about paying attention. If you can’t be bothered then go back to the dugout
For the most part, when the bases are empty, there is not much too much to think about as a position player. But as soon as there is even one guy on the bases, there are so many things to be prepared for that will give you an advantage over the opponent if you are ready for them

Who had the ball when he took off? Pitcher or first baseman?
Pitcher I think, but there was nobody covering the bag to throw it to.
First baseman but he didn’t have anyone to throw, pitcher was too far and second baseman/short stop were looking in the wrong direction to receive the ball.
The pitcher had the ball.
@@0tucthe pitcher had the ball.
The pitcher had the ball and could've EASILY tagged this guy out at 2:05 because second base stepped in just before it was too late but the pitcher just tanked the play. Even if the runner turned around he'd have been caught in the pickle. Fire the pitcher. He cost the team that score the runner got on the next batter.

So when does an umpire call timeout after a play and when do they not?
wow that was Schanuel too barely out of college.

To me you should just get the mindset everything matters. There are always different ways to get success not just in Baseball but in other sports to. This play just shows that anything can happen at any time given everything goes right.
Is it scoed sac fly or a steal?
40 years ago I was on 2nd base and the catcher kept lobbing the ball back to the pitcher after every pitch while I was way off the bag. So I decided im going the next time he 🌈 s it back to the pitcher. So as designed I took off and all the other teams coaches and players are screaming at their players “he’s goin he’s goin. I had no intention of going home until the pitcher whips it over to third as I’m about to stop on the base but the third baseman had no clue I just ran
behind him or that the pitcher threw it in his direction and the throw went right by him because he was confused as to what everyone was going ballistic about.
So I ended up easily going home as the ball was rolling up to the third base side fence.
My coach wasn’t sure what happened when I got back to the bench but I do remember him half smiling saying don’t ever do that again
The end😅

Would that make it a sac fly?
No, he already retreated to the base and had completely stopped his momentum. Would be scored as a stolen base, at least I would think
no, for sac fly a runner most score at home plate. That's not like sac hit where base advance is enough. I'm also for stolen base.
Free bases!
it’s a big deal… in softball it’s 60 feet but the team i coach is right in that age where the dropped third strike is happening a lot…. Which means we stress like CRAZY getting off of first base to keep it open for the dropped 3rd strike….
tonight we were down 23-7 and we ended up losing 24-25, our comeback strategy was to just run every single pitch
Okay. You might have cleared-up something for me. Years ago (about 60 to be exact), I was involved in a similar play. I had hit a double and then stolen third. While on third, I noticed that after every pitch, the pitcher would walk toward the catcher to receive the ball and then slowly walk back to the mound with his head down. So, being fleet of foot, I couldn’t let this pass. The next time he walked back to the mound, I broke for home and was called safe. But the plate umpire changed his mind and sent me back to third and said it was a dead ball until the pitcher returned to the mound. So, in this video clip the pitcher hasn’t returned to the mound yet. So, was I actually safe and scored a run, or did these professional umpires blow the call? Which is it?
Was that Little League? Seems I might recall a rule like that in LL but don't recall for certain. I don't think that a thing in MLB. I was always told pretty much to call time-out after a play like this. But maybe that is something not allowed now with pitch clocks.
Little League has tighter restrictions on stealing. At some levels, stealing home is banned completely.
No. It was not Little League. I was 19 and playing in the many adult leagues that existed in San Francisco at that time. Little League may have been somewhere in the Bay Area, but it didn’t exist in my area. Thanks for your reply, but I’m still curious.
Whats this scored as?
tell me more about the firstbase coach not suposed to touch the runner.
So is that considered a stolen base or a sacrifice fly?
Now you know, that is just so casual
Is there anything about the first base coach being on the field of play during a live ball? It looks like he’s in fair territory to me.
I think you mispoke (or mistyped) "field of play" when you meant to say "fair territory" (which you do mention fair territory at the end of your comment). Technically the base coach is always in the field of play when their team is batting. Just want to clarify that foul territory can be part of the field of play.
Base coaches are supposed to be in their box during live play but can move out for certain situations (ex. Allow a fielder to catch a fly ball or give a signal to a runner). The big "no-no" here was touching the runner during live play, which if seen would have resulted in an out.
@@holmj12 I knew about touching a player, but was wondering about the coach being in fair territory. Can anyone recall any call made against a coach being in fair territory?

Good rule for life - "Always keep your head in the game." I'll bet that player has probably failed to steal a base lots of times. This time it was successful.
Gotta know how many outs there are when the play starts. That’s super important. Maybe I missed something.
not really. Getting to second means any single scores him, first needs probably a triple or HR scores him in one AB. There's a reason man on second is "scoring position" The sac bunt was invented because in some situations the man at second is worth more than the out.
Zapruder would be proud.
Great analysis.

Is that technically tagging up?

Why does he need to go back to 1st?
If the fielder drops the ball and then throws to first who is out?
"Why does he need to go back to 1st?"
Rules of the game. If the batter flies out (the ball is caught), base runners can still attempt to advance to the next base, but they must first tag up (be on their original base) after the ball is caught.
"If the fielder drops the ball and then throws to first who is out?"
The batter running to first. The base runner on first would be attempting to get to second. However I'm not an expert on baseball, so others may correct me.
@@maxfan1591 As you can tell I am not a baseball watcher. When I played a long time ago (primary school) it was running for base from the time the bat hit the ball that was allowed.

Angels have been good at manufacturing runs for a while.
Umps are looking to call time and are looking for the runner to tag up.
Caught ‘em sleeping. No one was covering second.
But doesn't the runner have to stop if the play is yielded by the ball being caught? I'm not too familiar with the rules of baseball, but wouldn't it be a dead ball after it was caught?
Nope, as long as it’s not the 3rd out, the ball is live until the next batter is called to the plate.
When the ball is caught, all runners must return to the base they were on before the pitch, at which point they are free to stay where they are or attempt to steal.
Additionally, the ball still being alive means the fielders can tag out the runners if they don’t get back to their own base in time
😎
Is it considered a stolen base?
Classic, you can always Advance, defence never sees this , usually oh well let’s all assume he’s gonna stay there, there’s no time out for base runners…
Has any player pretended to be out and causally walk to 2nd like he was going to the visitor's dugout?
Yea you are taught as a defense and as an offense to be alert at all times and so as a defense and when this ball was caught time out should have been called. But as an offense and defensively you can lull the offense or defense to sleep by doing what this runner did. But the runner realized that nobody had called time out and the defense never called time out. So this was heads up baseball from a base runners perspective
Time out after a catch? No reason to ever tag up then.
A caught ball is still live, even in foul territory.
@@fifiwoof1969
Yes if timeout isn't called after the catch is made then it's a live ball but that is only if the ball is caught on the infield. But if the ball is caught in the outfield and they throw to the cut off man then they need to call time out once the play is over or it's a live ball if they don't call time out
@@Mitten4371 I've seen runners run on a caught foul ball - must still be live.
@@fifiwoof1969
Yea if the defense doesn't call timeout and they have to be aware of the runners on base and how many outs that there are at all times. Because if not then things like this can happen and also you have to run the ball in just in case the base runners decide to take off. I was always taught to communicate on the baseball field and if this runner decides to take off well then somebody on the infield should have been yelling. But this runner caught everybody sleeping on this play but it also depends on what the score is because without anyone paying attention. That runner could have been the go ahead run that was put in scoring position. So that's why it's important to know how many outs there are and what the score is
@@fifiwoof1969 yes, that's why you will occasionally see an outfielder purposely not catch a long foul ball if a runner on 3rd could easily tag and score.
