    Superb breakdown as always, Ben. DeGrom is fascinating not only because he's so good, but he's a very late bloomer who's demonstrating "the impossible", that is the ability to continue to improve one's power/velocity into your 30's.

    • @brettcarlson5450
      @brettcarlson5450 Před 3 lety +7

      I would not call him a late bloomer per say. He did not even begin to pitch until his JR. year in college. So in reality, his arm has 1000s of less miles than say Kershaw, which allows him the strength to achieve these leaps. If he had been a pitcher since he was a little leaguer, it is doubtful he would have ever reach 100mph. The majesty of deGrom is really the fact he was not a pitcher and no one thought he was going to be a good pitcher once he switched. He is the same age as Kershaw and has over 1000 less innings pitched in his career. That is a key factor people do not realize. His arm is still fresh. Allowing for an easier transition into mechanically efficiency.

    Great video, great analysis! Efficient movement, and with throwing, is biomechanically using length/tension, movement, rhythm, posture (everything you've pointed out!) With throwing more efficient, you will be using length/tension relationships, just like your citing Javelin throwing. To be an efficient Javelin thrower, you must create, via technique, and tissue development, massive and quick stretch shortening cycles. With the center of mass moving, and then braking/blocking to create (efficiently) linear and rotational force. This rapid and violent blocking is efficient, but is quite damaging to the body. A good Javelin thrower knows about pain! (of course, pitchers as well!) So despite being more efficient, it does take a toll on soft/connective tissue, and somewhere in the biomechanical chain it can be difficult not to over stress at any point. Looking at DeGrom's season, I think he fits into that statement. Despite his excellent efficiency of movement, the forces created can take a toll.

    This video is so good. Please make a video on how to improve your mobility because a lot of is it genetics, but it too can be improved like strength training. For example look at 48:20. Look at the scapular mobility. There is also so much different info on training mobility that I don't know what to believe. For instance many say to never twist your spine because you shouldn't rotate your lumbar spine. So how are you supposed to improve thoracic rotation. It could really help a lot if you just made a simple video on how to improve thoracic rotation, thoracic extension, scapular mobility etc with different excerises. Ik a lot could benefit from it.

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 lety +2

      Appreciate the comment - to clarify your confusion, the lumbar spine isn't designed to rotate anywhere near as much as the thoracic spine. So some movements (like prone scorpions) target rotation at the lumbar spine which is why they are widely criticized. It is highly influenced by genetics as well, but can be improved like you mention.
      Here are a couple t-spine mobility videos to watch:

I was in hs throwing about 85. And haven’t thrown a pitch in years. Radar now at 26 with a little bit more grown man strength and knowledge I was skinning 90 have no idea how but my arm is about to fall off (too old and out of shape) Haven’t even thrown a baseball in years. Very interesting. I tend to relate everything to the golf swing, so the first thing I looked for was an improvement in his X-factor (differential between shoulder turn and hip turn), and sure enough, that had improved. A lot of golfers have talked about feeling like they are taking longer in their backswings as well as trying to be more relaxed when they need to hit it further. This is the effect of turning the shoulders more against the turning of the hips, which takes longer than a less efficient X-factor.
    To me, deGrom is more rotational in his throwing than Karinchak, so it makes sense that lowering his arm slot would help him get more turn. Karinchak looks more tilt to tilt, so it makes sense raising his arm slot would give him more power. It's similar to the differences between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in the early 60s. Both hit the ball a long way. Palmer did it with a flat swing, Nicklaus did it with an upright swing.
    One thing I don't recall hearing is that a 0° vertical angle is the shortest distance the ball can travel, so the more one's angle deviates from 0°, the slower, in essence, the ball will appear to be traveling relative to the plate from the pitcher, yes?

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 lety +1

      Very interesting post. I hadn't considered it yet, but a 0 degree VAA would technically be the shortest distance the ball can travel. Not sure if that's significant, given that releasing the ball a full foot closer to the target than MLB average only gives you ~1 mph of perceived velocity.

    you don't get velo from increasing your stride down the mound. The reason he is releasing it lower is due to the fact he has become more efficient with his front leg. IF you notice in 2014 the leg landing does not quite cause the same catapult effect with his upper half as it does now. He is almost parallel to the ground. People use to say to "reach for the grass" Wrong, you have to create that reaction through a strong front leg.
    edit: its not arm slot, look at his back angle, it is almost horizontal to the ground in 2021 whereas in 2014 he is more vertical than he is now.

    Hey Tread Athletics. Chris Sale is similar to degrom in that his body is seemingly more elastic than most, and that allows for a stronger "whipping" and completion of the kinetic chain. But Sale got injured. So im wondering, are there any key differences between the two that may safeguard deGrom from injury? Was it just more innings that did Sale in? Thanks!

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 lety +1

      Sale definitely has that elastic component, but he doesn't get into the deep positions that DeGrom does nor does he have the fluid spiral action to his arm path. It's always tough to pinpoint the cause of an injury though because they are multifactorial.

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 lety

      Seaver did what I would consider slightly overstriding. He had a soft lead leg block and slightly linear finish as a result. The linear finish causes the back knee to shoot inwards into ball release. He's not necessarily the pitcher who I would seek to emulate from a mechanical standpoint.

    but unless he maintains his flexibility, mobility, and strength as he continues to age, it won't matter if he is "efficient."
    Efficiency is extremely important. but with an aging pitcher it is more important to train in whatever way to maintain that flexibity, that mobility, that strength, bc the second you start to lose hip mobility, or any mobility, no matter how efficient you are youre velo will slow down because the places the velo comes from are not able to take that load. and even if he keeps the mobility he needs to keep the strength he does have bc w/out it, he is susceptible to injury due to weak joints. The last thing I am thinking of, we slow down with age too so it is important he keeps that strength bc you don't throw hard from have peak mechanical efficiency due to mobility. you throw hard bc you have the strength to use that mobility to make everything fire on all cylinders.

    @madwax1360 Před 3 lety

    The baseballs were modified to produce more home runs. Starting in 2017, and again in 2019. With that change, the ball is smoother, and harder...therefore you can throw it harder with little effort. The con is you'll get less movement on your pitches. This is why pitchers are throwing the ball 100mph, and hitters are still able to knock it out of the park....it's on a string.

    • @aidanluhmann3028
      @aidanluhmann3028 Před 3 lety

      nah not really because the balls speed is recorded when it leaves the pitchers hand so it would have traveled far enough to slow down very much due to air drag

    • @madwax1360
      @madwax1360 Před 3 lety

      @@aidanluhmann3028 that's my point. Since the ball is smoother, and the stitches are lower, there is less drag on the ball, as soon as it leave the pitchers hand. MLB is on record saying they've changed the baseball yet once again for 2021...making it less prone to home runs. So this will be interesting to see how some pitchers will re-adjust. If you remember, both deGromm and Cole struggled in the beginning of 2019 with the new ball structure. They were able to make adjustments and have great seasons. Others were not so lucky (Hader and Edwin Diaz come to mind)

    I wonder is velocity is overrated? If throwing as hard as possible shreds the ligaments in your elbow and shoulder wouldn't it be better to dial it down and focus on command?
    1 pitch 1 out is preferable to a 5-pitch strikeout. 90mph is plenty of fastball but you gotta command it and your other pitches.

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před rokem

      90 mph fastballs get hit much harder than upper 90s fastballs these days. And you can definitely work on command and velo. They're not mutually exclusive

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 lety +1

      Hip shoulder separation is influenced by a lot of things - he's got great mobility through his hips and thoracic spine (a prerequisite to these types of positions), but that only gives the potential for reaching these positions. He is able to express that mobility at high speeds because of very efficient patterns + sequencing. He's mastered the dance move down the mound - moving forward while staying back, seamlessly combining a linear move with a rotational unload.
