  • After losing two games in a row, Bronstein tries to create difficulties for Botvinnik, relying on his connected passed pawns on the queenside. However, Botvinnik finds a very effective way of restricting the pawns. He provokes a weakening move, after which the pawns cannot coordinate and creates his own counter-play in the center, seizing the initiative. After that Bronstein has to fight for a draw.

A fearless battle! It is enjoyable to see how the players navigated the tactical jungle and played with a goal in mind: winning.

Siempre quise ver cómo jugaron este match estos dos grandes maestros. Mi colección de publicaciones de ajedrez arranca en 1954, cuando solo restaban recuerdos de esta contienda. Gracias por compartir, por los análisis y explicaciones

A good one. 2 connected passed pawns seem daunting on average, but the Patriarch once again showed his great strategic ability to neutralize counter play and get on with his plans. A fair draw.

It's a shame, Borenstein should have changed his black field hunter (as noted by Botvinik's analysis), maybe the outcome would have been different?! This way, a draw, it's not bad to stabilize from two defeats in a row.

At 1:20 you give Be2 for white. This is known to be inferior and probably losing; g3 is the main line and better.

Thank you for mentioning g3, indeed, it's a better move. I chose Be2 (which was played in Denker vs Botvinnik game), as it better illustrates all the dangers of this variation for White. Botvinnik, however, had experience of playing against g3 too. Anyway black gets counter chances in all variations, so Bronstein decided to avoid it.
