Phish - Riverport "Bathtub Gin": Greatest Jam Ever?

  • 7/29/98 Riverport Amphitheater, Maryland Heights, MO. This is widely considering some of the band's best playing. Clocking in at 24 minutes, this jam is so phenomenal, in fact, that people have suggested that they rehearsed this exact version, obviously differing from the improve playing that they are known for. Although there is another version of this song on youtube, that one is cut short; you can hear the whole piece here, from beginning to end.

I was there with all our friends that night......very sobering night yet one we all celebrated as our friend Mark who was the biggest Phish fan of all died early the morning of this show when he had a seizure and crashed along 270.... He was a gem, turned so many of folks onto Phish.....all these years later listening I just smile thinking of his energy and how that is such a reflection of their music :)

I was there. About 9 minutes in, everyone knew that something special was happening. At 19 minutes in, I remember the lawn breaking into a collective smile; people shaking their heads in disbelief. And when the bathtub riff circled back around at the end, all I could do was laugh and look at the people around me...and they were all doing the same.

i saw them when i was in teh Army (dumb idea) in 1997 in Austin. tripped a bit, nothing special and wasn't much of a fan at the time. after the show i noticed police lights in teh parking lot getting closer. it turns out they were emptying the parking lot.
out of all the concerts they choose a Phish concert to kick people onto the streets. i happened to drive that night. i try to never drive. my job in the Army was an APC driver so i was used to it.
going back to Ft Hood sucked so bad. it was before 9/11 so we drove onto base without a problem, no checkpoint. then we had to find ways to entertain ourselves lol.
still not a huge Phish fan except for the jams. not a fan of their silly lyrics.

Wow! Great minds think alike. I came across this bathtub gin in 98 and burned it on a cdr. I can't keep up with every show phish plays so I guess I just got lucky. I still keep it in my car to either jam out to or to share with people who wanna know why this band is such a big deal. Didn't realize it was the same version when I clicked, but recognized it immediately. I know this thing note for note backwards and forwards. Surprised it's still considered one of, if not the best, but glad to see it posted here. Truly an epic jam!!

I remember too because I met Mike while he was out on the golf cart, there were a bunch of us talking to him and just as he was leaving I patted him on the back and told him to have a great show. And then they bust out with THIS - first song, first set. I was BLOWN AWAY by it then and am so happy to have found this and to have learned of its legendary status among phans.

lol @ opening a show with this. absurd. the way they slowly transcend in to the funk starting at 12:00 - fish switching the beat at 14:07, hitting the money groove together at 15:30 ... immaculate. 3 1/2 minutes of the jam constantly evolving and taking shape. then once they super lock it in at 16:05 trey goes to shredtown. phish is good.

There is no “best” with Phish. Not as long as they progress...which they always do. I’ve heard remarkable phish 1.0 and went to a lot of shows back then. They have changed their style up a few times since. Saw them a few times in 3.0 and what they do, in my opinion, is take stuff from one era to another. It’s a melting pot of styles. You don’t think phish forgot the eras. Every best phish show is the last one they played. I feel fortunate to have been a 90’s kid that was introduced to phish in middle school. I’ll never talk shit about a band that’s given me so much. Every last show is the best bc it means they’re still together and performing. Peace

The jam section around 14 minutes reminds me a lot of the incredible AC DC Bag from 8/9/98. God I wish I could go back in time and revisit those shows I went to.

For the record, I don't really like the song. When they start playing it, I usually head for the Bathroom. I called it "Bathroom Gin". Still do. But I was at this show. It was the show opener, so I wasn't about to head for the beer line or bathroom. So I waited it out. Oh my. Waited it out. Then I'm dancing. Then I'm smiling. Then I'm catching my breath. Then I'm looking around. Im dancing harder. I'm feeling the energy. It keeps building and building and changing, and the next thing you know, I'm dancing like a banshee, saying "holy shit!" to myself and grinning from ear to ear. May not be the best song or even the best version of a song that I don't care for. But during the first 20 minutes on the lawn that evening in Maryland Heights, it truly WAS magic people. And very aesthetically pleasing to the ears, that rivals anything from Fall 97'.

Great comment. Love it! I caught this one too, and I forget sometimes that this was the SHOW OPENER. This is a fantastic Gin. I feel the same way about the Magnaball Caspian. It's the only version of Fuckerpants that I'll refer to by its "given name."

Phish has been recognized by their devoted Phans who have helped them generate $120 million over the last phour years. The mainstream doesn't need to acknowledge them. We are better off with them having the liberty to do just what they do unfettered by corporate record labels.
