    16:10 - method 2 - mixing paints
    17:30 - painting process
    ⭐ Q&A LIST BELOW:
🌸 why "unintentional" in the title?
🌿 i filmed this thinking there would be a voiceover and occasional moments of 'asmr' quality shots but ended up just having no music for the process entirely. therefore, i'm hesitant to say that it's asmr since a lot of the shots are pretty noisy for it to be considered a true asmr (tons of background noise). while some people get worked up over the fact that "unintentional" is in title, there are sound sensitive viewers who should know this is not a true / clean asmr. that being said, if you have a better word to use other than 'unintentional', then let me know.
🌸 Why did use gloves during the first method but not the second?
🌿 the two methods shown were very different with the second method being more of the traditional method of mixing these specific pigments. i wanted to show the safety measures that are associated with each method that I've seen. If you end up making paints with different pigments by using the first method, you should definitely be wearing a respirator and gloves at the minimum. Method 2 shows how to mix the paints only specifically if you are mixing paints using natural mineral pigments ( or iwaenogu).
Here is more info of Nihonga painting methods: www.yamatane-museum.jp/englis...
🌸 Why did sift the pigments when you already ground them?
🌿 Even though I ground the pigments, they still clump together a little since they still retain a bit of moisture so I used a small sifter to break up those clumps.
🌸 Which method do you prefer out of the two?
🌿 The two methods each have their own pros and cons. The first method is great because the paints act more like watercolors where they can be rewet and used in the future. However there are a lot of cons. The first method requires many more supplies that aren’t supplies that one would just have laying around the house. This attributes to this method being less accessible to many who would want to go through with this method. It also requires a lot more time than the second method and the paints are less permanent since gum arabic is less archival than the Nikawa glue used in the second method. The second method is simpler to follow and is permanent (it is very archival), but the paints are more of a one-time use. I prefer the first method. Even though it takes more supplies and time, I enjoy being able to use the paints in the future with no additional prep or time constraint.
🌸 More info on the pigments?
🌿 these pigments are an exclusive collaboration between Choosing Keeping and a lovely pigment store called Saiun-do in Japan. I've talked about these pigments more extensively in my other recent videos as well.
    🌸 Why add honey?
🌿 this step is optional but i prefer to add it since it gives the paints a nice texture. it will also preserve moisture.

Im a little late but i must say this. My cat doesn’t like watching TV or videos or anything of the sort. Not only did she lay down with me, she was so invested in the video. I think she liked the colours and the mulling process. She stuck her paw out and touched my screen when she saw colours she liked like the dark pink, teal, and dark green. She fell asleep at the end!

      I’ll paste a post from insomniac-arrest:
people talk all the time about "primal instincts" and it's usually about violence or sexual temptations or something, but your humanity comes with a lot of different stuff that we do without really thinking about, that we do without being told to or prompted to your average human comes pre-installed with instincts to:
      Befriend
      Tell story
      Make Thing
      Investigate
      Share knowledge
      Laugh
      Sing
      Dance
      Empathize with
      Create
we are chalk full of survival instincts that revolve around connecting to others (dog-shaped others, robot-shaped, sometimes even plant-shaped) and making things with our hands
your primal instincts are not bathed in blood- they are layered in people telling stories to each other around a fire over and over and putting devices together through trial and error over and over and reaching for someone and something every moment of the way
This video clicks with “Make Thing”, “Create”, “Share Knowledge” and “Befriend”, considering the fact that we’re looking how someone else creates.
People have been finding stuff and making paint with it before agriculture was a thing.

    hello friends -
this video is not meant to be instructional in any way, i am still learning and experimenting with this form of art that takes a lifetime to master and in this video, i am sharing my experience! this video was shot over a span of two weeks so i hope you enjoy seeing the highlights of the paintmaking process! there is vital information in the description box - please leave any more questions you have in the comments and i will add your question to the Q&A list!
also, as you can tell by the title, this video had an unintentional ASMR quality to it. i was originally planning on doing a voiceover and explaining each step but ended up not wanting to cover up the sounds of the process. that being said, you may hear some extraneous noises like conversations in the background, a fan, lawn mowers in the distance, etc. please turn on your music and enjoy the video!
